Conclusion

The Sony DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM is an excellent standard zoom lens for Sony A-Mount owners and is particularly well-matched in terms of size and build-quality to the A77 body that we tested it with. Perhaps the only fly in the ointment is an apparent lack of sharpness at F2.8 that runs throughout the zoom range - you really need to stop down to F4 to achieve an acceptable level of sharpness. Despite this flaw, we can still highly recommend the Sony DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM as a great walk-around lens for A65 and A77 owners in particular.
