Delkin Devices have announced a new line of SD memory cards that feature a specialised casing and design that make them waterproof, dustproof, extreme temperature resistant, and virtually unbreakable. Delkin BLACK SD cards are built using a proprietary injection molding process that differs from the traditional surface mounted components and welded case design that most cards utilise. This process uses an innovative material to give the cards advantages that are far superior in terms of reliability and ruggedness when compared to traditional memory cards, the company says. Read and write speeds are proven at 99MB/s and 80MB/s respectively, and the cards are rated for UHS-I Speed Class 3, meaning they are guaranteed to perform at a minimum sequential write speed of 30MB/s - a rating that is required for many 4K applications. The added ruggedness of Delkin BLACK has allowed Delkin to offer a unique built-in insurance policy for the cards, called their "48 Hour, No-Questions-Asked Replacement Guarantee". Users are asked to register their Delkin BLACK card using the card's unique serial number to activate the policy, which enables traceability and gives each owner the added security against loss, theft, and damage. Delkin BLACK cards are available in capacities of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB and sold exclusively through authoised camera stores in the US and in Europe.

Film manufacturer Ferrania is in the process of building a new factory in northern Italy. Two years ago, the company ceased production of all photographic film due to plummeting demand. Now they have embarked on a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the resumption of operations. "We have created an ambitious new factory design that will allow us to produce enough film, at a reasonable price, to meet worldwide demand," the company says. "We have already rescued tons of equipment (quite literally) from the old Ferrania buildings - but we need more and we are out of time. The buildings will be destroyed at the end of this year." The campaign has already surpassed its target but you can still pledge to back the project and receive various rewards - rolls of 35mm, 120 format, Super 8 and 16mm motion picture film - in exchange.

Blackmagic Design has released an update to its Blackmagic Camera utility, bringing in-camera formatting to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (pictured). The new disk formatting feature allows customers to format SSDs and SD cards in-camera so they don’t need to use a computer to prepare disks for recording. This new disk formatting feature is unique because unlike computers that format disks for general storage use, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and Pocket Cinema Camera can format disks optimised for high-performance video use. When formatting the camera confirms the brand of disk and other disks parameters and then formats for highest speed video data recording and playback for that specific type of disk, the company says. You can download the firmware upgrade from the website below.

Intelligent Imaging Solutions have released its piccure+ software, billed as "a revolution in computational photography." Designed to improve the quality of photos taken with both high-quality and consumer-grade lenses, piccure+ can apparently "determine the optical aberrations from the image itself," the company says. “The advances in computational photography will have a dramatic impact on image formation in general. Image formation will no longer be just an optical process, instead it will be a combination of both optical and computational processes. The boundaries between software and hardware will become blurred,” says Prof. Dr. Hanns Ruder, CEO of IIS. “This development will allow cheaper, lighter, and smaller optical systems. We made the first radical step in this direction with piccure+." The software is now available as a standalone application with powerful batch processing and raw image file support, priced at €109.

Other highlights include time-lapse photography, Bluetooth, USB and Wi-Fi connectivity and waterproofing (to 1m underwater, out of the box).
