So does the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS live up to its billing as a super zoom
for all the family? OK, so it eats up batteries in a particularly
greedy fashion and images can be noisy if you stray above
ISO 400, but the build, the ease
of use, the range of family-orientated features and that
£299 price point – bound to drop to £250 with a little hunting
around – should ensure it wins fans among those who want
that extra zoom range, but don't need all the bells and whistles
of an enthusiast-targeted super zoom along with it. There are
a few niggles – namely the inability to adjust the zoom when
in video mode, and that
flimsy control dial that can slip between settings – but,
even when you factor in the power hungriness, these aren't
quite enough to have you anywhere close to dismissing the
Canon PowerShot SX100 IS entirely. In fact overall the SX100 IS adds
up to one of the more competent performers out there in this
price bracket, boasting just the sort of shot-to-shot reliability
you want when it's potentially being passed around everyone
from little Agnes to Grandma. I was expecting a performance
that was OK and was pleasantly surprised when the Canon PowerShot
SX100 IS exceeded it. So that's another recommendation from
the PhotographyBLOG crew for those wanting an all-singing,
all-dancing big zoom compact, but without too many distracting
specifications or a hefty price tag in tow.
