Olympus µ[mju:] 400 Digital
(Also known as the Olympus Stylus 400 Digital)
Review Date: 6th October 2003
Conclusion

(out of 5 stars)
The µ[mju:] 400 Digital is easy-to-use, looks stunning
and delivers great images. So why haven't I awarded it more
than 4 stars out of 5? Well, the µ[mju:] 400 Digital
loses a whole mark because it doesn't offer enough photographic
control. You can't choose the aperture or shutter speed, you
can't manually set the ISO speed and you can't select how
much sharpening or saturation you want to apply to your images.
Instead the camera chooses the most appropriate settings for
you.
This may be ideal for many people, who just want to turn
the camera on, press the shutter button and get a decent picture.
The µ[mju:] 400 Digital certainly fulfills this requirement.
I'd like a bit more creative control over my photographs,
however, and this is the main area where the µ[mju:]
400 Digital doesn't meet my needs. Despite saying that, part
of me still really likes the µ[mju:] 400 Digital, and
I think it would be perfect as a small, portable, hard-wearing
second camera that you could carry round with you at all times.
Now, if only Olympus would release an updated version of
the µ[mju:] 400 Digital camera that allowed you to take
control when you wanted to, but still retained the ease-of-use,
great looks and punchy images that the current model already
has? Are you listening Olympus?!
