The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS5 is a new entry-level 14 megapixel compact camera. The LS5 features a 5x optical zoom with a 26mm wide-angle setting, fast F2.8 brightness and Optical Image Stabilizer. Panasonic UK Press Release

Introducing the Smart and Easy 14.1-Megapixel Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LS5

Featuring O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) and iA (Intelligent Auto) mode

Taking pictures has never been so simple as Panasonic introduces the new 14.1-megapixel LUMIX DMC-LS5 featuring a high quality 26mm wide angle lens with 5x optical zoom (35mm camera equiv. 26-130mm) plus Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S) and Intelligent Auto mode.

Offering superb image quality the 14.1-megapixel LS5 benefits from a high quality 26mm wide angle LUMIX DC VARIO lens with F2.8 brightness, helping to capture clear images even in dimly lit situations.

The most frequent cause of mis-shot is handshake, and that is why O.I.S. is central to all LUMIX cameras. The O.I.S. is renowned for its high correction performance against blur caused by a hand-shake and compensates effectively without deterioration of image quality.

In addition to O.I.S, the popular and powerful shooting assist mode iA (Intelligent Auto) also helps users to utilise other convenient features – Intelligent Scene Selector automatically selects whichever of 5 Scene Modes—Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, Night Scenery—that best suits the shooting situation. Human faces are captured in focus with appropriate exposure and with Face Detection the camera can also correct unwanted red-eye digitally .

The new LS5 can also record stunning HD movie in 1280 x 720p at a smooth 30 fps and thanks to bundled software, PHOTOfunSTUDIO, video and photo memories can easily be shared via Facebook or YouTube.

Running on AA batteries, the DMC-LS5 offers any entry-level user comfort and satisfaction a step above. Pursuing ultimate ease of operation, functions are simplified but the LS5 still performs to the high standards expected from a LUMIX compact camera.

  6. This Lumix DMC-LS5 has serious problems that need to be corrected. The camera I am reviewing has v 1.0 firmware.

Focusing is unreliable, including very out of focus pictures of the side of a building taken with the camera resting on a rail, using focus lock and the spot focus setting.

The left 20 percent of the image in horizontal is out of focus because the lens is out of alignment at wide to mid focal lengths at about 10 to 20 feet.

The 5x zoom is less sharp than the 4x zoom, so you are better off cropping. This makes the digital zoom worthless, since it is enlarging the 5x zoom image.

When all goes well, the 14 mp images are sharp. But the lower mp images are not so sharp, and the 0.3 mp images are horribly over compressed.

There are no menu settings to adjust sharpness level, noise reduction, compression or saturation. Also missing is a fluorescent WB setting.

The zoom seems designed with 10 positions, but it is so fast it tends to skip between 5 positions. You have to tap very fast and lightly to use it.

Macro seems to only be available in IA mode.

Movies look good in HD mode, but on my camera the sound doesn't work.

There is no menu setting for battery type, but battery life with nimh batteries appears normal. Alkaline may not work well without a setting.

There is no apparent over-sharpening in 14 mp. Noise reduction gets aggressive at 400 iso, but high iso images look surprisingly good.

Otherwise, it looks like it could be a good camera, if Panasonic fixes these problems. This camera should not have been released to market.

  8. Hey, want comments from a professional journalist? Next time, try paying one. Or better yet, go out an buy the camera and write your own reviews. But do not go around insulting people without cause.

Thank you. Have a nice day.

  15. Nice camera. worth for the price. all seems perfect exept a small area. The speed of the camera is sligtly slow compared to others. But not a big problem compared to the advantages.

KG at 06:34am on Thursday, August 09, 2012

  16. This camera is a piece of junk. Cheap material, poor picture quality and colors. Focus problems, works on AA batteries. Don't buy it..

samy at 09:12pm on Wednesday, October 16, 2013

  17. I am not too happy with this camera. I use it for 2 years and now it is broken. Bring it to service shop they said this camera maybe has an internal problem. There are another 3 camera (same type) in the shop.

Not to good in managing contrast. Some leak (purple color) sometimes occured in picture. I expect more than this. My old pocket camera (at same price) is better. Night photograph is just enough only (no special thing).
