Documentary photographer Juliana Edwards (pictured) has published a powerful photographic record of the east London site that will house the 2012 Olympics. She set out to document the human traces before the future Olympic site was vacated in preparation for construction work to begin. Many of the locations photographed have since been razed to the ground, making the book an important historical record. Juliana Edwards says: “I had a sense of elation when London won the 2012 Olympics and immediately wanted to capture the area as it was. I have an intimate connection with the Olympic site, having lived in housing in Temple Mills Lane and Clays Lane which has now been demolished to make way for the Olympic Village. People’s idea of permanence is usually based on the premise that bricks, mortar and concrete will be there forever, but here in this part of east London, all of a sudden they are not.” Copies of ‘2012: The Place That Was’ can be ordered from Amazon UK for £30.

Christopher Walker Art has announced a major solo exhibition for new artist Nicky Taylor at The Strand Gallery, London from June 11th-17th. “The title [The Return to Beauty] is close to the Artist’s heart, as it represents a rebellion against what he sees as the monopoly of ‘fashionable,’ ‘shock photography,’’ which limits its subject matter to the grotesque and the shocking, the ugly, or the perverted,” the organisers say. “The viewer of Nicky Taylor’s work is lifted out of the urban environment to confront the awesome majesty of Nature. Explore the Salkantay trail to Savage Mountain in South America, rising to 20,000 feet above sea level, or plunge down into the depths of the ocean to experience the depths, and the almost alien like creatures that it supports.” The Strand Gallery is located at 32 John Adam Street,London WC2N 6BP. The exhibition is accompanied by the release of an 11” x 8.5” coffee table book of the same title, featuring 75 full colour photographs..

In June 2012, Aperture will release a newly expanded and updated reissue of Lynne Cohen’s first monograph, Occupied Territory. “In the nearly twenty years of work contained in the book, Cohen turns her view camera toward classrooms, science laboratories, testing facilities, waiting rooms, and other interior spaces where function triumphs over aesthetics,” the publisher says. “In cool, functional offices, futuristic reception areas, lifeless party rooms, escapist motel rooms, and haunting killing chambers, Cohen surveys a society of surface, contradiction, and social engineering.” The 144-page hardback includes 102 duotone images and sells for $60/£40.
