Canon EOS 10D...who are unsure whether their shiny new camera is suffering from the now legendary front/back focus issue, Bob Atkins has posted a quick guide to checking the focus. I’l be testing my camera later today - fingers crossed that it’s OK…

“There are many reports of focus problems with the EOS 10D. There are also many examples where the reported focus errors turned out to be user errors rather than camera errors. For a lot of users the 10D seems to be their first serious camera, their first SLR and their first exposure to the Canon AF system, so operator error isn’t unexpected. However the possibility does exist, and there certainly does seem to be some evidence to support the hypothesis, that some EOS 10D bodies have a problem which manifests itself as focusing in front of the intended subject. It’s also possible that in some cases the 10D has no worse errors than those in film bodies (Canon, Nikon or other), but the ability to do “free” tests in digital reveal those errors! It’s also possible that after being told that there is the possibility of the 10D focusing in front of the desired focus point, some users will find just that, whether or not an objective test shows it to be the case!”

In theory, a contest which involves converting a Canon EOS 10D RAW file doesn’t sound particularly interesting, but in practice it does show the different effects that can be achieved using RAW conversion software and Photoshop. Take a look at the entires so far from the likes of Thomas Knoll (the creator of Photoshop!); which one do you prefer?

Canon EOS 10DThis week’s Sunday Photographer article sees Kent Phelan take a look at the plus and minus (yes, minus!) points of the current flavour of the month, the Canon EOS 10D digital SLR.

“Good morning! This week I’ve asked my friend Kent Phelan, a longtime photo junkie and all-around good guy, to write down some of his comments about his new 10D. The 10D, as everybody in the photography Universe knows by now, is the present “state of the affordable art” ? a camera that simultaneously pushes previous performance and price limits. How many moments it will remain the camera of the moment is anybody’s guess….”

Canon EOS 10DMichael Reichmann from Luminous Landscape.com has at last reviewed the Canon EOS 10D.

“In the end the 10D will be bought by a broad range of purchasers. Entry level digital buyers will find that it meets their needs and gives them lots of room to grow and learn. Advanced amateurs and pros will find it to be a tool that effectively delivers high quality images, and does so at an attractive price. Many owners of 1D and 1Ds models will buy one as a back up body. In fact, a few weeks after returning my test camera to Canon I bought a 10D for myself as backup to my 1Ds. The D60, which had previously served that purpose, was sold to a friend as backup for his 1Ds. So to answer the question of those that will ask ? is it worth upgrading from the D60 to the 10D?, my answer is ? I did. “

Canon EOS 10DCNET have reviewed the Canon EOS 10D DSLR, giving it 8.9 out of 10 and their Editor’s Choice award.

“If you’re looking for a first digital SLR, they don’t get much more appealing than the 6.3-megapixel Canon EOS 10D. Replacing the popular D60, the 10D provides improved image quality and a slightly more streamlined design without sacrificing the broad accessory and lens compatibility of the EOS line. Though professionals will still sigh longingly for the finer controls and the better performance and image quality of the far more expensive EOS 1Ds, the 10D makes a great choice for those seeking the flexibility and quality of an SLR without the sticker shock.”

Another day, another positive review of Capture One DSLR, which I think is going to be released and available for purchase today. Luminous Landscape is the latest website to give this new RAW convertor program a glowing review:

“OK. Let’s start with my conclusions first. Capture One is as close to magic as I’ve yet seen in imaging software. Since I started using DSLR in November of 2002 I regarded it as an almost indispensable tool for working with Canon 1D or 1Ds files, and now C1-LE plays the same roll for use with my Canon 10D. I wish I could scientifically quantify what I’m seeing ? but I can’t. I do know though that this software is able to produce tonalities from my cameras that are a significant step above those from Canon’s own software, and better than I can get from Photoshop alone.”

Following on from Outback Photo’s recent review, DP Review have also taken a look at Capture One DSLR (Limited Edition), a soon-to-be released RAW file converter from Phase One. DPReview only have positive things to say:

“It’s fair to say that Capture One DSLR Limited Edition delivers the best combination of workflow management and high quality RAW conversion. Final image output is sharper, has a better tonal balance, more detail and less artifacts than the standard manufacturer’s RAW conversion application. Real time adjustment of exposure, white balance, sharpening, levels and curves is superb. Capture One DSLR Limited Edition will be priced at US$99 (online purchase) which I think is a bargain if you take your Digital SLR photography seriously (and regularly shoot RAW).”

Outback Photo have reviewed Capture One DSLR (Limited Edition), a RAW file converter from Phase One that competes with the likes of third-partly applications Adobe Raw and BreezeBrowser. Capture One DSLR (Limited Edition) is a $99 cut-down version of the $500 full program, with support for the Canon D30/D60/10D and the Nikon D100.

“We find this is the best solution for the Canon 10D right now on the market (keep in mind that Adobe’s Camera Raw has no official support for the 10D yet).”

I’m still learning to use Canon’s File Viewer Utility, which according to popular opinion is not very good, but as I’ve already paid for it, I’ll give it a fair crack of the whip…

I found a few minutes this evening to experiment with an area of photography that I have virtually no experience and, until recently at least, no interest in. Macro photography, and in particular macro photography of flowers, has never sparked my imagination. I mean, if you’ve seen one photo of a flower, then you’ve seen them all, right?

Err, wrong actually. Now that I can actually see and review what I’ve just taken a photo of, I’m willing to try out new things, including, would you believe it, macro photography. So here’s a few shots of flowers taken with the 10D and the macro function on my Tamron zoom lens (which isn’t strictly speaking a macro lens at all).

*Note 1: Macro number 3 is actually a 500x333 pixel crop from Macro 2.
*Note 2: I have adjusted the images slightly in Photoshop - levels, contrast, USM, the usual things…
*Note 3: The 10D can save an image as both a RAW file and a JPEG file at the same time. All of these images are the small JPEGs that the camera created.
*Note 4: If anyone’s interested in seeing a full-size, unedited RAW file, then let me know, and I’ll maybe email something to you.

I had about an hour yesterday afternoon to venture out into the Spring sunshine (which has now disappeared) and try out the 10D for the very first time.

Unlike a lot of new 10D owners, I didn’t take any shots of rulers to try and prove if my camera has focusing issues, and there are definitely no pictures of cats…

At this very early stage I’m also completely unsure of the conversion process from the camera to print and the web. These images were shot in Raw mode, converted to 16-bit tiffs using Canon’s File Viewer Utility, tweaked in Photoshop (levels, contrast, USM), then saved as web-ready jpegs in Macromedia Fireworks. This is almost certainly not the best way to do things; further reading is required.

Bob Atkins has posted a brief, informative and even humorous guide to the Canon EOS 10D, which is principally aimed at people who are upgrading from point and shoot digital cameras.

“I’ve seen reports that 10D images aren’t as sharp as they might be, or the saturation is low, or the contrast is wrong. Opinions differ and that’s why the 10D let’s you adjust all these settings (manual, p.56). However you have to make these adjustments BEFORE the shot is taken if you are shooting JPEG files. If you shoot RAW files you can make these adjustments later (Software manual page W.27 or M.25) when you transfer the files to your PC. You can’t print RAW files, they have to be converted first, so you need a PC for this. If you don’t have a PC then (a) You bought the wrong camera and (b) How are you reading this?”

Fred Miranda has released a new Photoshop sharpening action for the Canon EOS 10D, called “10D CSPro”.

“The 10D CSpro action is a new sharpening technology specific designed to accommodate the Canon 10D SLR non-linear files. It rapidly performs approximately 35 steps and offers many intensity levels.
Although both the D60 and 10D offer similar file size, the 10D CSpro was redesigned from scratch in order to accommodate the improved noise levels and CMOS quality improvements of the 10D. This new action provides everything from haloless sharpening, edgesharpening, luminance sharpening, mode sharpening, and more with just the press of a button.”

Canon EOS 10DGuy Lerner of “GO inside” magazine has enthusiastically reviewed the Canon EOS 10D DSLR.

“Quite simply, there is no camera in this class and in this price range that competes with the 10D on features, image quality, build, robustness and speed. Not without its shortcomings, the 10D will meet and exceed the needs of most photographers without breaking the bank, and coupled with the rich selection of Canon and third-party lenses ? from cheap consumer glass to expensive professional-grade optics ? it represents the best value in a digital SLR camera available today, and for many months to come. “
