The 36-megapixel FX imager of the new Nikon D810 has achieved a DxOMark Sensor Score of 97, which is higher than those of its predecessors, the Nikon D800 (95) and D800E (96); prompting DxO Labs to declare it the"new leader" in their database. "It’s an outstanding score with excellent colourr depth and an extremely wide dynamic range at base ISO for the most subtle tonal gradations in highlights and shadows," DxO Labs said in a statement. "The low-light score of 2853 ISO is also excellent however it’s somewhat behind the best in that category."

Canon broadcast lenses were the most widely used broadcast lenses covering the matches of the recent World Cup in Brazil, the company said in a statement. Furthermore, the professional photographers tasked with capturing the events utilised Canon DSLR cameras and lenses more than any other brand. Throughout the tournament, approximately 70 percent of imaging professionals chose Canon DSLRs and lenses to capture and share the memorable moments of the matches, the company claims. At each of the 12 stadiums that hosted football matches in Brazil, Canon Professional Service had teams of technical and professional representatives providing imaging professionals with access to product support, equipment maintenance, and product loans.

Ricoh has posted a firmware update for the Pentax K-3 digital SLR camera. According to the company, version 1.10 incorporates the following enhancements:

  • Added Diffraction Correction on Lens Correction.
  • Shortened processing time for Digital Filter and Color Fringe Correction.
  • Improved stability for AWB (Auto white balance) performance.
  • Changed to ISO Bracketing when using Exposure Bracketing on TAv mode
  • Improved stability for general performance.

The Nikon D810 is a new DSLR that "offers the highest image quality in Nikon's history". According to Nikon, the D810 has a brand new 36.3 megapixel sensor with no optical low pass filter that delivers image quality that rivals medium format cameras. In addition, the Nikon D810 has an ISO range of 32-51200, 1080/60p video recording, Expeed 4 image processing engine, 51-point auto-focus system, 5fps burst shooting at full resolution, and an improved LCD monitor (3.2-inch with 1299K dots).

The Nikon D810 will replace both the D800 and D800E models, and will cost £2,699 / 3299Euros / $3,299.95, available from the 17th July.

Canon has issued an update to its product advisory concerning an LCD illumination issue affecting its EOS 5D Mark III digital SLR camera. The company describes the problem as follows: if the LCD panel illuminates, the displayed exposure value may change. The year 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of Canon's EOS-1 series. The company's first professional EOS single-lens reflect camera, the Canon EOS-1, was introduced in 1989 - two years after the launch of the EOS system itself. Created to meet the advanced demands of professional photographers, the EOS-1 boasted cutting-edge technologies, class-leading levels of performance, new levels of ergonomics, high durability and reliability, and marked the inaugural model of Canon’s EOS-1 series. Subsequent milestones included the launch of the EOS-1N in 1994, the release of the EOS-1N RS with its fixed pellicle mirror, 6ms shutter lag and 10fps burst mode in 1995, the introduction of the EOS-1V in 2000, the release of the digital EOS-1D in 2001, and the launch of the full-frame EOS-1Ds in 2002. Canon U.S.A. has kicked off its Canon In Action Tour, an educational roadshow ideal for advanced amateur SLR users and filmmaking enthusiasts. The tour includes live-learning seminars and workshops in several major US cities between now and 23 November 2014. Tour attendees will have the opportunity to take part in an in-depth Imaging Essentials Saturday seminar, and/or intensive Sunday training workshops for a nominal fee. The EOS 70D was named Best Advanced DSLR, the title 'Best Expert Compact Camera' went to the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x (pictured) was dubbed 2014's Best Pro DSLR Lens, while Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology won the Best Imaging Innovation category.
