“With a quality lens attached to it, the EOS-40D can produce spectacular results. The camera produces very smooth-looking photos, which some may consider soft—and if so, you can play around with the Picture Styles to find a sharpness setting you like. Colors were spot-on—no complaints there. As for noise, there wasn’t much, and you had to get the ISO pretty high to see any of it. Purple fringing is going to depend a lot on your choice of lens. It did pop up here and there, but it was fairly minor in most cases. My only photo quality complaint is that the the 40D has the tendency to underexpose.”

DCViews have reviewed the Panasonic DMC-FZ18 digital camera, which features a 18x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 28-504mm on a 35mm film camera.

“Image quality is excellent with virtually no distortion at any focal length. Even at wide angle, parallels were perfectly straight in all our test shots. Chromatic aberration or purple fringing is practically non-existent and there is no sign of vignetting in the extreme corners of the image. Colours are natural without being overly saturated and should you prefer more punch, this is easily set in the camera menu by dialling in more saturation, sharpness or contrast.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the Canon EOS 40D digital SLR camera, which offers a 10.1 megapixel sensor, 6.5 fps continuous shooting and 3 inch LCD screen.

“As is typical of this particular line of Canon digital SLR cameras, images from the Canon 40D are excellent. High ISO images printed at 13x19 inches are usable from ISO 100 to 800, with little noticeable noise, and little evidence of noise suppression. You can see a more gradual degradation as you move up the ladder when viewing onscreen at 100 percent, but it’s hardly noticeable when printed. Impressive.”

Steves Digicams have reviewed the 8.1 megapixel Casio EX-S880 camera, which features enhanced movie functionality and a YouTube Best Shot scene mode.

“I was a bit disappointed with the S880’s image quality results using 8m Fine mode. While images looked awesome on the camera’s LCD, further inspection on a PC later showed that images are well exposed and colors are richly saturated, however there’s a lot of edge softness present. This wasn’t just on a few of our samples, but ever one of about 190 pictures. Luckily the S880 does offer adjustments for sharpness, contrast and saturation, which will help with this issue. Noise levels were typical for a consumer model, becoming more noticeable as you increase the sensitivity.”

The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2 compact camera has 4GB of internal memory and can store up to 1,000 8 megapixel images. The 2.7 inch touch-panel LCD screen replaces small buttons with on-screen icons and a user-friendly interface. You can touch the screen to select the subject you want to focus on (shooting mode) and where you want to zoom in (playback mode). The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2 digital camera will ship in December for about $350.

Packard Bell will integrate Kodak Gallery into all notebook and desktop computers sold in Western Europe. The partnership will provide Packard Bell computer owners with one click access to Kodak Gallery’s online photo service right from their Start Up screen. “Our partnership with Packard Bell will allow consumers to access their images quickly and easily from log-on – enabling them not only to share but to tell their personal stories with a variety of Kodak products,” said Jonathan Wisler, Director, Kodak EasyShare Gallery, Europe, Africa & Middle East Region.

The Parrot DF7700 is the first digital photo frame that you can send pictures to from your mobile phone via MMS. A SIM card with a dedicated call number is built directly into the DF7700 photo frame. The 7 inch, leather-bound Parrot DF7700 frame also features a USB connection and an SD card slot, and can store over 500 images in its internal memory. The Parrot DF7700 will first be available exclusively in France in Bouygues Telecom shops for 189 Euros, beginning in December 2007. It will be available in other countries in 2008.

The Nikon Solutions Expo, Nikon’s professional photography show, is back for a third year at London’s Olympia on 27 - 28th November. The show demonstrates all aspects of photography to the professional photographer, as well as Nikon’s complete photographic range, including the recently announced D3 and D300 DSLRs. New this year is ‘Expo on the Road’, a series of road shows in Manchester and Bristol.

PCMag have reviewed the Canon PowerShot SD750 digital camera (also known as the IXUS 75) which has a metallic finish, 3x zoom lens and 3 inch LCD screen.

“The Canon PowerShot SD750 is very similar to our current Editors’ Choice compact camera, the SD1000—inside and out. The two cameras feature 7-megapixel resolution and 3X optical zoom lenses, and they sport almost identical “box and circle” chassis designs. Nevertheless, the SD1000 has the edge with slightly better image quality and the addition of an optical viewfinder.”

“It uses a conventional CCD sensor rather than Fujifilm’s more sophisticated SuperCCD system, and it is quite a small sensor too, just 1/2.35-inches, barely larger than the sensor in most pocket compacts. As a result, it lacks the outstanding high-ISO performance and superb dynamic range of some of Fuji’s other models. Nonetheless, the exposure system is very good and makes the most of what it’s got to work with, and colour rendition is superb.”
