I used a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens most extensively during testing but also noticed the problem with a Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens when shooting soccer under the same conditions. If you must have higher hit rates in these conditions, you should probably keep a Canon EOS 1D Mark II N in your kit until Canon works out this issue.”

“The Canon PowerShot S5 IS feels good in the hand, whether shooting with the EVF or using the LCD viewfinder. For long-reach photography, we strongly recommend using the EVF and a two-handed grip to ensure stability, even with Optical Image Stabilization activated. We were able to achieve acceptably sharp images at full telephoto just over three full stops below the reciprocal focal length when shooting in this style—1/50 second on a 435mm lens.”

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the Olympus E-510 DSLR camera, which features a built-in image stabiliser in the camera body. The E510 also has a new image processing engine that offers excellent noise performance and 3fps with a seven image RAW buffer in burst mode.

“Olympus made a concerted effort to keep its costs down on the EVOLT E-510. It nixed the folding LCD that was on the E-330 citing cost as the reason. The manufacturer claimed that its audience wouldn’t pay for a camera that cost more than a thousand dollars. Thus, the Olympus E-510’s retail price hovers at $999 for the two-lens kit. The body alone sells for $799 and the single lens kit sells for $899.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L11 digital camera, which offers 6 megapixels, 2.4 inch LCD screen, 3x zoom lens (37.5-112.5mm), maximum ISO of 800 and a choice of 16 Scene modes.

“The virtue of this well-balanced compact camera is its simplicity. You could hand this to anyone and they’d be able to take pictures, video or record a voice memo. They’d know just how to hold it and which button to press to get a picture. Slide the Mode switch and they could take movies. And show them the Scene mode for a Voice Memo and they’d be able to record their thoughts, too. As a bonus, it offers several key Nikon technologies, including Face-Priority Auto Focus, that are really quite useful. It’s a nice little package, a real camera, at a very affordable price.”

“Comparing images shot with the SD14 to the numerous 10-megapixel DSLRs that I’ve tested over the past year or so, the overall level of detail is clearly higher, although not by much. However it is in colour reproduction and dynamic range that the SD14 really shines. Converting the lossless 12-bit RAW images to 16-bit TIFF image files produces results that I would compare favourably to high quality colour transparency film, with a dynamic range of around eight stops, which is significantly higher than most other DSLRs.”

The new Samsung NV20, Samsung NV15 and Samsung NV8 digital cameras offer 12, 10 and 8 megapixels respectively. “Ergonomics are great. The P5000 is well designed, offering a nice comfortable feel in your hands, thanks in part to the large handgrip. The camera controls are well placed and functional, and I especially liked the new command dial. This dial is much like one you would find on a dSLR, and is used to adjust exposure values like aperture and shutter speed, ISO, etc.”

PopPhoto have just reviewed the 15x zoom Sony Cyber Shot DSC-H9 digital camera.

“At higher ISOs, noise reduced the image quality rating, but we were pleasantly surprised. At ISO 800, the H9 displayed Moderate noise and Extremely High resolution, about 1550 lines average. At ISO 1600 and 3200, noise creeped into Unacceptable—but not by much. This is much better than many highmegapixel compacts we’ve tested, and similar to some recent DSLRs. Plus, the H9’s grain pattern at high ISOs is tight, like grainy color film. So, if not enlarged too much, shots at ISO 3200 could be usable.”

PrinterInfo have reviewed the entry-level Canon iP1800 printer, which delivers a 10x15cm (4”x6”) borderless photograph in 70 seconds.

“If consumers are on a tight enough budget that anything over $50 is undoable, then the Pixma iP1800 is a pretty good option. It provides decent Canon image quality, but it won’t win any prizes for quality or speed. The supporting drivers and software, which is the same as for most other Canon inkjets, makes it a more useful tool than it would be with a stripped down version, especially for users without any editing software of their own. Ink cartridges are comparably priced to the competition.”

“The S5’s image quality results were pleasing, both indoors and out. The majority of our outdoors sample images were sharp thanks to the accurate AF system and high-quality Canon lens, and exposure and color saturation are also very nice. You can also adjust the degree of sharpness, contrast, saturation, and color using the Custom My Colors function. Image noise is a very important factor when choosing a Prosumer model like this, where is it likely that you are going to be using higher sensitivity settings. I feel noise levels are very low at sensitivity settings of ISO 80 and 100, becoming more noticeable in shadow areas at ISO 200 - 400. “

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the Casio EX-Z1050, a 10.1 megapixel digital camera which features a new 2.6-inch wide, 14:9 aspect ratio LCD display.

“The Casio Exilim EX-Z1050 originally retailed for $299 in March 2007, but the price has been dropped by the manufacturer to $269. The camera is less expensive than almost all other 10-megapixel point-and-shoot models. Unfortunately, there are reasons for that. The LCD screen has poor resolution and a limited viewing angle. The 3x lens isn’t very high-quality and at times causes chromatic aberrations. The auto focus system doesn’t seem to work well as most pictures are blurry or simply lacked detail. The processing time is atrocious and caused plenty of missed opportunities.”
