Nikon D40Imaging Resource have published their review of the new Nikon D40 entry level DSLR camera.

“If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, waiting until you could afford a real Nikon DSLR, your time have come at last: While geared for the entry-level market the D40 packs enough features into its diminutive frame to keep serious enthusiasts interested as well. It’s also the smallest and lightest Nikon DSLR to date, so the point & shoot photographer looking to move up to a real SLR, can do so without having to put up with the heft and bulk that the genre usually dictates. And like all consumer SLRs on the market, you can still point & shoot.”

Leica M8Digital Outback Photo have published a field report of the Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera by Magnum photographer Thomas Hoepker.

“10 Megapixels are at the lower end of what I would call professional resolution. 3935 pixels on the long image side seem a bit low when you consider making really large prints which may require 7000 or even 10000 pixels. But it is stunning how much interpolation these Leica files can take. I have yet to try a 44x60” output but the first 24x36 inch Leica print from my HP Designjet looks just great!”

Pentax K100D DSLRTrustedReviews have just reviewed the new 6.1 megapixel Pentax K100D DSLR camera.

“I’ve tested the Pentax system extensively, and I found its performance was generally about the same as the Sony. It usually allowed shake-free shooting at least two stops below the safe speed, but would sometimes allow a shake-free shot as much as four stops slower, while occasionally shots just one stop slower would show slight motion blurring. The trick is, I think, to take several shots if you’re not sure. The chances are that at least one will be shake free.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Dallas, TX: Photographs from Misty Keasler’s Love Hotels series explore the strange, kinky rooms of various sex hotels in Japan. Throughout her career Misty’s documentary work has allowed us to peer into the living spaces of orphanages, shanties found in garbage dumps, gypsy dwellings and her own family’s home in East Texas. This photographic essay gives us a view of a much more foreign type of space, where couples stay for hours rather than days. The rooms have themes such as a schoolroom, a subway room, or a Hello Kitty room.

Pentax K10DDPReview have reviewed the Pentax K10D, which offers 10.2 megapixels, shake-reduction, dust removal system, 22-bit colour, three new shooting modes, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 11 point auto-focusing.

“When we reviewed the K100D we thought Pentax had got their image processing just right, however the single element of the entire K10D equation which left us scratching our heads was just that. Either a poorly implemented demosaicing algorithm or a strange choice of sharpening parameters means that while the K10D’s JPEG images have plenty of ‘texture’ they can lack the edge sharpness we’re used to seeing from semi-pro digital SLR’s.”

Pentax K100D DSLRDigiCamReview have just reviewed the new 6.1 megapixel Pentax K100D DSLR camera.

“The Pentax K100D has very low noise in the test photos taken at ISO200 to ISO800. Noise is low at ISO1600, and acceptable at ISO3200. Noise is lower than the Olympus E-400, and lower than the Fujifilm FinePix F30. You’ll also notice that whilst the F30 displays quite low noise, the K100D’s edges are much smoother than the F30’s, most likely due to the high levels of image processing applied to the F30 images. The camera has excellent abilities, however choosing the highest ISO settings will sacrifice some final image quality. At the other end of the spectrum, it should be obvious that nothing has been sacrificed in terms of quality by not providing an ISO100 mode.”

Photographer Chris Empey has published a review of the Expodisc, a filter that goes in front of the lens and is used to set a custom white balance for your digital camera. Prices vary from $79.95 to $159.95 (plus shipping) depending on the filter size.

“I first saw the ExpoDisc in Action at a Monte Zucker seminar and wasn’t sure how necessary a product like this was, especially in controlled situations like when using studio lights. After using the ExpoDisc, I am convinced that even though the auto white balance feature on digital camera’s is always improving, they can still be improved upon. Using the ExpoDisc takes only a few seconds, yet provides more accurate results than the in camera auto white balance, or even the preset white balance options.”

Introducing this week’s Gary’s Parries column. Everything you always wanted to know about digital cameras, but were afraid to ask. No question too difficult, or too easy. As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, inventor, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected] , and then, En Garde!

You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email, which may be further edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.
