Fujifilm F31fdFujifilm USA Press Release

Valhalla, NY, November 9, 2006 - More than 73 percent of women and almost 50 percent of men feel uneasy in front of a camera. So says the surprising results of a survey conducted recently by FUJIFILM U.S.A., Inc., which commissioned the study to learn why so many folks are apprehensive when asked to smile for a picture. According to survey respondents, weight and hair style concerns are the main reasons for their “picture phobia.” In fact, 44% surveyed preferred to do laundry, 34% would rather pay bills and 18% would rather visit the dentist than pose for a picture. While some would prefer to steer clear of a photographer altogether, many survey respondents cited factors that would make the picture-taking experience – even the most casual one – more pleasurable. Feeling better about appearance (52.9%), help with hair and make-up (35.9%), having the right clothes (26.3%) and/or including family and friends in the picture (27.1%) topped the list. *

Canon EOS 400DDIWA member and Norwegian website Digit.no have published their review of the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.

“Far too often we see image quality being sacrificed for higher image resolution, mainly in terms of increased image noise. This is not the case with the EOS 400D. Despite its 10 MP resolution, it delivers image quality on par with its far more expensive sibling, the EOS 30D. However, it’s a shame that the performance of the standard zoom lens EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 II does not justify the performance of the camera. In comparison with its predecessor, the EOS 350D, all details are either identical or considerably better, at a lower price. Its performance proved to be way beyond expectations. With a SanDisk Extreme IV memory card, we shot twice as many pictures as specified by Canon, with a faster 3.2 fps speed. Amazing! Add to this a high resolution 2.5” LCD screen with eye control sensor, sensor dust removal, picture styles, improved user friendliness and lots of other goodies, and you get a camera that will be placed on top of many wishing lists for Christmas. And it deserves it!”

DPReview are reporting that Sharp have just announced a 12 megapixel 1/1.7” image sensor with 1.88 microns. Given the disappointing image quality of a lot of 10 megapixel compact cameras, another escalation in the megapixel wars is not really a welcome development. What do you think - would you buy a camera with such a small sensor and high pixel count?

Canon PowerShot G7DCResource have reviewed the new Canon G7, which features a 10 megapixel, 1/1.8 inch sensor, DIGIC III image processor, Face Detection, 35-210mm lens and optical image stabilization system.

“Standing on its own, the Canon PowerShot G7 is a very good, full-featured camera. It has very good image quality, superb performance, a stabilized 6X zoom lens, full manual controls, and support for an external flash. However, as a follow-up to the PowerShot G6, this camera is a big disappointment. Gone are the fast lens, rotating LCD, remote control, LCD info display, and RAW support that made that camera one of my favorites. And, with a retail price of almost $600, the G7 is priced dangerously close to entry-level digital SLRs. Do I recommend it? Yep. In the same way that I did the previous G-series cameras? Nope.”

Canon PowerShot A640CameraLabs have reviewed the new Canon A640 and Canon A630, which has 10 megapixels, a 2.5 inch LCD screen and 4x optical zoom lens.

“Speaking of which, the increase to a maximum of 800 ISO is still quite modest compared to the 1600 and even 3200 ISO modes boasted by other compacts, but of course it’s the quality that counts. Interestingly the A640 adopts a different approach to noise compared to most compacts these days. It appears to apply much lower noise reduction to avoid smearing fine detail, although at the cost of visible noise speckles. Ultimately it’s a personal choice as to which looks best, but we prefer Canon’s approach as at least the detail’s there and you can apply further noise reduction in software later as required.”

Canon PIXMA MP600PCMagazine have just reviewed the new Canon PIXMA MP600 all-in-one device.

“The Canon Pixma MP600 Photo All-In-One printer ($199.99 direct) proves that Canon sees no reason to mess with a successful formula. Modeled closely on last year’s Editors’ Choice Pixma MP500—which it replaces in Canon’s line—the MP600 costs the same as the MP500 did originally and offers the same all-in-one (AIO) features and strengths, only more so. In particular, where the MP500 stood out for speed and output quality, the MP600 is faster and delivers even better print quality.”

With 3x optical zoom, 6.3 Megapixels, ISO 1600, Intelligent Flash and new blog mode; plus Fujifilm’s unique Super CCD HR and RP Processor II, the Fujifilm Z5fd’s diminutive size and chic outer-shell look at odds with the amount of technology at its heart. The Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd features the traditional ‘Z’ series sliding lens cover, with a ‘Z5’ motif that lights up in operation, 2.5” scratch resistant LCD screen and non-extending Fujinon 3x optical zoom lens so that it will emerge unscathed from even the most cluttered of spaces.
