Nokia N73DPNow have just reviewed the Nokia N73, a cameraphone with a large 2.4 inch display, 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and support for Internet communities like Flickr.

”...the N73 has plenty of image sharpness to offer, though in difficult lighting we did find that pictures could look a little washed out, partly because of a tendency to over-expose. Although you can compensate using the exposure bias option, the tiny camera’s limited dynamic range will mean you will often have to trade dark shadows with preserved highlights or vice-versa. But as camera phones go, the N73 is clearly above average and printed image quality at 6x4 inches (15x10cm) is hard to distinguish from dedicated point and shoot digital cameras.”

Gary's ParriesThis week’s Gary’s Parries topics are:

1. Panasonic FZ50’s Noisy CCD, It’s Just Not Cricket
2. How Do Add-On Lenses Effect DOF?

Introducing this week’s Gary’s Parries column. Everything you always wanted to know about digital cameras, but were afraid to ask. No question too difficult, or too easy. As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, inventor, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected] , and then, En Garde!

You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email, which may be further edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.

Kodak Easyshare V705The Kodak Easyshare V705 is a unique digital camera that has two lenses and two 7 megapixel sensors. The first lens is a fixed ultrawide 23mm, whilst the second covers 39-117mm. Furthermore, neither lens actually extends from the 23mm thick V705 at any point, making this a truly pocketable model with a 5x zoom range. The Kodak V705 is an upgrade of the V570 and adds more megapixels and a wider ISO range (50-1000). Read our review to find out if the Kodak V705 is a worthy successor.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX2CNET have just reviewed the new 10 megapixel Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX2.

“Which all begs the question: what do we gain by jumping to 10 megapixels? These are extremely small pixels, which equal extremely high noise. Panasonic’s noise-suppression algorithms work pretty well at high ISO speeds—400 to as high as 1,600—but at low ISO sensitivities such as 100, the images are quite noisy. The good news is that they print better than they look onscreen, though you’d be well-advised to avoid serious crops.”

Epson Stylus Photo R265TrustedReviews have the first online review of the new Epson Stylus Photo R265 printer.

“The prints we produced were of fair quality, though photo output was definitely better than text or graphics. The text pages showed quite irregular characters and in some cases you could see mis-registration between lines of print. For general use, they’d probably be OK, but the output is definitely not among the best we’ve seen. Colour graphics were much better, cleanly reproduced and with good solid fills and no notable dither patterns. The paper nap showed through in places, though.”

Panasonic DMC-L1CameraLabs have published their review of the new Panasonic DMC-L1 DSLR camera.

“Panasonic’s Lumix L1 is arguably the most unique digital SLR on sale today. It may share many aspects with the Olympus E330 which provide the Live View, anti-dust system, and allow a flat upper surface, but Panasonic’s gone several steps further by adding a superb lens with optical stabilisation and equipping the L1 with a set of analogue controls which go beyond retro nostalgia to deliver genuine enhancements in usability. The L1 certainly succeeds in making the statement that Panasonic’s arrived in the DSLR market.”

Sony DSC-T10TrustedReviews have reviewed the Sony T10, a 7 slim megapixel digital camera with a 3x zoom lens, 2.5 inch LCD screen, optical image stabilization and a fastest ISO speed of 1000.

“Image quality is a bit of a mixed bag. As already mentioned, you’ll be noise free up to 200 ISO and the Super Steady Shot functionality should mean that you won’t have to dial things up much higher than that too often. The macro setting can also produce impressive results for a camera this compact. However, I did notice that the colours sometimes took on a garish look, no matter what colour setting I employed. Also, the flash had a habit of washing out detail on some shots, while being perfectly balanced on others. And because you’re constantly at the mercy of the T10’s automatic exposure settings, you have no real way of telling exactly what you’ll get.”

Pentax Optio W20ThinkCamera have reviewed the new Pentax Optio W20, a compact digital camera featuring waterproof performance with a slim, flat body design.

“The W20 has a waterproof casing but this doesn’t mean you can take the camera to the depths of the ocean because there are limitations due to pressure. The camera is only waterproof to JIS Class 8 which is 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5m. While this doesn’t immediately sound too impressive remember your typical compact can’t even touch water. This ability is more than OK for using on holiday while you are splashing about in the sea looking at fish or for a little snorkelling - and it is fine for the rain too.”
