Photoxels have published their review of the recently announced 10 megapixel Panasonic DMC-FZ50 camera.
“Image quality is very good to excellent at ISO 100, with low noise and images retaining most of the details. At higher ISOs, images suffer from noise and loss of detail. If you like full manual control, the FZ50 is a delight to use. Manual Focus is also performed using a ring around the lens barrel with the EVF image enlarged for easy focusing. Frequently used settings can be saved. In auto focus mode, Selectable AF Area makes focusing on off-center subjects easy.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have just reviewed the new 6.1 megapixel Pentax K100D DSLR camera.
“Apart from clear and straightforward, the Pentax K100D is also quite small, even though the camera’s size has increased slightly compared to that of its predecessor. Despite the small housing, the K100D DSLR remains very comfortable to hold, as well as pleasantly sturdy. Although the viewfinder is a little on the small and dark side, it proves very decent to work with. There is no doubt that the camera has been neatly finished.”

Imaging Resource have just reviewed the new 10 megapixel Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX2.
“Panasonic made quite a splash last year with photographers (and reviewers) when it released the LX1, a rangefinder-style shooter with a boatload of features that Imaging Resource’s own Mike Pasini called “an excellent little camera, and clearly one of the best bargains on the market.” Mike also said, in his review, that there was “nothing quite like” the LX1 at the time. That still holds true with the new Panasonic LX2.”

Digital Outback Photo have started a diary-review of the Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera, which has a 10 megapixel sensor, focal factor of 1.33x and an ISO range of 160-2500.
“After reading some comments on the net we thought the noise would be more an issue with this camera. Overall the M8 can produce very sharp and detailed images. The noise levels are not like a Canon 5D but still very reasonable in our opinion. This is the first camera for many years that we really have to learn to use. Actually we only have get used to the rangefinder aspect of the M8. Over the next 2 weeks we will use the M8 as one of our main cameras. We keep you posted.”

DCResource have reviewed the new Olympus Stylus 750, which features a 5x optical zoom, image stabilisation and 7 megapixels.
“Overall, the photo quality on the Stylus 750 is good, but not great. On the positive side, photos were well-exposed with pleasing, saturated colors. Purple fringing was well controlled. The bad news is that the camera seems to apply a lot of noise reduction to its photos, giving details a fuzzy appearance. Another place you can see this is in the sky—it’s mottled instead of just one solid color. Add in some softness around the edges and you’ve got photos that don’t look as good as I’d like. This photo is a great example of all the negatives I just mentioned. As I said before, none of this matters at small print sizes—but if you do enlargements, look out.”

DCViews have compared the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 and Canon Digital Rebel XTi DSLR cameras.
“The D80 is a very responsive camera and with 40 JPEG/fine or 7 NEF (RAW) at a speed of 3 frames per second it almost equals the ’ motor drive’ of the EOS Rebel XTi. After such a burst the buffer is written to the memory card. During that time the camera is available for a single shot. All numbers and speeds mentioned heavily depend on the transfer speed of the memory card and the nature of the composition (file size of the JPEG).”

DigitalCameraInfo have just reviewed the Casio EXILIM ZOOM EX-Z850 camera, which offers 8.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens, manual exposure and advanced flash options.
“This camera will certainly appeal to beginning users looking for a camera to grow into with manual control over focus, white balance, exposure and ISO. The camera has a 2.5-inch LCD with 115,200 pixels and a real image optical viewfinder. The Casio Exilim EX-Z850 originally retailed for $399.99, but now retails for $349 on the Casio web site and can be found for even less online.”

Imaging Resource have just reviewed the Pentax Optio A10, which features a shake reduction system, 8 megapixels and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“In keeping with its compact form factor—less than an inch thick—the Pentax A10 uses Pentax’s Sliding Lens System technology which removes elements from the lens’ optical path as it retracts to allow a slimmer profile when the camera is powered off. So while in a head to head comparison, the old OptioS “Altoids model” might be slightly smaller and lighter than the A10, it’s no match when it comes to firepower.”

Steves Digicams have reviewed the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 DSLR camera.
“The D80 is labeled as an amateur dSLR, but don’t let that fool you. You can let your creativity run wild with this model’s wide range of manual controls. Parameters such as Metering mode, Focus mode, and AF-area mode, Center AF area mode, give you extensive control over the camera’s auto exposure and auto focusing functions. Even in its automatic Vari-Program modes, the D80 allows the photographer to control focusing functions and ISO. In addition, the D80 provides 32 Custom Settings that allow you to personalize its operation to fit your shooting style and subjects.”

DPNow have just reviewed the Nokia N73, a cameraphone with a large 2.4 inch display, 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and support for Internet communities like Flickr.
”...the N73 has plenty of image sharpness to offer, though in difficult lighting we did find that pictures could look a little washed out, partly because of a tendency to over-expose. Although you can compensate using the exposure bias option, the tiny camera’s limited dynamic range will mean you will often have to trade dark shadows with preserved highlights or vice-versa. But as camera phones go, the N73 is clearly above average and printed image quality at 6x4 inches (15x10cm) is hard to distinguish from dedicated point and shoot digital cameras.”

This week’s Gary’s Parries topics are:
1. Panasonic FZ50’s Noisy CCD, It’s Just Not Cricket
2. How Do Add-On Lenses Effect DOF?
Introducing this week’s Gary’s Parries column. Everything you always wanted to know about digital cameras, but were afraid to ask. No question too difficult, or too easy. As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, inventor, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected] , and then, En Garde!
You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email, which may be further edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.

The Kodak Easyshare V705 is a unique digital camera that has two lenses and two 7 megapixel sensors. The first lens is a fixed ultrawide 23mm, whilst the second covers 39-117mm. Furthermore, neither lens actually extends from the 23mm thick V705 at any point, making this a truly pocketable model with a 5x zoom range. The Kodak V705 is an upgrade of the V570 and adds more megapixels and a wider ISO range (50-1000). Read our review to find out if the Kodak V705 is a worthy successor.
