Stock Artists Alliance Press Release
Stock Artists Alliance Actively Engages in Developing the Next Generation of Rights Based Licensing
Through dialogue with Getty Images and participation in industry initiatives, the trade organization of stock photographers is an active proponent of new approaches to stock licensing that balance the needs of customers with the interests of photographers. Stock Artists Alliance is pleased to announce that Getty Images revised their “rights ready” model in response to concerns voiced by SAA and photographers about the unlimited license term originally proposed by the company. The “rights ready” model-launched earlier this week in the new Riser collection-now has a ten-year term limit. While SAA had urged Getty to cap licenses at five years or less, this revision has addressed the organization’s chief concern about tying up images for an indefinite future.

Leica Press Release
Chilean photographer Toman Munita has won the Leica Oskar-Barnack-Award 2006 for his recent photo report ‘Kabul – Leaving the Shadows’ a title that reflects both the twilight mood of the pictures as well as their content – the situation of the Afghan population. The photographs show happy, ordinary moments of a gradually emerging normality rather than the violence and poverty you might expect. The ruins and war damage seem almost to be of minor importance. Failing daylight or the semi-darkness of interiors, light and shade fight for dominance and give the colours in the photos a special intensity. Both contrasts of the interplay of light and shade – metaphorical and actual – make the photos a particularly accurate description of the competition’s theme, ‘Man and his Environment’.

CameraLabs have published the first online review of the new Canon EOS 400D (Canon Digital Rebel XTi in the USA), which offers 10 megapixels, a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and new integrated dust removal system.
“Ultimately the Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi is a great entry-level digital SLR which improves on its predecessor in many respects. It has higher resolution without compromising noise levels, a wide variety of anti-dust features, a bigger screen which doubles-up for detailed shooting information, the AF system of its bigger brother and fast overall handling.”

DIWA member Photoxels have reviewed the Kodak Easyshare Z612 camera, which offers 6 megapixels, 12x optical zoom lens and a 2.5 inch LCD.
“The Kodak Z612 is an easy-to-use family camera for capturing all those precious moments. Then print them out using the optional Photo Printer 500 at the touch of a button—even without turning your computer on! If you do not want to post-process any images in an image editing software, the Kodak Z612’s default settings produce images that are sharp and rich in colours straight out of the camera.”

CNET have reviewed the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 DSLR camera.
“Image quality from the Nikon D80 is quite impressive. Colors were accurate and neutral and the camera’s meter did an excellent job of reading the scene and providing an accurate exposure. At times, mostly in extreme cases when the scene was dominated by darkness, the Matrix metering tended to preserve detail in the shadows at the expense of highlights, though typically, this is what one would’ve intended in that situation. Plus, switching to selectable zone metering or using the camera’s massive plus or minus 5EV exposure compensation should help in those situations.”

DCResource have just reviewed the new 6.1 megapixel Pentax K100D DSLR camera.
“Photo quality was excellent in most cases. The K100D took well-exposed photos with vivid colors and pleasing sharpness—this camera is clearly aimed toward the consumer set. Noise levels are nice and low through ISO 800, and ISO 1600 is still usable, with ISO 3200 only for desperate situations. Purple fringing and redeye were not a problem. The 18 - 55 mm kit lens isn’t the greatest, with noticeable vignetting in several of my real world photos. Remember: when it comes to lenses, you get what you pay for.”

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the 6.1 megapixel KODAK EASYSHARE C663 Zoom digital camera.
“Some of these issues can be cleared up with Kodak’s built-in Perfect Touch technology (which can be applied in the playback mode), but there is much to be desired with the C663’s pictures. In the end, the cons outweigh the pros for the Kodak EasyShare C663 – especially considering the $299 price tag.”

ThinkCamera have reviewed the Casio EX-Z1000 compact digicam, which offers 10 megapixels, 2.8 inch LCD screen, IS0 3200 and an interesting new Zoom Continuous Shutter mode that allows you to compare a wide angle and a telephoto shot in the same display and to take both shots simultaneously.
“It will come as no surprise that the Z1000 gives great pictures. Just like the Z600 they are punchy and full of colour. In some cases this can get a little out of hand. There are a couple of “landscape” modes - scenery and natural green. Both of these increase sharpening and pump up the saturation. For my taste these go too far - greens become over saturated and slightly sickly.”

ThinkCamera have reviewed the Canon PowerShot S3 IS, a 6 megapixel camera with an image stabilized 12x zoom lens, ISO 800 and a 2 inch LCD screen.
“Image quality is good especially at ISO 80 and 100; at higher ISOs you either see noise or smoothing from noise reduction and the ISO 800 setting is noisy enough that you’ll rarely use it. That’s annoying, particularly as it’s one of the selling points of this model over the S2. There’s a good range of colour and tone; colours are bright and accurate, saturated without being over-egged. Detail and sharpness is acceptable, though we found some images were a little “software-led” than with similar cameras. There is some chromatic aberration, but mainly at extreme zoom.”

ePhotoZine have reviewed the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 DSLR camera.
“The camera produces usable images up to the 1600ISO mark, although by that time there is some noise creeping in. The Hi-1 setting, equivalent to approx 3200ISO is there and depending on subject you may be able to use it but for my taste it is a little over the top in the noise department. The Hi-noise reduction system in the camera does help some, but at the expense of detail. All of the ISO adjustments, operated by pressing a button on the back of the camera and rotating the rear control wheel, are in 1/3rd stop increments, which is handy.”

ThinkCamera have reviewed the Samsung Digimax L85, which features 8-megapixels, 5x optical zoom (38-190mm - 35mm equivalent), 2.5-inch LCD display (230K pixels), full manual control and 11 preset scene modes.
“Let’s get over this one straight away. Our reviewer called the L85 “ugly” (in fact he compared it to a Trabant). Pictures of the Samsung L85 really don’t do it justice. It is bigger and bulkier than many of the compacts we see here at ThinkCamera but it has a very tactile rubberised finish that sets it apart from other cameras. Depending on your viewpoint this makes it “distinctive” or “retro”. Having lived with one for a couple of weeks I found the L85 growing on me.”

The-Digital-Picture.com have taken a look at the new Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di lens.
“Build quality is not rugged, but it is solid - very adequate I’d say. The included hood is similarly built. The rubber on the zoom ring is grippy, soft and deeply ribbed. The zoom and focus rings turn smoothly. Tamron’s rear lens cap only attaches at one position - a bit of a pain since I’m used to Canon’s 3 attachment positions. Tamron’s excellent center-pinch 67mm front cap more than makes up for this pain - I’ve considered putting these on my Canon lenses - And many of Sigma’s lenses desperately need them.”
