Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the new 6 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5 camera.

“The 6x optical Lumix DC Vario zoom lens performed superbly during the practice tests. The images are sharp, and excellent results are produced over the entire range. Although a certain degree of chromatic aberration and distortion is visible in the wide-angle mode, it is not insurmountable. Upon zooming in lightly, these small wrinkles are quickly evened out, which ensures you will be presented with a decent and attractive end result.”

Olympus mju 810DCViews have just reviewed the Olympus mju 810 digital camera, which offers 8 megapixels, 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD, and a stainless steel, weatherproof body.

“Quite a unique feature is the Digital Image Stabilisation function. When there is a risk of camera shake at the capturing stage, pressing the DIS key will increase ISO sensitivity and set a fast shutter speed to avoid blur. Naturally, setting a high ISO value will increase image noise, but this could still be a better alternative than a blurry image. Also, if an image later appears to suffer from slight camera shake you can retouch the image right in camera by pressing DIS. A gyro sensor embedded in the camera detects the vertical and horizontal range of the camera shake in the shot and then uses this information to compensate and sharpen the blurred image. A copy is then saved to memory while the original is kept for future reference should you need it. Admittedly this is no cure for seriously blurred images but again it helps if no other solution is available. What this function does in fact is similar to unsharp masking in Photoshop, where contrast between edges is increased and the image appears sharper to the eye. Keep in mind that there is a limit as to what this function can achieve though.”

Gary's ParriesThis week’s Gary’s Parries topics are:

1. 100 Megapixels In Your Pocket
2. I Saw The Light

Introducing this week’s Gary’s Parries column. Everything you always wanted to know about digital cameras, but were afraid to ask. No question too difficult, or too easy. As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, inventor, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected] , and then, En Garde!

You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email, which may be further edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.

Nike Rooney AdBy Greer McNally

This week has seen the international press go a little wild about Wayne Rooney. Contrary to expectation, it has little to do with his behaviour or play on the pitch and more to do with his posing power. So what is the source of the furore?

Surprisingly it’s just one photograph in which the England striker, painted with the cross of St George, yells skyward. Nike’s tagline “Just Do It” runs as the only wording on the poster. In advertising terms the one image campaign has been a massive success. Since the photograph was revealed on Tuesday the story has been run as far a field as the Chicago Sun-Times in the US and in nearly every national newspaper on the English news-stands.

The Daily Mail has led the attack on the picture. Interviewing Ealing North MP Stephen Pounder, in whose constituency the ad runs on a giant billboard, Pounder labelled it “crass” and “offensive”, and Rev Rod Thomas of the Church of England evangelical group Reform dismissed it as a “publicity stunt”.

Internet Speed Test Toolset for PhotographersmyPhotopipe.com Press Release

Atlanta, Georgia and Louisville, Ky. “Photographers are uploaders, not downloaders, and broadband is puzzling to them,” said myPhotopipe.com President Pete Casabonne. “In our recent survey of 52 photographers, studios and agencies, 9 out 10 of our broadband photographers had upload speeds at or below 380K – barely over the legal minimum of 200K, the threshold stipulated by the FCC to qualify as broadband. The broadband experience is not living up to expectations.” To narrow that gap, myphotopipe.com today announced a new set of tools launched at http://www.myphotopipe.com/speedtest/index.html. The tools include an upload test, a download test, a file calculator, and an upload estimator. Additional tools will be released in the next several weeks. Said Casabonne, “In the IT world a speed test is nothing new but to a photographer, who is a mechanical person dealing with lenses and attending events, it is so we selected Ookla, because it has one of the coolest interfaces, and we designed a data pad that calculates their upload time based on the size of their photographs. Overall, these tools demystify broadband and help our photographers better plan their workflow.”

Nikon D200TrustedReviews have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D200 digital SLR camera.

“However it’s easy to see why the camera is so bulky. It is extremely robust, and is designed to withstand rough treatment and serious outdoor use. It has a strong magnesium alloy body, and is equipped with rubber dust/moisture seals around the controls and external hatches. While not strictly speaking waterproof, the D200 should be able to withstand light showers, dust or water spray from aquatic activities. One surprising omission in this regard is the lack of a seal around the lens mount, as is found on fully professional cameras such as the Canon EOS 1DS MkII.”
