Luminous Landscape have published their review of the new Canon PROGRAPH iPF5000 large format printer.
“Some initial comments on the web about print quality suggested that prints from the iPF 5000 had something less than full continuous tone quality. I’m not sure where that came from but I can assure you that this is definitely not the case. I have looked at prints under both a high quality 3X Schneider loup as well as a 10X loupe. With the naked eye prints are definitely continuous tone, just as you’d expect them to be. Under a 3X loupe the dithering pattern is just visible. Under a 10X loupe it is clearly visible just as it is on every inkjet printer.”

DCResource have published their review of the SD700 IS (also known as the Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS), a 6 megapixel camera with an image stabilized 4x zoom lens (first time on an IXUS camera).
“The PowerShot SD700 is a compact and very stylish camera. It’s made almost entirely of metal, and it feels nice and solid. The camera is easy to hold and operate, though some of the buttons on the back of the camera could be larger. The SD700 gives you a little more zoom than your typical ultra-compact, with a 4X lens instead of the usual 3X. This is Canon’s first ultra-compact with optical image stabilization, and it works well during my time with the camera. While it won’t work miracles, the OIS system will make your photos sharper and movies steadier. The SD700 also features a large and sharp 2.5” LCD display that’s easily visible in low light. Thankfully Canon didn’t dump the optical viewfinder on this camera—that feature seems to be going the way of the dinosaur in the ultra-compact class.”

DIWA member and Norwegian website Digit.no have the first online review of the 6.2-megapixel HP Photosmart R727 digital camera.
“The inexpensive Photosmart R727 is filled with a multitude of software related features, most of them quite innovative and very useful. A 3x zoom lens is completely integrated into a slim and solid metal housing with a high resolution 2.5” LCD screen, making the camera user friendly and comfortable in most respects. Quite surprisingly, the camera delivers excellent image quality, only disturbed by some excessive lens distortion and colour fringing. Unfortunately, some imperfect camera construction details deteriorate the overall impression, such as its mediocre low light auto focus ability and useless AF assisting lamp, its weak flash, lack of optical finder and A/V output, slow startup and image storing, no camera settings memory and maximum ISO 400 sensitivity. Also, left hand fingers are easily obstructing the lens, some buttons are uncomfortable and sound and video recording may be activated unwillingly. Nevertheless, the HP Photosmart R727 delivers excellent value for money if you are able to overlook or overcome its weaknesses.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the Canon Powershot SD600 (also called the Canon Digital IXUS 60), which has 6 megapixels, 3x zoom lens, ISO 800, Widescreen (16:9) mode, and a 2.5 inch LCD.
“There’s no arguing with it—Canon makes some of the most consistently appealing compact cameras around, mostly because they don’t skimp on image quality. With the new PowerShot SD600 Digital ELPH, that steady attention to imaging detail continues with several new small but substantial improvements. In particular, the SD600 is the latest camera from Canon to tackle one of the hottest issues in digital cameras right now: low-light shooting.”

Canon are set to meet their target of a 46% profit rise for camera sales, reports Reuters. “Iwashita said it may top that figure on robust sales of new products, including the EOS 30D (pictured) digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera, a high-end model launched in March that features a 8.2 megapixel image sensor and sells for about 160,000 yen ($1,386).” Canon also said that they will not enter a price war with the likes of Sony and Panasonic, two new entrants to the DSLR market.

With Infiniti Lightscribe discs you can burn and ‘scribe’ your CD-R using the same device. A special coating is used on the upper surface of the discs that allows a Lightscribe enabled disc burner to ‘burn’ a design onto it. Focused light energy from the laser inside a Lightscribe drive causes a chemical reaction on the thin, dye coated surface on the disc. Because there is no printing involved there is no need for the extra expense of a separate printer.. All Lightscribe designs are etched using the laser already inside your disc drive.

PCMagazine have reviewed the new 10x zoom, 5 megapixel, compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 digital camera.
“When Panasonic introduced the Lumix DMC-TZ1, it claimed the camera was the world’s smallest superzoom, but Kodak has since stolen its thunder by introducing the dual-lens EasyShare V610, an even tinier, more ultracompact superzoom, with the added bonus of being Bluetooth-enabled. The 610 also looks better than the chunkier, less stylish TZ1. But if picture quality is your top priority, the TZ1 delivers. And at a low list price of $349.95, it’s something of a bargain.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have just reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix V10 Zoom, a 5 megapixel camera with 3 inch LCD screen that can also play games!
“I have nothing but praise for the small lens, which really does live up to its promise. It produces sharp images that are rich in detail, and is virtually free of distortion. Typical issues such as chromatic aberration simply do not occur with this camera, and the combination of the excellent white balance and light metering ensures the Fujifilm V10 offers an extraordinarily strong digital combination. It goes without saying that the large format 3 inch screen is simply a joy to work with. As a result, you are more likely to share the stored photos when surrounded by your friends and family, which allows you to relive the exact moment of capturing time and time again on a large format (that is: for camera standards) screen.”

DPReview have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix P3 camera, which offers 8.1 megapixels, 3.5x optical zoom lens and a 2.5 inch LCD.
“The Coolpix P3 offers a reviewer something of a dilemma; am I to judge it based on its potential to produce superb images in the right hands? Or do I rate it on the fact that not only do the default settings result in images that are way too soft and ‘flat’ for what we presume to be the target users, but that the autofocus and auto exposure systems often get things wrong too? In the end the answer has to be the latter; a camera like the P3 is most likely to be used in good old ‘point and shoot’ mode, and I’m afraid that Nikon’s (admirable in some ways) decision to avoid ‘over processed’ results will disappoint the typical user.”

CNET have reviewed the Samsung Digimax L60, which has 6 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens, MPEG4 video recording and a 2.4-inch LCD screen.
“A fairly flexible point-and-shoot camera, the Digimax L60 is the 6-megapixel member of Samsung’s L series of high-end point-and-shoot cameras. This easy-to-pocket camera is about the size of an iPod and weighs just 5.3 ounces. It sports a nice handful of image settings for the casual shooter, but more advanced photographers might find it lacking. Users who prefer lots of manual controls might want to check out the L60’s bigger brother, the Samsung Digimax L85.”

“Samsung categorizes its S-series cameras as point-and-shoots on its Web site, but with the controls included in these models, they have the potential to reach beyond the majority of simple snapshot cameras. Unfortunately, a not so intuitive set of menus and less than stellar image quality keep the 8.1-megapixel Samsung Digimax S800 from reaching its potential.”
