The world’s biggest travelling cameracomes to PHotoEspaña. After four weeks capturing the wilderness of Spain in a series of gigantic photographs, the cameratruck arrives in Madrid to be exhibited at the country’s leading photography festival. American photographer Shaun Irving and English Art Director Richard Browse have created what they believe to be the world’s largest mobile camera. Designed in America and constructed in Spain, the cameratruck is a simple box camera built right inside a standard delivery truck. Measuring 5 metres long, 2 metres wide and 2 metres high, the gigantic camera is capable of taking pictures almost 3 metres across. It’s the perfect camera to capture a subject as vast as Nature, the photographic theme for this year’s PHotoEspaña, where the cameratruck will be on display along with the photographs taken during its four week journey across Spain.

DIWA member Steves Digicams have just reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix V10 Zoom, a 5 megapixel camera with 3 inch LCD screen that can also play games!
“The first of Fujifilm’s V-series of point-n-shoot digicams, the V10 sidesteps the resolution race in favor of thoughtful new features that improve your results in common shooting situations. The V10’s 5.1 Megapixel 5th Generation Super CCD-HR is complemented with a versatile 3.4x optical zoom lens and a large 3-inch LCD. The camera’s automatic and scene modes provide the ease of use demanded by beginners, and its manual mode provides the more advanced photographer with control of exposure compensation and white balance.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital are first off the blocks with a review of the Casio EX-Z1000 compact digicam, which offers 10 megapixels, 2.8 inch LCD screen, IS0 3200 and an interesting new Zoom Continuous Shutter mode that allows you to compare a wide angle and a telephoto shot in the same display and to take both shots simultaneously.
“Although the image resolution of 10 Megapixels forms a considerable asset, it does not provide the Casio Exilim EX Z1000 with the actual surplus value that Casio might be hoping for. Unless we are talking about the handy functions, which help enable an extra Megapixel reserve. In fact, plenty of pixels remain when the Casio EX Z1000 performs its trick. The digital zoom, operated either directly, or via the Quick Zoom function, results in high image quality. Granted, it may no longer be the 10 Megapixels, but 5 Megapixels still offers more than sufficient quality to ensure an excellent print.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the new 6 megapixel Sony DSC-H2 ultrazoom camera.
“The newly-released DSC-H2 model updates the H1 with a larger CCD at 6.0-megapixels, and extends a few capabilities as well, with a wider ISO range and an optional function guide for onscreen help. Most of the H2’s functions will be familiar to users of other Sony digital cameras, and newcomers to the line will appreciate the camera’s simplicity. The Sony H2 features the same 12x optical zoom lens and Image Stabilization technology as the H1, and offers full manual to full auto exposure control, with a nice selection of creative tools at the user’s disposal.”

CameraLabs have published their review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“If however you do have an existing collection of Canon lenses designed for a full-frame body, then the 5D will be a very tempting prospect. Seeing these lenses deliver the exact same field of view as they did on a film camera is a familiar and surprisingly reassuring experience for anyone who knows that, say, their 24mm would be perfect for a particular composition. It’s also undeniably nice to look through a large viewfinder which makes cropped bodies feel almost claustrophobic in comparison.”

DigiCamReview have reviewed the new 5 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ3 camera.
“Noise is visible at even the lowest ISO setting on the Panasonic Lumix LZ3. At ISO200 and ISO400 noise is very noticable and detail is being lost with jagged edges. The high sensitivity mode on the Panasonic LZ3 removes a dramtica amount of detail - so much so that at ISO1600 the ‘W’ is practically non-existant. The Olympus Mju 720SW has much lower noise and has a much better high ISO800 and ISO1600 mode - noise is high, but the camera keeps much more detail compared to the LZ3. You would expect a lower resolution digital camera such as the 5 megapixel LZ3 to have lower noise than a 7 megapixel camera, but unfortunately this isn’t the case. With the Panasonic Lumix LZ3 I would say that ISO above 200 is to be avoided.”

DIWA member and Norwegian website Digit.no have reviewed the Ricoh GR Digital, an 8 megapixel compact digicam based on the GR Series of 35mm compact film cameras.
“The GR Digital is a digital version of the analogue prestige model Ricoh GR1, launched some 10 years ago. Built on the same robust and light-weight magnesium chassis, a fixed focal length equivalent to 28 mm wide angle, and numerous manual controls, the GR Digital is a most interesting camera for the connoisseur. The digital part, with 8.3 MP image resolution and a 2.5” LCD screen, adds the features required in a modern high-end camera. The GR Digital delivers outstanding image quality at low ISO speeds, but suffers from fairly high image noise at higher sensitivities. The lack of optical viewfinder and optical zoom, insufficient buffer memory, slow DNG storage speed, and mediocre battery capacity are the main disadvantages of the Ricoh GR Digital.”

Shuttertalk have just reviewed the new Crumpler Sinking Barge Photo Backpack.
“The Sinking Barge has 2 main storage areas – the top section being for a laptop, while the front section houses your camera gear. The front compartment of the bag opens up via 2 way zipper to reveal padded compartment with 2 adjustable dividers, giving essentially room for a DSLR with lens attached, and 2 additional lenses/accessories on each side. This compartment is covered by a zippered mesh to hold everything securely in place. It was a snug fit, but it was able to accommodate my Nikon D50 with 18-70 zoom lens, 55-200 zoom lens and SB-600 flashgun. I think if you had a bigger body or lenses, you would probably have to reconfigure the dividers to with some trade off in storage space.”

CNET have just reviewed the new 6 megapixel Nikon Coolpix S5 digital camera.
“Nikon’s Coolpix S5 is a slim, attractive 6-megapixel shirt-pocket camera that hits all the right design notes. Its 2.5-inch LCD screen, satin silver finish, and internally zooming 3X optical lens (35mm-to-105mm equivalent) will be a hit with style-conscious snapshooters, and its scrolling click wheel gives users an easy, MP3 player-like interface. The quick-shooting camera boasts very good build quality, color rendition, and sharpness, but some minor image flaws may disappoint eagle-eyed photographers. A simple feature set and basic shooting options will serve casual snapshooters, but they probably won’t satisfy enthusiasts who like to tinker with settings.”

2. How To Achieve Smaller Image Files
3. Busy As A Bee
Introducing this week’s Gary’s Parries column. Everything you always wanted to know about digital cameras, but were afraid to ask. No question too difficult, or too easy. As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected], and then, En Garde!
You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email, which may be further edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.

A few years ago the word “blog” didn’t exist. Nowadays blogs and blogging are everyday terms that most people in the street are aware of (even if they don’t fully understand them). Photoblogs are a big part of this ever-growing trend, with sites like Chromasia and daily dose of imagery being just two excellent examples. I’ve recently started my own, EverydayEye, in an attempt to make myself get out there and take photos on a more regular basis. Do you have your own photo blog (feel free to list the URL)? If so, what is your principal reason for having it? Is it the main way that you share your photos with the world? Has it had any impact on the way that you take photographs? Shout out now…

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX1 is the world’s first digital camera with an image sensor in the new, popular 16:9 wide-screen format. The camera also offers many exciting features, such as 8.4 MP image resolution and a 4x Leica 28mm wide angle zoom lens with optical stabiliser. Its robust metal body underlines the camera’s overall qualities, while a large 2.5” LCD screen and user-friendly design make it suitable for most photo enthusiasts.
Amsterdam, 19th May, 2006 – DIWA (Digital Imaging Websites Association), a world-wide organisation of collaborating websites within digital imaging, today announces a DIWA Gold Award to the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX1 digital compact camera. The LX1 proves that Panasonic has serious ambitions with its LUMIX digital camera range. The public has embraced their compact models for various reasons, but the most obvious benefit is Panasonic’s MEGA O.I.S optical stabiliser. In the LX1, this valuable feature is combined with a 4x Leica DC Vario-Elmarit wide angle zoom lens from the world-renowned lens manufacturer Leica, featuring focal lengths equivalent to 28 – 112 mm f/2.8-4.9. The lens is tailor-made for the camera’s unique 8.4 Megapixel image sensor in the popular 16:9 wide-screen TV format, which also provides the world’s first 848x480 16:9 Wide VGA format movie recording at 30 fps.
