Epson Press Release
TOKYO, Japan, March 14, 2006 - Seiko Epson Corporation (“Epson”) has successfully developed the world’s first print head*1 using an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) light source. In addition to its development of OLED displays, Epson has researched the characteristics of OLED as an electronic device. Specifically, Epson has succeeded in creating a print head that uses OLED as a light source (OLED print head), opening the way for utilization of OLED as a new printing technology for printers. At present, electrophotographic printing technologies for copiers and printers use either laser or LED light sources. Epson merged the many years of expertise it had accumulated in printing and display technology, and partnered with Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. to jointly develop a super bright OLED that can be used in printing. Printing tests using a prototype of an OLED-based print head have produced printouts quality comparable to or better than those produced by conventional laser printers.

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D200 digital SLR camera.
“Even though it is not necessarily the most important asset of a camera, the resolution virtually always remains people’s prime interest. With 10 Megapixels the Nikon D200 raises the bar another notch for digital SLRs in this class. The sensor, ordered again from Sony, is a CCD type image sensor. At this time we still see the manufacturers divided in two camps; whilst one clearly opts for the CMOS, the other prefers to stay with the CCD sensor.”

PCMagazine have just reviewed the new 80Gb Epson P-4000 photo viewer.
“The Epson P-4000 is the latest version of Epson’s hard drive–based photo viewer/media player. Although the only truly significant change from the Epson P-2000 is a larger hard drive—the P-4000 holds 80GB of photos, video, and audio—we decided to take it for a test run and compare it with many of the other popular portable media players that have been released in the market since the P-2000 came out. Overall, the P-4000 is still the hands-down winner on screen quality (thanks to its ultragorgeous 3.8-inch LCD).”

DigiCamReview have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 which combines a 12x optical zoom lens with MEGA O.I.S. in a compact body.
“Noise is higher than average at every ISO setting with the Panasonic Lumix FZ7, so it’s best sticking with ISO80 or ISO100 for the best results. If you are likely to resize photos for the internet or print small 6"x4” photos then going upto ISO200 may be useful. The high ISO modes, ISO800 and ISO1600 produce noise free images, but detail is so blurred as to make the images look very poor. Noise is much higher on the FZ7 than on the Olympus SP-500 upto ISO400, where noise levels appear quite similar, the FZ7’s noise is much more blotchy - whereas the SP-500’s noise seems much more fine grained and consistant.”

CNET have published a review of the new, budget 6 megapixel Sony Cyber-shot S600 digital camera.
“The chunky, 6.7-ounce Sony Cyber Shot DSC-S600 offers remarkable flexibility despite its bargain price. Its 6-megapixel resolution and moderately wide 31mm-to-93mm (35mm-film-camera equivalent) lens, in conjunction with pretty decent low-light photos and extended shutter-speed latitude in moderate light, combine to produce a point-and-shoot camera with enough versatility to handle most picture-taking situations.”

DCResource have reviewed the new 6 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5 camera.
“Photo quality was a mixed bag on the DMC-LZ5. On the positive side, photos were well-exposed, with vibrant colors, good sharpness, and minimal purple fringing. The biggest downside is noise, in addition to the vignetting and soft corner issues that I just mentioned. Noise is noticeable in most of my sample photos (most of which were taken at ISO 80), especially on flat surfaces, details like grass and leaves, or in the sky (which looks mottled). Now, this noise isn’t going to be a problem if you’re making smaller prints (4 x 6 or 5 x 7), but if you’re doing larger prints (or just like to view your photos at 100% on your PC) then it may bother you.”
