DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Olympus FE-120, a 6 megapixel camera with 3x zoom lens and 1.8 inch LCD screen.
“Image quality was average for a 6-megapixel entry-level model. The majority of our sample photos were sharp and showed pleasing color saturation. However, there was visible edge softness on several of our images, especially along the left hand side of the frame. The 3x optical zoom lens offers flexibility in composing your shots with a focal range of approx. 38 - 114mm (35mm equivalent.) As usual, it shows average amounts of barrel distortion and pincushioning at the wide angle and telephoto extremes, respectively.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the Canon PowerShot A410 compact digital camera, an entry level model with 3.2 megapixels and 1.5 inch LCD screen which replaces the A400.
“The PowerShot A410 truly excels as far as image quality, exposure and the speed of image processing is concerned. A feature which without counts as considerable added value is the integration of the powerful DIGIC II processor. This technique which is also used in Canon’s professional digital reflex cameras contributes essentially to the remarkably fast and economical features of the Canon PowerShot A410 digital camera.”

DPReview have reviewed the Olympus SP-500UZ digital camera, which has a 10x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-380mm, 6 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and an electronic viewfinder.
”...the feature set is impressive, but (aside, perhaps from RAW capture) there’s nothing here that jumps out and says ‘buy me instead of a Panasonic / Canon / Sony’. The extra megapixel over most of its direct competitors makes little - if any - difference to the quality of results, and although noise is fairly well controlled, the images are pretty soft and the number of shots lost to camera shake or focus errors (at the long end of the zoom) is high.”

ePhotoZine have a review of an intriguing device called the Pocket Wizard, which allows you to remotely control your camera.
“Have you ever fancied being able to fire your camera remotely while sat somewhere more comfortable? I mean you paid all that money for a camera, the least you can expect is for it to do some of the hard work for you. After hearing stories from other sports photographers and reading lots of good information about the Pocket Wizard system I thought it was about time I gave them a try.”

Introducing Everyday Eye (http://www.everydayeye.com) - a new photoblog by yours truly. Yes, I’ve finally joined the masses and started my very own daily photo website in an attempt to give a fresh impetus to my photography. A photo a day, makes you work, rest and play (or so the makers of Mars chocolate bars would have you believe). “Launches” is perhaps a bit strong - “crept quietly” is a more fitting description for something that has been in the pipeline since the start of 2006. So head over to Everyday Eye, take a look at the admittedly limited selection of photos, leave some comments, bookmark and return daily.

It just occurred to me this week that I hadn’t printed any of my own photographs for quite a while, a few weeks in fact, and that my Epson 2100 printer is quietly gathering dust in the corner of my office. Recently, more official reports also conclude that printing is on the decline, despite the availability of printing technology that is more life-like and durable than ever before. Back in the pre-digital days, prints either made in the darkroom or at your local lab were the best way to view your work. Now it seems that the LCD monitor has taken over as the viewing device of choice. So, when was the last time that you made a print? Is printing your first choice method of evaluating and sharing your photographs? What kind of printer do you own (if any) and how could it be improved? Shout out now…

“I was very pleased with our sample images when using the SHQ image quality mode. The 10x optical zoom lens offers incredible versatility in composing shoots, covering an equivalent focal range of 38 - 380mm. The wide angle extreme will afford nice landscape and interior shots, while its telephoto end will bring distant subjects up close and personal. I noticed moderate barrel distortion at full wide angle as well as slight pincushioning at the telephoto end. CA (Chromatic Aberration) or purple fringing was present in many of our samples, around brightly lit objects.”

Looks can be deceiving, however, and the F11 is actually one of the best creative and pocketable digicams that you can currently buy, thanks mainly to its amazing sensor.
