Samsung Electronics Press Release

SEOUL, Korea—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Nov. 28, 2005—Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., announced today that it has developed the world’s largest transmissive TFT LCD (thin-film transistor, liquid crystal display), with sufficiently high resolution to display digital television content. The seven-inch, 640x480 (VGA-standard) flexible display uses a transparent plastic substrate that is thinner, lighter and more durable than the conventional LCD glass panels used today. Moreover, the full-color transmissive LCD panel maintains a constant thickness even when it is bent.

Considered the next-generation in flat panel displays, this technology involves the use of pliable plastic instead of rigid glass substrates in TFT-LCD production. The plastic will not break when flexed, allowing much greater freedom in commercial designs requiring flexible full-color, high-resolution display components. The seven-inch flexible TFT-LCD is optimized for mobility applications, including cell phones and notebook computers. System designers and OEMs also may apply the advanced Samsung display technology to new applications, such as fashion-enhancing or wearable electronic display designs, thanks to its differentiated flexible format.

Kodak Easyshare P880DesignTechnica have reviewed the new Kodak Easyshare P880 digital camera. The Kodak Easyshare P880 is an 8 megapixel model with wide-angle 24–140 mm zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“Kodak handles RAW image files (13MB-plus) rather uniquely. It has an in-camera system to “develop” them. If you haven’t taken the plunge for Adobe Photoshop CS2 ($500), the de facto editing program for RAW files, the P880 lets you adjust the file in the camera while keeping an original copy (for the day you plunk down the cash for CS2). Some of the adjustments are exposure compensation, color mode, sharpness, contrast, white balance and white balance compensation. This is a very useful feature for photographers who are dipping their toes into RAW. The developed file is a JPEG or a TIFF, files that can be easily handled by less expensive editing programs. Kodak is to be commended for this.”

Epson Stylus Pro 4800Luminous Landscape have reviewed ColorByte Phatte Black, which allows you to load both Photo Black and Matte Black inks at the same time on the Epson 4800, 7800 and 9800 printers.

“‘There’s little more to say about using Imageprint 6.1 with Phatte Black. It simply works transparently. Load your preferred paper, select a profile, and print. The installation process is straightforward, and only requires that you insert the special Matte Black cartridge and run a purge routine. This involves loading a special TIFF file and printing about 20-30 sheets of plain paper using a special purge profile. This removes any Light Light Black ink in the printers lines. You only need to do this the first time.”

Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1Czech website and DIWA member LetsGoDigital have published their review of the 8 megapixel Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1.

“Naturally, there is more to a digital camera than design alone. It is what’s inside that counts, a sound piece of advice that we too have often had whispered into our ear. To achieve just this, Konica Minolta has used one of their own developments, the CxProcess III processor. In combination with the lens, this should lead to spectacular results. Theoretically, this is far from easily accomplished, as the Konica Minolta X1 has a resolution of 8 Megapixels. On a small image sensor, this can quickly lead to a lot of digital noise with higher ISO values and other unpleasant things such as purple fringing and a smaller dynamic range. However, with Konica Minolta’s vast array of experience, we are keen to see our expectations met.”

Nikon Coolpix S3DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S3, a 6 megapixel update of the S1 and S2. The Nikon S3 has a 3x 35-105mm zoom lens and 2.5 inch monitor.

“The version of the camera that I received has a white housing, but the camera is also available in platinum/silver or matte black, this differs per region. Although the design is already familiar to us for nearly a year now, the renewed acquaintance still is positive. In my opinion, the design may be called successful. This year seems to become the year of design cameras; around us we notice various designs being introduced from 5 - 8 Megapixels. The Nikon design that first turned up this year is a strong design, it has its own face and can be called a true eye-catcher.”

Canon IXUS i ZoomDIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the new Canon IXUS i Zoom digital camera (also known as the SD30). The Canon IXUS i Zoom is a 5 megapixel model with a 2.4x optical zoom lens and 1.8 inch LCD screen.

“It’s quite amazing that Canon was able to equip a camera like the Canon Digital IXUS i Zoom with the second generation DIGIC II processor. This processor is without a doubt a surplus value for this camera and guarantees improvement concerning the speed in which the complicated editing algorithms are measured. Besides that the DIGIC II processor has to be able to keep the overall image quality on a high level without having this influencing the general performance of the camera. Look at the faster startup time and the higher processing speed of storing the images, and you can’t deny the fact that your holding a combination in your hands that is guaranteed to be successful.”

Saturday ShoutThis week’s Saturday Shout considers the hidden costs of buying a digital camera. Digital Cameras are getting ever cheaper. So cheap, in fact, that you can now buy a 5 megapixel model for £100, a 7 megapixel model for £200, and a DSLR with a lens for £450. But are those prices misleading the consumer? What do you actually get in return for your money? It’s long been an accepted fact in the digital camera industry that you don’t necessarily get everything that you need in the box. You almost always get a memory card that’s far too small, or in the case of digital SLRs, no memory card at all. Often the camera is supplied with completely inadequate batteries (non-rechargeable AA’s that last for a couple of hours spring to mind). And sometimes, a camera manufactuer will even talk about certain functionality in the user guide, but not actually supply the required part in the standard camera kit. An analogy to this situation is buying a car - you wouldn’t expect your new Ford Golf Megane to have no engine or petrol tank, but that’s exactly what a lot of digital cameras are supplied like when you buy one (although it’s obviously a lot easier to fit those parts yourself in a digicam!).

Does this make you hot under the collar, or do you actually prefer to have the choice of buying your own accessories? Which camera manufacturers are the worst offenders? How much is the real cost of buying a digital camera? Shout out now…
