This week’s Saturday Shout considers the hidden costs of buying a digital camera. Digital Cameras are getting ever cheaper. So cheap, in fact, that you can now buy a 5 megapixel model for £100, a 7 megapixel model for £200, and a DSLR with a lens for £450. But are those prices misleading the consumer? What do you actually get in return for your money? It’s long been an accepted fact in the digital camera industry that you don’t necessarily get everything that you need in the box. You almost always get a memory card that’s far too small, or in the case of digital SLRs, no memory card at all. Often the camera is supplied with completely inadequate batteries (non-rechargeable AA’s that last for a couple of hours spring to mind). And sometimes, a camera manufactuer will even talk about certain functionality in the user guide, but not actually supply the required part in the standard camera kit. An analogy to this situation is buying a car - you wouldn’t expect your new Ford Golf Megane to have no engine or petrol tank, but that’s exactly what a lot of digital cameras are supplied like when you buy one (although it’s obviously a lot easier to fit those parts yourself in a digicam!).
Does this make you hot under the collar, or do you actually prefer to have the choice of buying your own accessories? Which camera manufacturers are the worst offenders? How much is the real cost of buying a digital camera? Shout out now…

The 63rd PhotographyBLOG Portfolio has been submitted by Johann Gudbjargarson.
“Photographing people and travel photography are Johann’s favourite subjects in photography and he has travelled with his girlfriend (Sonja who shares his passion for photography) a lot in Iceland, Europe and Asia with his camera. In the summer of 2004 they travelled for 5 weeks in Eastern Europe (Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Hungary) and this summer they travelled with the Trans-Siberian railway from Moscow to China and travelled further in Asia on that trip. They are still working on the pictures but a selection has appeared on Johanns photoblog (joephotos.net). Next summer he plans to travel to India and Italy with his camera.”

Luminous Landscapes offers some good tips on taking photographs in China, and street photography in general.
“The first thing to bear in mind is that the laws and customs in various countries are different. Do some research. For example, in France, the home of Cartier Bresson, it is now not legal to photograph people in public places, even for non-commercial purposes. (More honored in the breach than the observance, I am told). Also, the situation you find yourself in dictates how you conduct yourself. Photographing children in a playground with a long-lens is likely to get you punched in the nose, or even arrested. But taking photographs at a public event like a street festival or market is innocuous. Use common sense.”

Ever heard the one about the 100 megapixel photograph that’s alive?! Well, now you have, as scientists at UC San Francisco have successfully projected light onto billions of bacteria. Fascinating.
“Our living photographs are a somewhat playful example of how devices quite useful to technology and medicine can be created in the new field of synthetic biology,” Voigt said. “Essentially, we engineer the bug to give it new capabilities by combining different gene-based skills that it or other organisms already have.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Kodak Easyshare P850 camera which features a 12x, 36 – 432 mm, image-stabilised, f2.8 – f/3.7, SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON lens.
“The P850 is Kodak’s 2005 upgrade to the EasyShare DX7590 Zoom we tested last year. Retaining the same SLR-like body, 5-megapixel resolution and 640x480 30fps movie mode, Kodak increased the zoom range to 12x, the size of the LCD monitor to 2 1/2-inches and added Image Stabilization. The P850 retains the broad appeal of its predecessor, satisfying beginners with its point-n-shoot automatic mode, intermediate users with its wealth of scene modes, and experts with its wide range of exposure controls in Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Program modes. This is truly a camera that everyone in your family can enjoy using.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Kodak Easyshare P880 digital camera. The Kodak Easyshare P880 is an 8 megapixel model with wide-angle 24–140 mm zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“The Kodak EasyShare P880 is the latest in a long line of digital cameras that has proven popular and very user-friendly throughout its history. Kodak’s EasyShare line of digital cameras live up to the “Easy” part of their name, as they’re among the simplest and most goof-proof to operate out there. While still retaining good ease of use in full-auto mode, the Kodak P880 steps out into relatively new territory for Kodak, as a credible effort at a true enthusiast camera, offering full exposure control, an excellent lens, and both a hot shoe and threaded PC-sync socket for use with an external flash, increasing rarities these days. are among the easiest and most goof-proof out there, and while the Kodak P880 offers a much wider range of exposure and creative controls than the main EasyShare line, it still maintains relative ease of use. Featuring an eight-megapixel CCD, 5.8x Schneider -Kreuznach zoom lens, and an extensive array of automatic and manual exposure modes, the Kodak P880 is a capable camera with great flexibility. Like the rest of the EasyShare line, the Kodak P880 is compatible with Kodak’s popular Printer Docks, offering one-button printing of high-quality photos. The EasyShare P880 should appeal experienced photographers, as well as novices looking for a camera to grow into as their skills mature, making it a good fit for many consumers.”

Bob Atkins has published a review of the 3 megapixel Canon Digital IXUS 30 (also known as the PowerShot SD200 Digital ELPH).
“You don’t buy an SD200 (or SD300/400) for advanced photography. You can get cameras with more capability (aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure for example) for the same price or maybe less (e.g. Powershot A510 or Powershot A520, or check out my full review of the Powershot A610) However they are larger and the major reason you’d buy an SD200 is because it’s small. Despite the lack of full manual control, I still like the SD200. In fact I bought one myself so I’d have a camera that I can basically take anywhere!”

CNET have just reviewed the new HP Photosmart R817, which offers 5 megapixels and a 5x optical zoom lens.
“When buying a digital camera, the rule of thumb has been small size, small price, big features—choose any two. With recent technological advances and price reductions, you can almost have all three at the same time. The Photosmart R817 is one of HP’s recent efforts to cram its mix of image-enhancing technologies into an inexpensive, pocket-size camera. The 6.7-ounce R817 has a 5.1-megapixel sensor, a mostly metal body, and a bright 2-inch LCD screen. It also has a 5X optical zoom, which is unusual in a camera this small. Less impressive, it lacks an optical viewfinder (which can be a problem in bright sunlight), some of its photos are overly noisy, and the battery can take four to six hours to recharge.”
