DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the new 5 megapixel Canon PowerShot A610 digital camera.
“I was very pleased with the image quality when using its Large SuperFine setting. Outdoors, it captures sharp images with good color balance. The Auto white balance setting produced accurate results in a variety of different lighting conditions. You can also choose one of the six presets (Day light, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H, Underwater) or use the custom “one-touch” setting. Its exposure system did an excellent job, capturing properly exposed images almost every time. Noise levels are nearly non existent in high/low contrast areas, allowing for beautiful sky and shadow detail.”

The Sony Cybershot DSC-H1 is a 5 megapixel camera with a 2.5 inch LCD screen. The Sony H1’s standout feature is the massive 12x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 36-432mm, allowing for many creative opportunities. The DSC-H1 also offers an image stabilisation system which ensures sharper results when hand-holding the camera. There are 7 different scene modes and a range of more creative shooting modes available. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 was first announced at CES 2005 back in January, so does it still have what it takes to compete with the other ultra-zoom models? Find out in my review.

ZDNet’s technology blog has an article about a new camera, dubbed the “light field camera”, that allows you to change the point of focus AFTER a photograph has been taken. You can already change the exposure, white balance etc on today’s digital cameras (especially if you use the RAW file format) - the cameras of tomorrow could allow you to decide what you want to be in focus in the comfort of your own home.
“By inserting a microlens array between the main lens and the photosensor, their “light field camera” takes one shot, but also captures information about light conditions. And you can later compute “photographs in which subjects at every depth appear in finely tuned focus.” However, his new technology will probably appear for applications such as security surveillance and commercial photography before landing in your personal camera.”

DCResource have reviewed the Panasonic DMC-LX1, an 8.4 megapixel digital camera with a 4x Leica optical zoom lens equivalent to 28-112mm, optical image stabilizer and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“The area in which the LX1 really disappoints is in terms of image quality. While photos are well-exposed with accurate color, good sharpness, and very low purple fringing levels, they are way too noisy, even at ISO 80. And forget about using the higher ISOs: photos taken at ISO 200 or 400 are practically useless. It seems to me that Panasonic put a few million too many pixels on the tiny 1/1.65” CCD sensor. If you’re doing prints at 8 x 10 inches or smaller, you’ll be pleased with the results if you keep the ISO sensitivity as low as possible. Any larger than that and the noise will be obvious.”

NCH, the Children’s charity to receive £1 per message donated
LONDON, November 4th, 2005 – Forget sending gimmicky, arty or humorous Christmas cards this year. A national poll today shows that 84% of Brits are more likely to cherish a home made or a personalised card this Christmas.
When shown a variety of home made, traditional, humorous, nativity, comic and winter scenes cards, 76% of the population said that they feel more “special” the more personalised the card. 51% of people admitted that receiving a card with no personal message inside actually made then feel snubbed.
In response to the nation’s appetite to create and make, Hewlett Packard has teamed up with the NCH, the Children’s Charity to create a huge national Festive Card that will be delivered to Her Majesty, the Queen on December 15th. HP is calling on the general public to submit the digital photos that best represent their vision of the family’s festive spirit.

Photoxels have published the first online review of the new Fujifilm FinePix E900 Zoom, a 9 megapixel digital camera with a 4x optical zoom lens equivalent to 32-128mm and an ISO range of ISO 80 to ISO 800.
“We find the overall image quality of the Fujifilm E900 to be very good to excellent, though not quite approaching the exceptional low noise capability of the Fujifilm F10. Even then, many will find both ISO 400 and ISO 800 an added bonus when printing 4x6 in. photos or for displaying for the web.”

Luminous Landscape have reviewed the Panasonic DMC-LX1, an 8.4 megapixel digital camera with a 4x Leica optical zoom lens equivalent to 28-112mm, optical image stabilizer and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“My evaluation is that even without any aggressive NR efforts, the LX1 is perfectly acceptable noise-wise at ISO 80 and 100. ISO 200 needs help, and ISO 400 is frankly unacceptable without processing by a program such as Noise Ninja. Fortunately the noise is primarily chroma, so it cleans up quite nicely. So, while the good news is that shooting in RAW mode allows the LX-1 to perform at its best, the RAW software provided by Panasonic is simply dreadful. Fugedaboutit. Fortunately the latest version of Adobe’s Camera Raw for both Photoshop CS2 and Elements 4 already supports the LX-1, and does so very well. Combine the LX1 in RAW mode with Camera Raw, and the image quality will more than please you. JPG files, or RAW files processed with Panasonic’s PhotoFunStudio may disappoint.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S4, which has 6 megapixels and a 10x Zoom-Nikkor lens that is equivalent to 38-380mm.
“The Nikon S4’s 6.0-megapixel imager means it can capture high resolution images, and its 10x zoom lens gives you quite a bit of flexibility. All in all, it’s an excellent “take-with-you-everywhere” digital camera, with a compact size that travels well. Imaging Resource have reviewed the new entry-level Konica Minolta Dynax 5D digital SLR camera.
“The new Maxxum 5D also shrinks the number of dials and buttons of the 7D into a simpler but still comprehensive set that many Maxxum fans will immediately recognize. The 5D offers the same 6.1-megapixel sensor as the 7D, yielding images as large as 3,008 x 2,000 pixels. Also like the 7D, the 5D incorporates technology unique to Konica Minolta cameras: anti-shake technology in its body, which does not require a special image-stabilized lens. This one feature adds tremendous value, turning all your Minolta autofocus lenses into image-stabilized lenses. With conventional anti-shake lenses typically costing hundreds of dollars more than models without anti-shake, the built-in anti-shake capability of the Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D could easily be worth thousands of dollars to anyone with a large lens collection.”

Photographer Petteri Sulonen has reviewed the new Pixmantec RawShooter Premium 2006 RAW conversion software that was announced last week.
“Is it worth the sixty-five I paid for it under the special introductory offer? Most definitely: the new features that make it possible to adapt it to exactly my needs, taste, and photography are worth it, over the already excellent product that is Essentials. Is it worth a hundred? Now, that’s a tougher call. With the inaccurate color, I’ll have to answer “maybe, depends on how picky you are.” I would probably have bought it even at the full price, but I can see that someone pickier would have felt let down. However, if they did get color on the nose, it would be worth a hundred and fifty. I like the workflow and the controls so much that RSP will be my “default” converter anyway—but I really hope that the color problems will be addressed in future updates.”

The-Digital-Picture have reviewed the new Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens, which features Canon’s latest 3-stop Image Stabilisation system and replaces the existing EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens.
“Slow focusing was one of the downfalls of the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM Lens. Canon states that autofocus has been improved in the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens. But, Ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) is not part of the package. Improvements in the CPU and AF routines help in the focus performance increase according to Canon. Accuracy is often more important than speed. Good thing as actual performance of the Micro USM shows accuracy to be very good but speed is just OK - not as good as I had hoped. AF motor noise is not bad.”

DCViews have compared the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T7 (pictured), a 5 megapixel digital camera with a 2.5 inch LCD screen and a 3x optical zoom lens, with the new Nikon Coolpix S3.
“The Sony Cybershot T7 and the Nikon Coolpix S3 are both ultra compact digital cameras, which perform, despite their small dimensions and weight, above average. The Coolpix S3 is a real ‘point-and-shoot’-camera with little manual control, but handy automatic features. The Sony T7 works mainly automatic, but gives you more control if necessary. Colors and exposure of the pictures of the Sony T7 are better than with the Nikon S3. On detail and noise the cameras perform the same. The Sony Cybershot T7 and the Nikon Coolpix S3 are both good travel partners in back pocket or handbag, with the T7 as a winner on image quality and ‘looks’. But then again, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.”
