“Handling and performance are outstanding. The 5D has a tough reinforced glass fiber body over an alloy chassis, making it strong but light. Although its chunky design gives an impression of bulk it is actually quite a small camera, just 5mm wider and 25g heavier than the Pentax *ist DL, with which it is in direct competition. It has a big comfortable rubberised handgrip, large clear viewfinder with optical correction, and a superbly ergonomic control layout. The camera starts up in under a second, and in continuous mode can shoot at three frames a second, although the number of frames that can be shot before the camera needs to stop and write to the card depends on the image quality setting. In Standard mode it is 13 frames, but in the superior RAW+JPEG mode it is just three frames.”

This digital camera offers convenience at its best and unleashes the true potential of the digital image. The Kodak EasyShare-one was announced in January and took way to long to get to the market, as it was just released in October. However, Kodak makes up for the delay with a plush package that includes a 2-year warranty, 2 batteries (one to spare), a battery charger, a leather carrying case, a nice software package, and a host of promotions. DPReview have posted their review of the 16 megapixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II DSLR.
“The EOS-1Ds was the first digital SLR released with a full frame 35 mm size sensor and the first digital SLR with double-digit megapixel count. Two years later and the new EOS-1Ds Mark II raises the megapixel count by 5.6 million pixels, which equates to a 23% increase in horizontal and vertical pixel count. It shows too, the EOS-1Ds Mark II delivers a level of detail unmatched by any other current digital SLR (excluding the more ‘exotic’ medium format backs). The 1Ds Mark II also demonstrates a level of per-pixel sharpness which is often so difficult to achieve with Bayer pattern sensors.”

The Epson Stylus Photo R340 printer is announced today. The Epson Stylus Photo R340 has a 2.4 inch LCD screen abd can print directly onto ink jet printable CDs and DVDs. The Epson R340 can print a 4” x 6” lab-quality borderless photo in as fast as 57 seconds, and it is available now for $199.
Epson America are also announcing the Stylus Photo R220, which was first announced by Epson UK back in September.

Two New Printers Join Epson’s Six-Color Ink Jet Printer Line and Offer Enhanced Printing Features
LONG BEACH, Calif., Oct. 11, 2005 – Epson America Inc. is debuting two new six-color photo printers today—the Epson Stylus Photo R220 and R340—each with a rich set of photo-centric and user-friendly features. The Epson Stylus Photo R220 is the most affordable six-color photo printer in Epson’s line with a price tag under $100, but is rich in features and quality. The Epson Stylus Photo R340 is a full-featured, PC-free printer that provides a convenient 2.4” premium photo viewing monitor and memory card slots.

Luminous Landscape have reviewed Epson ColorBase, a new free program that is designed to calibrate the R2400, 4800, 7800 or 9800 printers.
“My own testing shows that the visible difference between printing with the calibration file active, and not, with both Epson’s provided profiles and my own created with Gretag Macbeth’s Eye One for my 4800, are very slight, but visible. On Enhanced Matte, my usual paper, I can see a slight increase in red density, as the most obvious difference. According to Epson the real value in the use of ColorBase is when you are using multiple printers of the same type and wish to bring them all as close as possible. You could thus create one custom profile (or use Epson’s) and then use that profile on each printer, allowing the ColorBase calibration done on each printer to bring them all to a matching factory standard. Since I don’t have multiple K3 ink printers available, I can’t test this myself, but it sounds plausible.”
