Gomma and JPG are two very new photography magazines that focus on photos rather than equipment and are both sold online - auspiciousdragon.net takes a quick look at both titles.
“Neither contains any advertising. JPG contains very little writing and Gomma almost none. Both are filled with pictures from photographers from (in JPG’s words) “....the great in between: not quite amateur, not quite professional. Some do it for art, some as a kind of visual journal, some because they want to become professional one day, and some just because we have to. It’s just what we do.”

In this month’s Sunday Morning Photographer column Mike Johnston considers all things lens-related.
“Well, this is possibly the silliest and potentially least useful thing I’ve ever done in my life as a photo-writer, but I’ve decided to publish my personal list of BOKEH RATINGS. I’ve simply assigned a numerical ranking on a scale of 1-10 to some of the many of the camera lenses I’m familiar with, rating the subjective visual quality of the out-of-d.o.f. areas or bokeh.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the Ricoh R2, a 5 megapixel digital camera with a 4.8x optical zoom and 2.5 inch LCD screen. The Ricoh Caplio R2 is less than 26mm thick and has a battery life of around 500 shots.
“Concluding I can say that the Ricoh Caplio R2 left a good impression. The overall quality is fine and the settings offer the (beginning) photographer many creative possibilities. We did have some comments, but still we’d like to recommend the Ricoh Caplio R2 for those who look for a digital camera at which speed and ease are on par. Add to this the excellent quality of the housing, the beautiful optical range and you will find a compact 5 megapixel camera with sufficient potency to offer the beginning photographer a lot of photographic joy over a long period of time.”

DigiCamReview.co.uk have published their review of the 4 megapixel Canon PowerShot A520 digital camera.
“Image quality is very good, the images have very good colour, saturation, contrast and good detail with farly low purple fringing - however there is high noise at ISO200 and ISO400, and images are a bit soft. The camera did a good job focusing. There is a good range of image sizes and a very good choice of compression options. The macro mode is good. Auto white balance and metering seemed to be good. Red-eye was controlled well. The movie mode is good but oudated due to the limited length videos and low frame rate.”

Pocket-Lint have reviewed the 5 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 5600 that was announced at PMA in February.
”...overall image quality is very good with detail in macro particularly excellent and metering also generally very good in all but some bright landscapes shots, where it seemed to want to underexpose. Even using the camera’s Landscape scene mode I got some uncharacteristically dark images although you do get +/-2EV exposure compensation to play with so this can be countered.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 II film scanner, the successor to the popular Scan Elite 5400 model.
“What impressed us especially was how easy it was to confuse a color negative conversion with a slide capture. We didn’t find much fault with the 5400’s negative conversion and there’s little evidence of the new Film Expert Algorithm in the 5400 II. You don’t, that is, have to select a film type (as you do in VueScan). We threw a very oddly colored Kodak Gold 200-2 emulsion at it and got a very nice conversion (VueScan handled this well, too).”

The Nikon Coolpix 8400 is a digital camera with a rather unique selling point. The Nikon 8400 has a 24mm wide-angle lens, which is currently the widest focal length available on any compact digital camera. This does come at the expense of a shorter telephoto focal length, which is equivalent to 85mm, but that is still fine for portrait shots. Other standout features on the Nikon 8400 include an 8 megapixel sensor with support for RAW, TIFF and JPEG formats, full creative control over exposure in the form of aperture-priority, shutter-priority and manual modes, plus a hotshoe that accepts a Nikon Speedlight flashgun. The Nikon Coolpix 8400 is aimed firmly at the serious prosumer, but can it compete in a market where DSLR cameras are quickly becoming more affordable? Read my review to find out.

In what must be one of the most prolonged digital camera “launches” in history, more details have emerged about the Samsung Digimax 815 that I reported on a few weeks ago. Several websites have published the full specification and more pictures of the Samsung 815. As the name suggests, the Samsung 815 will have an 8 megapixel sensor and a massive 15x optical zoom lens equivalent to 28-420 mm. Other standout features include a 3.5 inch LCD screen with 235,000 pixels, which will easily be the largest on any digital camera, plus a 1900 mAh litium-ion battery that allows you to take around 500 shots. No mention of image stabilisation for that zoom lens though…

Now that red-eye has been largely banished from digital camera photos, it’s time to remove that other common problem of portrait shots, shut-eye. Yes, a team of scientists have apparently developed a system that eliminates blinking, even from group photographs of up to 30 people. Eye-opening stuff (groan…).
“The system developed by Kaneko’s team gets around the problem by snapping 15 frames in 0.5 seconds after the shutter button is clicked. A computer then rapidly analyses these image, discarding those in which the subject is blinking, leaving photographer with a better final snap.”

PC Magazine have published a review of the HP Photosmart M417, a 5 megapixel digicam with a 1.8 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens.
“The 5.2-megapixel HP Photosmart M417 ($199.99 direct) offers more or less what you would expect from an inexpensive camera: 3X optical zoom (6 mm to 18 mm, or a 35-mm equivalent of 36 mm to 108 mm, with a wide-aperture setting range of f/2.9 to f/4.9), a 1.8-inch LCD, various scene modes, and flash settings. Essentially, it gives people what they want, but not too much more.”

PC Magazine have just reviewed the new Casio EX-Z750 Exilim Zoom, which has a 7.2 megapixel CCD sensor, large 2.5-inch LCD screen and offers a battery life of 325 shots.
“The daylight shot was somewhat underexposed, and the strobe blew out some of the details in the flash shot. We found some noise and fringing in both the daylight and the flash shots, though the color saturation and color accuracy were adequate. The camera received an acceptable score of 1,575 average lines of resolution, and it booted up in a zippy 2.3 seconds. The recycle time was respectable at 2.9 seconds. We didn’t find much shutter lag, nor did we see very much distortion in the zoom range of the lens.”

Imaging Resource have published their review of the 4 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 4600.
“Slim, trim, and super-tiny, the Nikon Coolpix 4600 is among the smaller Coolpix models available (it’s not much taller than a credit card). Though the camera body has a few protrusions, they’re slight enough to avoid catching on pockets, especially when combined with the smooth contours that define the camera. Though the camera actually fit my hand surprisingly well given its tiny dimensions, I highly recommend making use of the included wrist strap. The Nikon 4600’s matte-silver body glimmers with shiny silver highlights for a fun look. High quality Nikkor optics and a 4.0-megapixel CCD give the Coolpix 4600 great image quality, and a broad selection of Scene Assist modes makes operation a breeze, even for novice users.”
