DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S1, a 5.1 megapixel digital camera with a 35-105mm 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens.
“The overall conclusion is that there are hardly any disadvantages on the Nikon Coolpix S1. Bearing in mind the target group at which the Nikon is aimed at, there are no comments from our side. Regarding the speed, the Nikon S1 could be optimised here and there. An enhancement of the shutter speeds, to a slower and faster shutter speed would be desirable. Also speed could be gained with focussing, it takes a while before the flash is recharged completely and the camera has a limited range of ISO sensitivities up to ISO 400. Besides this, the optical zoom lens could do with more stops when zooming from wide angle to telephoto and vice versa.”

Digital camera users are in danger of losing their precious memories if they do not take steps to preserve their photos, warns Bonusprint. To keep them safe, they must learn to save, back-up and print their images.
According to the photo printing company, the growing popularity of digital cameras has given people a false sense of security - that storing images on the computer or digital camera is enough. However, what is overlooked is what happens to their priceless memories if the camera or computer is lost, stolen or corrupted, for example.

DigitalCameraInfo have published their review of the Kodak EasyShare Z700, a 4 megapixel digital camera with 5x optical zoom lens.
“It’s easy to take snapshots with the Z700, and with the printer dock, it’s easy to print 4 x 6-inch prints of them, and easy to get the prints onto a computer or uploaded to Kodak’s online services. Kodak has been remarkably thorough in creating a system that really is self-explanatory. At moments when you’d need to read the manual with lesser devices, the Z700 provides a helpful hint right on the camera’s LCD screen. The camera’s poor resolution and limited manual controls are irrelevant to folks who will use it to make small prints and 50-kilobyte JPEGs for e-mailing. What’s for sale here is an easy-to-use integrated system – an environment, really – for taking pictures with as little bother as possible and gaining instant results and prints. Little effort and little work are needed to run the gamut on the Z700. This will be an ideal and affordable alternative for the right type of user.”

TrustedReviews take a look at the Pentax OptioS5n, a stylish and compact 5 megapixel digital camera with 3x optical zoom lens and 2 inch LCD screen.
“Overall image quality is extremely good, with superb natural colour reproduction, consistently accurate exposure and minimal lens distortion. The Pentax Sliding Lens System, although an admirable piece of optical engineering, does have something of a reputation for barrel distortion and corner blurring at the wide angle setting, however it looks like some improvements have been made this time around because these problems appear to have been all but eliminated. Another problem which plagues many high-performance cameras, the dreaded purple fringe, is also thankfully kept to an almost invisible minimum.”

Last week Epson announced 7 new printers, all featuring a new inkset called Ultrachrome K3. This week, the completely independent body Wilhelm Imaging Research tell us that black and white prints from the large format Stylus Pro 9800 printer have a lifespan of 325 years under glass on Epson Enhanced Matte - yes, that’s right, 325 years! Apparently the three black inks that the 9800 uses (and all the other printers that use the K3 ink) are extremely stable carbon pigments, resulting in the dramatic increase in longevity. You don’t have to pay thousands to get this level of performance either - the £600 A3+ sized R2400 uses exactly the same inkset as the larger models. The improvements for colour prints aren’t so great - they’re comparable with the older Ultrachrome range - but black and white photographers should be grinning from ear to ear…

DIWA member e-fotografija have published their review of the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT DSLR.
“The EOS 350D is a camera that is a pleasure to use for hobby photographers. Unfortunately there is still no DSLR camera under 500EUR, I expect that to happen by the end of this year, so there’s no cheap alternative to upgrade to a higher class. Here’s something to remember. If you are an advanced photographer and shoot a lot of photos, the EOS 350D can only be a camera to step into the digital world or a back-up camera. Don’t think that the EOS 350D, despite many improvements over the EOS 300D, is in the same range as is the EOS 20D. The EOS 350D is much clumsier. Focusing, metering and speed of workflow are much better on the EOS 20D. It is just the same as is with film cameras.”

First announced at the Photokina 2004 photography show, Spyder2 is said to deliver a five-fold increase in sensitivity when compared to the previous Spyder model, resulting in more accurate ICC profiles and monitor colours. Spyder2 is available in a range of different packages - in this review I look at Spyder2PRO Studio, which works with CRT, LCD and notebook displays on both the Windows and MAC platforms. Spyder2PRO Studio includes more sophisticated and flexible calibration software and other bundled extras that are targeted to the advanced amateur and professional photographer. Last year I reviewed the consumer level ColorPlus package, which drastically improved my uncalibrated monitor, so I was intrigued to see if Spyder2PRO Studio could produce even better results. Read my review to find out.

In the latest installment of his Aesthetics and Photography series over on Luminous Landscape, Alain Briot considers being an artist as opposed to just being a photographer.
“We live in a world that fosters the technical rather than the artistic, the mechanical rather than the organic and a financial rather than a mechanistic approach. Art goes against all of that. While it can have a technical aspect, such as digital photography has, art is eventually about expressing yourself, about what inspires you, about sharing your view of the world with others. What medium you use, as well as all the technical intricacies of this medium, eventually fade away when compared with the message expressed in your work. Who knows the size of the chisels used by Michael Angelo and whether they were made of hardened steel, Damascus steel, or some other metal. Only experts know which film Ansel Adams used to create Moonrise, Hernandez, NM. I am sure you can find additional examples to further this argument. If you can you know how little people will care10 years from now about whether you used Microdrives or Compact Flash cards to store your Raw files. Case closed.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have just reviewed the new Casio EX-Z750 Exilim Zoom, which has a 7.2 megapixel CCD sensor, large 2.5-inch LCD screen and offers a battery life of 325 shots.
“I was pleased with the overall image quality when using 7-megapixel Fine mode. Note however that the average file size for those images is about four and a half Megabytes, so buying a larger SD card is a necessity. Just like the other cameras we’ve used that employ Sony’s 7-megapixel imager, the EX-Z750 captures sharp images with excellent color balance. Our sample images were well exposed with beautiful sky and cloud detail. I noticed very little noise in the high/low (bright/shadow) contrast areas, and there were very few instances of Chromatic Aberration (purple fringing around extreme highlights.)”
