Luminous Landscape editor Michael Reichmann reviews the Graphiclite PDV-3D print viewing station, a professional device for accurately evaluating your prints.
“The graphic arts and printing industry have recognized the need for uniform, consistent and technically accurate print viewing stations for years. But commercial and fine art photographers are discovering their benefits, and new less expensive models suitable for home and small studio use are now available. What these devices offer are D50 (5000K – the industry standard) light sources in an enclosure suitable for viewing prints and judging their colour balance. They use fluorescent tubes with a very accurate colour temperature, and the better units (that ones that you should consider) also have dimmers, so that the light level of the device can be matched to that of the monitor, making soft-proofing much more accurate.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have just reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ4 digital camera, which has 4 megapixels and a 12x image stabilized Leica lens.
“The overall image quality when using 4-megapixel Fine mode was good. Its Auto white balance setting worked well in a variety of conditions, with fine-tunable presets available for typical lighting conditions (sunny, cloudy, incandescent, fluorescent, etc.) and a custom manual setting. Outdoors the exposure system produced well-saturated and properly exposed images, although the FZ4 had a tendency to underexpose our beach samples. Both outdoor and indoors images showed colors that were very true to the original scene. At ISO 64 noise is absent, at ISO 100 and 200 it is detectable in shadow areas, and at ISO 400 noise is noticeable in shadows and detectable in highlight areas.”

PCMagazine have posted their review of the Epson RD-1 digital rangefinder camera.
“We were disappointed with the daylight still-life test image, which was underexposed and had an orange cast. The image did have strong saturation and good contrast, but experimenting at different f-stops produced some negative results. For example, when we opened the camera up to f/1.7, the image displayed some dreadful halos around parts of the still life. We also tested the camera at different ISO equivalencies and found images to be quite noisy at ISO 1600. Additionally, we wish the camera had lower ISO settings of 100 or 50..”

PCMagazine have just published their review of the 6 megapixel Pentax *ist DS DSLR.
“Overall, the camera handles well and is fun to use. Boot time is a peppy 1.7 seconds, and although normal recycle time averaged a ho-hum 4.4 seconds, the camera’s burst mode is capable of capturing eight frames in under 3 seconds. The *ist DS scored an average of 1,400 lines on our resolution test, which is about average for a 6MP consumer camera but subpar for a 6MP D-SLR.”

CNET have just published their review of the 6 megapixel Pentax *ist DS DSLR.
“Although the most compact of the sub-$1,000 digital SLRs, the Pentax *ist DS is not a functionality lightweight. Packed into its 30-ounce (with 18mm-to-55mm lens, battery, and media), polycarbonate-clad stainless-steel frame is an array of automated and user-selectable exposure and scene controls, a brilliant optical viewfinder and an LCD that are easy on the eyes, and enthusiast-pleasing options such as an eight-frame, 2.5fps drive mode. In some ways, the *ist DS is an upgrade from its more expensive *ist D sibling, trading a few minor features for some significant improvements.”

Professional photographer Thom Hogan has published his review of the new 12 megapixel Nikon D2X digital SLR.
“I believe Nikon has opened a huge can of worms here. No photographer that I know of currently sees a user-advantage to white balance encryption, and that’s problematic on its face. Nikon still doesn’t quite understand that if you don’t fully design to customer needs and wants, the competing manufacturer that does will grow faster and sell more product. The pro market is even more unforgiving. A Canon 1DsMarkII has no similar flaw, fatal or annoying. Thus, there’s a friction present that keeps a pro from picking a D2x over a 1DsMarkII. Other traits have to overcome that friction. At this level of product, the only trait that has that potential is that the D2x is US$2500-3000 less in price than the 1DsMarkII. Both cameras take unbelievable pictures, both have pro-level performance and features, but one has a workflow flaw and costs less than the one that doesn’t have that flaw. How much is that flaw worth to you?”

TrustedReviews have published their review of the 3 megapixel Canon PowerShot A510 digital camera.
“As you can see from the accompanying sample pictures, focusing, exposure and colour fidelity are all superb. In default mode there is some evidence of over-sharpening, but there is a low-sharpening option in the menu. There is some purple fringing, but whether by good design or good fortune the fringes appear on the upward edge of bright highlights, so the lines that often appear along roof ridges are effectively hidden.”

Photo Tidbits have posted their review of the new 8 megapixel Olympus E-300 / Evolt DSLR.
“The Kodak imager seems to perform nicely: the dynamic range seems OK, and I had problems finding any traces of purple fringing at high-contrast transitions between dark branches and bright sky at image corners. Ultimately, I was able to find some, but moderate, among the best I’ve seen. The colors are as good as I have learned to expect from Olympus: eye candy (in the good sense of the word). Contrary to some reviews, for me the E-300 provides a better and more consistent color balance than E-1, verified by shooting with both side-by-side; this in spite of the E-1 having an additional, external WB sensor. “
