Focal BladeShuttertalk have taken a look at Focal Blade, a PC-only sharpening plugin for Photoshop:

“FocalBlade has been around since 2003, and met with favorable reviews early on. As I was quite satisfied with my sharpening workflow at the time, I was hesitant to pay for yet another program claiming to be the holy grail of digital image sharpening. Having already tried Nik Sharpener, modifications of Fred Miranda?s old EdgeSharpen action, and numerous other techniques, I wasn?t fully satisfied with any of them and expected FocalBlade to also disappoint. Now that I?ve gotten my hands on a review copy, I?ve decided to put it to the test.”

Ricoh Caplio R1Pocket-Lint have published their review of the Ricoh Caplio R1 digital camera.

“The camera’s wide-angle zoom lens is extremely versatile, allowing you to cram in plenty of the scene you wish to shoot. On close inspection though, particularly of wider images, the periphery of the lens is not sharp, loosing critical bite at the edges. The lens also exhibits alarming barrel distortion, although to be fair, most wide lenses exhibit this problem to some degree.”

KODAK EASYSHARE CX7330DigiCamReview have just reviewed the Kodak Easyshare CX7330.

“When outside image quality is good sometimes very good - the images have rich saturated colour, and good detail although images could do with a slight sharpen, and edges can look a bit like pastel colours. Images have fairly low noise. There is little purple fringing. Image compression doesn’t seem to cause jpeg artifacts, although there is a fairly poor range of image sizes and no compression options. The macro mode is average. The flash didn’t cause problems when the subject was close. Auto white balance and metering seemed to be good. The movie mode is about average, at 15fps with sound. When inside, the camera does an fairly good job of focusing, the flash is fairly decent, colours are very good, although edges can be a bit pastel looking.”

Amacom Flip2diskBIOS Magazine have posted a review of the new pocket-sized Amacom Flip2disk portable hard drive:

“Amacom’s Flip2disk is an extremely portable and robust external hard disk that will suit frequent business travellers. Not only is the drive pocket-size and attractive in terms of design, it’s also relatively light and sturdy and has a disk protection mechanism mounted internally on a rubber skeleton called a Shoc Bloc. This technology, along with additional rubber bumpers on two sides of the unit, helps to stop the hard disk mechanism from being damaged by everyday bumps and bangs, which should help to minimise data loss as a result of physical damage. Flip2disk also provides a fully-bootable means of disaster recovery when used in conjunction with the supplied FlipBack software, and comes with a choice of self-powered connection options. However, you can only get a FireWire or USB cable as standard, so you’ll have to further budget if you want to connect the drive to a Type II Card slot or parallel port. Nevertheless, it’s great to have the flexibility on the move - as long as you don’t forget to pack the wrong cable. We’ve encountered many hard disk failures over the years, mainly from transporting data from one office to another. With the Flip2disk, our confidence is a little restored knowing that our data is pretty much as safe as it can be from physical damage. It’s a real shame Amacom hasn’t bundled any data privacy and encryption tools, because the Flip2disk would then be a complete solution. Nevertheless, it’s still an excellent drive that comes highly recommended - regardless of the I/O connection or capacity you choose.”

Mirra Digital ShoeboxCameraTown have posted a review of the new Mirra Digital Shoebox Personal Server:

“The Digital Shoebox was designed for those looking for a better, more convenient way to backup their photographs—and for those who share photos by attaching them to emails, mailing CDs, or by creating special web sites for viewing.  Unfortunately, the time when most people give thought to backing up their photographs, or any data for that matter, is after their PC crashes. For most of us, time is a precious commodity.  Making backups, whether to a CD, DVD, or external hard drive takes time, and while we all know how important it is, most usually do not get around to it until it is too late.  Unlike most documents and music files that can be re-created or downloaded again, photographs of a birth, wedding, anniversary, confirmation, graduation, Bat Mitzvah, vacation, or the winning touchdown are memories that we cannot go back and recreate.  The Digital Shoebox from Mirra was designed to solve this problem, and at the same time, provide solutions we didn’t even realize were possible, at least not for most home users.”

The Malaysian-based website Star Online has published (in English) an interesting article on underwater photography, with loads of tips and techniques for you to use.

“In the old days, scuba photography was a prohibitively expensive hobby as special underwater casings for SLR cameras could cost up to RM10,000 and beyond. Also, there were a limited number of underwater-only film cameras.

But with the advent of digital cameras and ready-made casings for them, scuba photography has become a much more affordable pursuit. For instance, the 5 Megapixel Olympus C-5060 digital camera and its casing (that we used during a hands-on workshop conducted by Olympus Malaysia at Berjaya Redang Beach Resort in October) costs under RM4,000.”
