HP’s new range of digital cameras was announced at the end of August 2004. Whilst the more sophisticated and expensive R-series models (R707, 607 and 507) have generated quite a lot of media interest, the cheaper M-series cameras seem to have been largely ignored, at least online anyway, as this is one of the first reviews of the M407 published on the Internet. The M407 is a 4 megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom, 1.8 inch LCD screen and the usual HP emphasis on ease-of-use. With a street price of around ?140/$180, does the M407 have what it takes to survive in the cut-throat world of the entry-level digicam? Read my exclusive review to find out.

I couldn’t resist blogging about this, ermm, article about blogs, even though it has nothing to do with photography. Apparently “blog” was the most looked-up term on the Merriam-Webster website during 2004.
“Merriam-Webster said “blog” was the word that people have asked to be defined or explained most often over the last 12 months.
The word will now appear in the 2005 version of Merriam-Webster’s printed dictionary.”

There’s another techy article over at Photo.net - this time all about a camera that takes images that look like line drawings!
“The multi-flash camera captures real life images and renders them in a non-photorealistic line-form. Ramesh Raskar describes this process as computational photography. Raskar modestly insists that while “it’s something you can’t do with film, it certainly is not a replacement for photography, or Photoshop for that matter”. Non-photorealistic imaging is an easy way to convey ideas/images and has myriad applications for technical and medical imaging.”

The Register website has a short but interesting article about liquid lens technology from French start-up company Varioptic.
“The lens has a simple structure: two liquids, of equal density, sandwiched between two windows in a conical vessel. One liquid is water, which is conductive. The other, oil, acts as a lid, allowing the engineers to work with a fixed volume of water, and provides a measure of stability for the optical axis. The interface between the oil and water will change shape depending on the voltage applied across the conical structure. At zero volts, the surface is flat, but at 40 volts, the surface of the oil is highly convex, Paillard said.”

Michael Reichmann over at the Luminous Landscape website has published his thoughts on the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II Digital SLR and the Phase One P25 digital back.
“OK. Let’s cut to the chase. Which is the better camera system - the Canon 1Ds Mark II, or the Phase One P25 on a medium format camera like the Contax 645?
Once again, I’m afraid that I’ll have to disappoint. There’s no absolute winner. Each one has its strengths and weaknessess, and based on this, as I’ve detailed above, if you’re lucky enough to be able to afford one or the other, you’ll have to make your own decision based on your particular photographic needs.
If you’re looking for the finest absolute image quality then the P25 gets the nod. There are more pixels, the photosites are bigger, and therefore the images are a bit crisper and capable of being printed larger. There is a bit more dynamic range, and at low ISOs the shadows have more detail and “depth”.”

DPReview have published their review of the 7 megapixel Sony Cybershot DSC-V3.
“Image quality wise it’s perhaps a fraction behind the Canon PowerShot G6, only because the G6 has a better lens and a more sophisticated sharpening algorithm. The DSC-V3 can leave some relatively strong halo sharpening artifacts on certain types of images, dropping the sharpening down a level can help but you may then lose some detail.”

DPReview have today posted their review of the new 7 megapixel Canon PowerShot G6.
“Image quality was as expected very good, noise levels were low and thankfully Canon either don’t use noise reduction or it’s so subtle as not to adversely affect the image (here at dpreview we aren’t big fans of strong in-camera noise reduction). Another interesting point is the conservative approach Canon has taken in labeling its ISO sensitivity, in our tests the G6 proved to have a sensitivity range which was more like ISO 100 - 640 than the labeled ISO 50 - 400, that makes its low noise performance even better.”

DPReview have just posted their review of the 7 megapixel Casio EXILIM Pro EX-P700.
“Image quality was very good, although to our eye it fell just short of being good enough to influence the overall camera rating to a ‘Highly Recommended’ (but it really wasn’t that far off). Casio need to cool off on image processing too, their noise reduction was just there all the time and you can see it (not good). In use it’s a fairly nice camera to shoot with, I never really found myself waiting for it or wanting it to do more, and the final outcome was nearly always what I wanted.”

DPReview have published their review of the 7 megapixel Olympus C-70 Zoom (called the Olympus C-7000 Zoom in the USA).
“The C-7000 is so unlike C-xxxx cameras of old it’s almost worth Olympus using a new notation to distinguish it. It’s considerably smaller and lighter, much thinner and yet no lighter on features. Despite its compact proportions it’s probably the most comfortable of the compact seven megapixel digital cameras thanks to its stubby rubber front grip.”

DPReview has today reviewed the 7 megapixel Pentax Optio750Z.
“It’s odd but there’s something strangely appealing about the 750Z’s retro styling, the faux leather front and chrome piping, it’s almost comforting. Don’t be fooled though this is one seriously modern camera with a huge range of functionality, both prosumer and technology based. Indeed there isn’t a huge amount the 750Z can’t do, it’s fully loaded, and that can sometimes make it a bit confusing.”

Globetechnology have published a review of the new Panasonic DMC-FZ20 digital camera, which has a 12x optical zoom lens from Leica.
“In the end, the Lumix FZ-20 is still a fantastic camera. The picture quality is stunning for a five megapixel model, and the optical image stabilization quickly becomes indispensable. The move towards more manual control will certainly impress the more pro-oriented shutterbugs, and even though it’s no replacement for a digital SLR model, it’s certainly a great backup model. Now if only they could get the price down…”

DCResource have just reviewed the new slimline 5 megapixel Casio EXILIM Card EX-Z55 digital camera.
“Overall, the Casio Exilim EX-Z55 is a good “go-anywhere” point-and-shoot camera that holds up well against the likes of the Canon PowerShot SD300, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX7, and the Sony DSC-T1. While I haven’t tested it yet, the Pentax Optio S5i shares the lens and many of the internals of the Z55. The camera does its best work outdoors, where it takes very nice photos, save for some blurriness around the edges of the frame. Indoors you’ll be frustrated with an LCD that only “gains up” in a few of the scene modes (most of which aren’t appropriate for indoor flash shots), poor low light focusing, redeye, and a fairly weak flash. But for a compact camera for vacation photos the Z55 fits the bill.”

CNET have posted their review of the Sigma SD10 digital SLR.
“Sigma’s SD10 is the follow-up to the company’s flawed but interesting SD9 digital SLR, which made exceptionally sharp photos in good light. The SD10 incorporates an upgraded Foveon X3 sensor, a three-layered imager with 3.4 million pixels and 10.3 million photodetectors. The new sensor partially overcomes the SD9’s biggest weakness, which was its lack of high ISO sensitivities for low-light photography. But Sigma failed to correct most of the SD9’s design and performance flaws, and the SD10 remains substantially less versatile and well rounded than competing dSLRs.”
