Photo.net have posted a new article which attempts to clear up the confusion concerning focal length, field of view and digital multipliers and how they relate to each other.
“The field of view of a lens (sometimes called the angle of coverage or angle of view) is defined as the angle (in object space) over which objects are recorded on the film or sensor in a camera. It depends on two factors, the focal length of the lens (see above) and the physical size of the film or sensor. Since it depends on the film/sensor size it’s not a fixed characteristic of a lens and it can only be stated if the size of the film or sensor it will be used with is known. For a lens used to form a rectangular frame, three fields of view are often given; the horizontal FOV, the vertical FOV and the diagonal FOV.”

“First and foremost, the Photosmart 435 is a budget, entry-level point-and-shoot camera. This means it cannot be expected to have manual features that would impress photojournalists or a zoom lens that would make you feel important. That said, the Photosmart 435 is a great beginner?s camera, especially for the price, and can prove to take some solid pictures. The fact that it does not have any manual control options can be either seen as a limitation (if this is the case, you need to accept that you will have to spend more), or as a relief. How you perceive this will really decide if this is the camera for you.”

DCResource have reviewed the Kodak Easyshare DX7440, a 4-megapixel digital camera with a 4x (33 - 132 mm equivalent) optical zoom lens. The camera is available now for a suggested retail price of US$349.
“There’s a lot to like about the Kodak EasyShare DX7440—heck, I even bought one for my mom. It’s easy-to-use, very responsive, full-featured, and expandable to boot. The biggest weakness is on the camera is the image quality—photos were “muddier” that I like to see, especially on things with fine detail like grass or trees. Don’t let this scare you off, though. For people like mom who print at 4 x 6 inches or downsize for e-mailing, these are non-issues. “Pixel inspectors” who view the images on-screen at 100%, or those who print larger than 8 x 10 should probably try another camera. The DX7440’s photos have vibrant color (perhaps too much so) and very little redeye, and I can attest that they look great when printed.”

Pocket-Lint have reviewed the Pentax OptioMX4, which is a cross between a digital camera and a camcorder.
“In tests we were fairly happy with the performance of the camera both still and moving however, at times it did have problems focusing quick enough on the subject. Additionally the white balance response was also a bit shaky at times, blanching out the image while the camera?s mechanism tried to catch up.
Image quality for picture was on the whole good, although colours on the test shots we took dull in colour.”

“The centerpiece of the Z55’s design is its 2.5-inch LCD screen, which takes up most of the small camera’s back and, thus, seems even bigger. Also contributing to this effect is the Z55’s comically small and essentially useless optical viewfinder, which works only passably well during daylight and will temporarily blind you at night if you try it with the LCD turned on. Casio crams all of the buttons on the 5.6-ounce Exilim Z55 to the right of Screenzilla but organizes them logically despite their cramped layout.”
