Canon PowerShot A400DigiCamReview.co.uk have reviewed Canon’s new entry-level digital camera, the PowerShot A400.

“Image quality is good - the images have accurate and pleasing colour, and good detail although images could do with a sharpen, unfortunately there is no option to increase sharpness in camera. Images have fairly low noise and there is very little purple fringing. Image compression doesn’t seem to cause jpeg artifacts, and there is a good range of image sizes and compression options. The macro mode is very good. The flash didn’t cause problems when the subject was too close. Auto white balance and metering seemed to be fairly good. The movie mode is good although limited in length and frame-rate.”

ColorVision Spyder2BIOS magazine have posted one of the first reviews of the new ColorVision Spyder2 monitor calibration device.

“If you work with digital images on a regular basis, a calibrated monitor is essential in order to produce prints that resemble their on-screen counterparts. ColorVision’s Spyder2Pro is a monitor calibrator that works well with both PCs and Macs and will help you to achieve consistent and neutral grey values as well as exceptionally smooth tonal response on CRTs, LCD and laptop displays. New optimised hardware that’s easier to attach to monitors, and new photo sensors that are around five times more sensitive during calibration than the previous model, help you to improve your display’s colour uniformity more effectively on different monitors relatively quickly and easily. Spyder2Pro Studio is one of the most effective and attractively priced products for professionals, although its results on a laptop screen were less impressive.”

Olympus P-440 Digital Photo PrinterThe latest article in the “Tech Corner” monthly column, by Mike Chaney, over on Steves Digicams poses the question “Which printer is right for you?”:

“If you need one printer that meets all your needs, you have to ask yourself the question: how large will you need to print? If you regularly (or even occasionally) need to print at a size larger than 8x10, you are basically limited to wide format inkjets as consumer level dye sub printers are limited to 8x10. In the dye sub category, we start out with the small 4x6 versions that normally sell for $200 or less and then we move up to the “big boys” like the Olympus P-440 or the Kodak 8500/8600 series that can print up to 8x10.”

Tamron 17-35mm Di LensMike Johnston’s “Sunday Morning Photographer” column this week is devoted to digital, with opinions about the new DSLR cameras on the market, a cheap and effective black and white printing system, and the Tamron 17-35mm Di lens (pictured).

“Got all that? It’s not quite all. Two very important specifications you also need to know about are: weight, 14.4 ounces (440g); and price, less than $500.

These last two bits make the Tamron 17-35mm Di truly stand out. Virtually any lens maker can make superb lenses if a) it can charge enough money for it, and b) if it can make the lens as large and heavy as it wants to. Most lenses of this specification are, to put it kindly, beasts. As in, big and heavy. This lens isn’t. I know, I know, real men don’t care about weight…and yet you know in your heart you do, especially if you practice a style of photography that has you carrying the camera around with you wherever you go. Virtually anyone who has been in this game for a few decades has owned lenses that more often than not get left behind because they’re just friggin’ bricks, and I don’t care if you’re the Guvernator. I’m not a nut about small and light, but small enough and light enough are plusses.”

FujiFilm FinePix E500 ZoomImaging Resource have just reviewed the FujiFilm FinePix E500 Zoom, which is equipped with a 4.0 megapixel sensor and a 3.2X wide angle optical zoom lens.

“Generally good noise levels, and a good job of balancing image noise against subtle shadow detail. Image noise was generally low on the E500, increasing to only moderate levels at ISO 200. At ISO 400, while the noise level was high, the grain pattern was fine and tight. To its credit, the E500 doesn’t trade away too much detail in its effort to suppress image noise, something other digicam makers would do well to emulate.”

Epson Stylus Photo R300Tom’s Hardware Guide have published a very detailed review of 8 of the newest mid-range inkjet printers, including the Epson R300 photo printer (pictured). (found via Digital Photography Blog).

”...this article concentrates on the mid-range models, though even that covers a fairly wide price spectrum, with the least expensive model reviewed costing $59 and the most expensive $199. As we’ll see, however, the price of an inkjet printer is of little importance in the final cost analysis. Cost of use is what you have to look at above all, and we’ve devoted an entire section of this article to understanding that aspect of the printer purchase equation.”

AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED LensNikon UK Press Release 28/05/04Photographer Bjorn Rorslett has posted a review of the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED lens, the world’s first f/2 aperture SLR lens to feature Vibration Reduction.

“Nikon has managed to come up with a lens which surely is one of the finest ever to emerge from the Land of the Rising Sun. My criticsm of the newcomer is just nitpicking and should not detract anyone willing to put down the money to get a 200 VR lens for themselves. They won’t regret it. This lens is a dream to work with and the results are a match made in heaven, too. This is simply the one lens I’m not willing to let go, a sure must-have.”
