Fuji FinePix F440 ZoomCrutchfield Advisor have just reviewed the compact 4.1 Megapixel Fuji FinePix F440 Zoom (which is the bigger brother of the F420 that I reviewed last month).

“How did my photos turn out? In a word, stunning. Now, some credit must be given to the Republic of Ireland, which is a truly beautiful place where it’s easy to snap gorgeous photos. I certainly can’t claim much credit for myself, as I am not a particularly expert or artistic photographer. However, I’ve used cameras in the past which would have rendered even Ireland’s brilliant green hills dull and forgettable. The F440, instead, did a very nice job. Color reproduction was, thankfully, excellent, and the little details were pleasingly crisp. Below, you’ll find some of my favorite photos; they speak volumes for the F440’s surprising photographic prowess.”

FujiFilm FinePix S5100DCResource have just reviewed the 4 megapixel FujiFilm FinePix S5100 digital compact camera.

“Overall the image quality on the S5100 was good and quite an improvement over the S5000. Images are still a little noisier than I’d like to see, but the noise will disappear if you downsize or print the images at a reasonable size. Color and exposure were both good, and images were fairly sharp. Fuji has done a good job minimizing purple fringing on this ultra zoom camera.”

Don’t like camera phones? it seems you won’t have much choice, as an article from the BBC suggests that the majority of mobile phones will have a built-in camera sooner rather than later:

“Four times more mobiles with cameras in them will be sold in Europe by the end of 2004 than last year, says a report from analysts Gartner.

Globally, the number sold will reach 159 million, an increase of 104%.

The report predicts that nearly 70% of all mobile phones sold will have a built-in camera by 2008.”

Sanyo Press Release 28/10/04

TOKYO, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Japanese electronics maker Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. lowered its digital camera production target for the current business year by over 20 percent on Thursday due to weaker than expected demand.

Sanyo is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of digital cameras, but more than 90 percent of its output supplies other companies such as Olympus Corp. and Nikon Corp. under original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreements.

The Osaka-based company slashed its production target for the current business year to March 31 to 14 million units from 18 million units, and said it planned to lower its output capacity target to 15 million digital cameras from 20 million.

“Inventories increased a bit to levels that exceeded our initial expectations so we have cut back on our production plans,” said Sanyo spokesman Atsushi Watanabe.

Kodak EASYSHARE DX7590CNET have posted their review of the 5 megapixel, 10x optical zoom Kodak EASYSHARE DX7590 digital camera.

“Photo quality is acceptable if you don’t plan on making enlargements. Colors were bright and saturated and exposures generally good, although we noticed a bluish cast in many daylight photos and a bit of a warm tone in photos shot under incandescent light, even when using a white-balance preset; there is no custom white-balance capability. The dynamic range is squeezed toward the middle—photos lack detail in dark areas and tend to wash out highlights. But the worst defect was pronounced purple fringing, most noticeably around backlit objects.”

Epson Stylus Photo R800 PrinterPCMagazine have published their review of the A4 Epson Stylus Photo R800 printer.

“Almost any ink jet printer today can print photos at something approaching photo quality. But for professional photographers and serious amateurs, nothing short of true photo quality will do. This is the group that the Epson Stylus Photo R800 takes aim at, and it does a good job of hitting the mark. As icing on the cake, it also prints on printable CDs and DVDs and from standard business applications well enough to serve as your only printer.”

“We timed the PictureMate at 2 minutes 15 seconds to 2:22 for each 4- by 6-inch photo, about 30 seconds slower than the Sony model. Image quality is a match for conventional film-based photos. It’s also waterproof and smear-proof: We took one photo directly from the printer, held it under running water for about 15 seconds, rubbed it, and let it dry, with no noticeable effect.”

Transcend Digital AlbumSteves Digicams has just reviewed the Transcend Digital Album, a 20Gb portable data and image storage device, viewer and multimedia player that retails for $359.99.

“The DA’s main job is to act as a portable storage unit for digital camera users and it performs this function quickly and easily. Insert your card and press a total of 3 buttons and it is off and running on its own. A graphical progress bar display is shown during the copy process to let you know how it is doing. As I stated in the review, the actual copy time depends on the media and the amount of data being copied. Using a fairly average Secure Digital card I copied 512MB of data in about ten minutes. The copy process is automatic and needs no user attention so you could carry the DA on your belt, swap cards and keep on shooting with very little delay.”
