I’ve now returned from my 3-day, 300km cycle challenge from London to Amsterdam to raise money for Mind, the UK mental health charity. Despite having a rather sore posterior and tired legs, I really enjoyed it - the other 30 people on the trip, the weather and Holland were all great. I will be posting some photos during the next few days.

Photo.net have just published a very detailed review of the 5 megapixel Leica Digilux 2.
“The ergonomics of the Digilux are superb. With its centered lens, it is easier to hold, and much easier to hold steady, than the ?L? shape used for most other top-end digicams, because the left palm has a corner to provide mutual support, instead of thin air.Since people vary, there is no perfect size and weight for a camera. The Digilux is heavier than a Leica rangefinder wearing a tiny 35mm Summicron, and lighter than the same Leica with a 35 Summilux ASPH. My shoulder loves it - my hands might wish for an ounce or two more heft at slow shutter speeds. The bulk is just inside the large end of my comfort zone - about the same as a small motor-incorporated film SLR (Nikon N/F80, Contax Aria).”

Steves Digicams have published their review of the new 5 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 5200 compact digital camera.
“The ergonomics of the 5200 are great. Despite its very compact size, the well-shaped handgrip makes it easy to hold and one-handed shooting is a breeze. Controls are well placed and functional, and the menu system is logically organized. The 1.5-inch color LCD is used for image review, preview, access the settings menus and also serves as the camera’s data display. This is a high quality display with a real-time refresh rate, and I found it was quite usable outdoors in bright sunlight. I was also impressed with its usability in low-light conditions as the display “gains up” to give you a brighter view, which is crucial when using the LCD to frame your subject(s) in these conditions.”

Luminous Landscape have published their review of the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 17” wide desktop printer.
“Of course everyone wants to know - How’s the image quality? The answer is, pretty much what we’ve been seeing for the 2100/2200/7600/9600 series of printers that have used Ultrachrome inks for the past couple of years. There really isn’t any significant difference. What does differ are printing speed, paper handling, ink capacity and operating costs.
Image permanence is of course a concern, and Epson’s Ultrachrome inks are among the best out there in this regard with rated life scans before noticeable fading (depending on paper used and display conditions) of between 70 and 150 years.”

Luminous Landscape have reviewed Canon’s new EF70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM telephoto zoom lens, which measures less than 10cm long and includes Canon’s Image Stabilisation technology to reduce camera shake.
“This is an appealing lens in many ways. It measures reasonably well, and though the price is a bit high it is appropriate for what you get. The low weight and small size are real plusses. Resolution appears high, but I have to admit that on-screen and in prints I see a certain “softness” to images produced by this lens that doesn’t show up in lab measurements.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the 4 megapixel Kyocera Finecam L4v, which has a huge 2.5 inch LCD display on the back of the camera.
“Slightly disappointing resolution for a four-megapixel camera. The L4v performed fairly well on the “laboratory” resolution test chart, though somewhat below my expectations for a four-megapixel camera. It started showing artifacts in the test patterns at resolutions as low as 600 lines per picture height, in both horizontal and vertical directions. I found “strong detail” only to 1,050 lines in both directions. “Extinction” of the target patterns occurred around 1,200-1,250 lines.”

Dphoto.us have reviewed Canon’s new EF70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM telephoto zoom lens, which measures less than 10cm long and includes Canon’s Image Stabilisation technology to reduce camera shake.
“Immediately noticable is the light weight. Particularly if you’re used to shooting with Canon L lenses, the 70-300 DO will seem light as a feather at it’s weight of only 720g/25.2 oz. For travel purposes or when otherwise traveling light, the 70 - 300 provides very useful focal lengths in a very manageable package. This however is not enough for serious photographers if image quality is sacrificed to a great degree. I had the opportunity to shoot with the 70 - 300 DO for two days. The first day was shooting an outdoor concert. I was very pleased with the contrast and skin tones of the lens. Zoom operation was very smooth, and autofocus was acceptable, though not as quick as Canon’s 70 - 200 2.8.”

Pocket-lint have published a short review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR (found via DP-Now).
“Overall the D70 is a spectacularly good digital SLR. The speed of the drive, the size of image buffer and strange decision not to make an external booster battery to fit the camera are the only signs this is not designed for the professional market, well that and the price. This is the sort of camera that the masses are hankering to own and the professionals would be proud to turn to as a back up or a lighter ?in-the-field? body.”
