Nikon D70Another day, another Nikon D70 review :-) This time it’s the turn of Imaging Resource, who published their review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR yesterday.

“With the D70, Nikon apparently chose to go with a less aggressive antialiasing filter than in the D100, which produces the crisper-looking images, but also leaves it open to moire problems with repeating patterns. (This is probably the one aspect of the D70 that I found the most annoying, but on the whole, I’m personally willing to accept a very occasional moire problem for the increased sharpness that comes with it.) Comparing the D70’s images to those from the Canon cameras, the D70’s photos tend to look just slightly crisper…”

Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2Dphoto.us have just posted the first part of their review of the new 8-megapixel Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2 digital camera.

“As I’m used to shooting with a couple of Canon 1D’s and several thousand dollars worth of lenses whenever I am working, I was very anxious to see how the latest crop of “Top Shelf” fixed lens digital cameras handled. A camera can have all the bells and whistles and whizz bang gizmos in the world. But to me, it all boils down to whether or not the camera can make a picture you are proud of.”

NEW STUDY BY FUJIFILM AND INFOTRENDS REVEALS MORE CONSUMERS PRINTING THEIR DIGITAL PHOTOS AT RETAIL LOCATIONS

Rise in digital camera ownership, coupled with trend in growing awareness of retail printing, positive sign for retail photofinishing market

VALHALLA, NY, APRIL 14, 2004 - Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc., a pioneer in digital imaging products and services, today announced the results of its Year Three Digital Camera Retail Printing Study. The study reveals that the percentage of consumers now aware that they can print digital images at retail locations has doubled since the Year Two study. In addition, the survey, conducted by InfoTrends Research Group for Fujifilm in January 2004, shows a significant increase in the number of consumers now choosing to print at retail. The study surveyed the preferences of digital camera owners and prospective buyers in the areas of digital camera use, printing and storing of digital images.

Today, more than 30 percent of U.S. households own at least one digital camera 1. That number is expected to reach 40 percent by the end of 2004. As digital images proliferate, consumers must store and manage their pictures. Currently, a quarter of digital camera users employ printing as a method of storing images. This number is expected to rise in proportion to increasing image management needs in the future.

After over a month of posting Tenerife photos (I still have a couple of days worth to sort through yet), I’ve returned home with these shots of my local high street. It’s amazing what you can find just yards away from where you live, if you put your mind to it. An hour of walking up one side and down the other produced some good (if not particularly noteworthy) pictures, although the grey overcast sky didn’t really help.

A news story over on Imaging Resource reports that Leica are cutting 117 jobs from its head office in Solms, with more reductions to follow later this year:

“Leica Chairman of the Board Hanns-Peter Cohn cites an ongoing reduction in consumer spending - particularly on expensive items like the company’s cameras - as the cause for the layoffs. Likewise, the trend towards digital photography has caused the company’s sales figures to fall.”

Canon PowerShot S1Crutchfield Advisor have just reviewed the Canon Powershot S1 IS digital camera, which offers 10x image stablised zoom, 3 megapixels and high-quality 640 x 480 video at 30 frames/second with sound.

“Canon’s S1 combines capable automatic digital photography with some really advantageous features. The optical zoom was as powerful as I expected, although I personally found it as useful for capturing candid-style photos of friends and family, or easy close-ups of small objects, as I did for zeroing in on distant subjects or scenes. (I strongly recommend the S1 for parents who want to snap digital shots of their kids; with its telephoto zoom lens, it’s a fantastic way to capture a moment without getting close enough to intrude upon it.) And the Image Stabilizer did a wonderful job of correcting for my unsteady shooting style.”

“If the Digital Rebel is a crippled 10D, the D70 is an enhanced D100! Love the meter, love the flash, like the improved controls and menus, not missing much of anything (realistically, only the missing mirror pre-release is a functional thing that I miss).”

Photo.net have just reviewed the Canon EF-S 18-55/3.5-5.6, which ships as part of a kit with the Canon EOS 300D / Digital Rebel and can only be used on that digital SLR camera.

“The 18-55/3.5-5.6 is a very good lens for $100. It’s weaknesses show up at the ends of its zoom range (18mm and 55mm), especially in the corners of the frame when used wide open where resolution and contrast can be rather poor. To get decent sharpness in the corners requires stopping to f8 at 18mm or f11 at 55mm - but you still won’t get the same image quality as you would from a a prime or “L” series zoom lens. In the mid range (28mm), performance is pretty good at both center and edge. For a cheap, plastic mount, low end consumer lens, the 18-55 is certainly better than I would have expected.”

The latest Luminous Landscape article is an introduction to astrophotography by Jeff Ball.

“Fortunately, astrophotographers are benefiting greatly from the focus efforts of digital camera manufacturers to reduce noise in their chips. The new chips, especially the CMOS chips, have proven to be pretty good astronomical imaging devices. In their current configuration, the filters reduce the sensitivity of the chips to the 656nm spectral line, but some astronomical manufacturers are actually modifying the filter on the Digital Rebel to improve the 656nm sensitivity for astronomical imaging.”
