LEICAVIT-M now also available with black chrome finish
Leica Camera AG, Solms is now offering customers of its LEICAVIT-M - a mechanical, battery-independent accessory for fast film winding - the alternative of a black chrome finish. This is in response to many requests of customers who have a black chrome model of the LEICA M7, LEICA M6TTL, LEICA M6, LEICA M4-P and LEICA M4-2 and would like to add this accessory to their outfit.
The LEICAVIT-M harmonizes perfectly with the LEICA M camera, making it only nine millimeters higher. The LEICAVIT-M is attached to the camera instead of the base plate. The easy-grip position of the winding lever under the camera permits fast, low-noise film transport without the photographer having to take his eye away from the camera.
This gives the user the possibility of reacting even more flexibly to spontaneous photographic situations.

You’ve probably already noticed that PhotographyBLOG has been updated today - I’ve arrived back in the UK after my very enjoyable 10-day trip to Tenerife (to be greeted last night by snow and sub-zero temperatures!). Normal service has now been resumed, although I still have to read the 1,900 emails in my inbox :-) (although about 90% of them will probably be spam). So if you’ve emailed me during the last 10 days, you should have a reply by tomorrow morning.

dpmac.com has just started its review of the Nikon D70 digital SLR. The same website also has an intriguing look at how the D70 is being manufactured in Thailand.
“Many photographers (especially those who have been using Point and Shoot cameras, ask why you can not compose pictures with the LCD on a DSLR camera. There are two main reasons this function is not implemented, one the viewing and focusing abilities of a single lens reflex viefinder are far superior to an LCD screen, the second is that it would waste a lot of precious battery charge, which is needed for operating the more demanding functions of a DSLR.”

A user over on the Pixource Digital forums has posted what I think is the first ever review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1 digital camera, a rangefinder-like camera that has generated quite a lot of interest (found via Digicamera.net).
“The menus are very intuitive. The LCD is fairly big, at least bigger than the one I have on my Canon EOS 1Ds. EVF is something new to me and I think it will take a while for me to get used to it. Lots of information are displayed on either the LCD or EVF display, including ISO, Flash mode, Recording Format, AF/AF Macro mode, Shooting Mode, Metering Mode, Battery status, Remaining shots, and of course, Aperture and Shutter values. There is even a live-histogram and in one mode displays a 3x3 grip to give you a better guideline for ‘rules of third’ composition. Very thoughful.”

Steves Digicams have published a First Look at the 8 megapixel Canon PowerShot Pro1, which was announced by Canon just before the start of the PMA 2004 trade show.
“The Pro1 features the first Canon L-series lens ever incorporated into a compact digital camera. It’s a 28-200mm (35mm format equivalent) f/2.4-3.5, 7x optical zoom constructed of 14 elements with two aspherical elements, two UD-glass elements and one Fluorite crystal element. The addition of Fluorite crystal and UD glass to the lens construction reduces the level of anomalous dispersion (chromatic aberration) compared to conventional optical glass, while the aspherical elements correct spherical aberration and allow the overall size and weight of the lens to be reduced.”

Steves Digicams have posted a First Look at the Canon Powershot S1 IS digital camera, which offers 10x image stablised zoom, 3 megapixels and high-quality 640 x 480 video at 30 frames/second with sound.
“The S1 employs a high-speed and variable speed Canon Ultrasonic Motor (USM) to operate the zoom lens mechanism, a feature it shares with the new, top-of-the-line PowerShot Pro1 digital camera. The silence of the USM is particularly beneficial in movie mode to preserve and enhance the quality of the audio recording.”

In this week’s Sunday Morning Photographer column Mike Johnston suggests a number of different ways of beating the winter blues and getting out there to take some photos. Personally, I highly recommend a long trip to a warm and sunny Spanish island :-)
“Post-PMA, the ‘Net is simply awash in exciting news of a technical and product-oriented nature. You can sure learn a lot about digital photography - it seems like a whole world of knowledge in and of itself, sometimes. But when Spring comes and the light turns nice, it’s good to remember that the purpose of it all is taking pictures.”

DCResource have just reviewed the Canon Powershot S1 IS digital camera, which offers 10x image stablised zoom, 3 megapixels and high-quality 640 x 480 video at 30 frames/second with sound.
“While it’s not the perfect ultra zoom camera, the Canon PowerShot S1 IS comes close. Even with a few flaws, it’s still one of the best ultra zoom cameras, along with the Olympus C-740/750 (both replaced by the C-765/770), Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ10, and the Kodak EasyShare DX6490.”

DCViews have posted a review of the Olympus CAMEDIA C-5060 Wide Zoom camera, an updated version of the popular Olympus CAMEDIA C-5050 model, with a wider-angle lens that is equivalent to a 27-110mm lens on a 35mm camera.
“The older C5050 was already a very good camera, so consequently only slight improvement was needed to make the C-5060 Wide Zoom completely up-to-date once more. The tilting LCD monitor now offers more angles and more display options than the previous one. The new camera supports CF cards together with xD-picture cards as opposed to CF combined with SmartMedia cards. There is a true wide angle zoom of 27mm (eq.) that will certainly please landscape enthusiasts, and several internal features have been enhanced to offer even better exposure and image control than before.”
