The East Finchley Summer Festival was one of those quintessential English occasions; sun one minute, cloud the next, a brass band playing, hot dogs and burgers, hundreds of small children, tombola and raffles. And a great place to take a few opportunistic photographs :-)

Steve’s Digicams have also reviewed the Lexar Multi-Card Reader, which is a high speed USB 2.0 device that supports 8 different types of memory cards.

“Once you have used a USB 2.0 card reader you’ll never want to go back to the slow USB 1.1 speeds again. You may not have noticed a lot of difference when you upgraded from a Pentium 1.2GHz to a Pentium 2.4GHz computer, but believe me, you’ll immediately notice the difference in transfer speed between USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 card readers - even with the slower media types.”

Steve’s Digicams have enthusiastically reviewed the new Canon i9100 A3 inkjet printer.

“The driver software is designed so that even novice users can produce photo-quality prints quickly. The key is simplicity, instead of numerous options for “dpi” resolution, microweave or high speed ... all you need do is select the paper type and size and the rest of the parameters will be set automatically to produce the best photo. Print after print came out looking exactly the way they did on the screen in Photoshop or PhotoImpact.”

It seems that the bandwidth limit of 5Gb on my hosting account was reached yesterday, causing PhotographyBLOG and my other 2 websites (www.markgoldstein.co.uk and www.designauthor.com) to temporarily disappear off the face of the Internet. The situation wasn’t helped by the fact that I went away for the weekend and wasn’t around to sort everything out. Anway, thanks to the helpful folks at Flump.net (cheers Andy!), the bandwidth limit has been raised and everything’s back online.

I finally got the opportunity to go back to the Lloyds Building in the heart of London on Thursday and take some more night-time shots. The Canon EOS 10D really excels at this kind of subject; the ability to check the exposure after taking a shot and then adjust the shutter speed accordingly removes the need to auto-bracket every shot, as you have to do with film. All of these shots were taken with the Canon 20-35mm lens, tripod mounted and stopped-down to an aperture of f/11. The only thing the Canon 10D doesn’t do is prevent drunken business-men from heckling you while you’re trying to concentrate…

You can see some more images of the Lloyds Building in my Travel - London - Lloyds Building album.

David Burren is an Australian nature photographer who uses Canon digital camera equipment. He has posted a couple of articles recently that will be of interest to all current and would-be Canon DSLR owners. “Sigma 15-30mm vs. Canon 17-40mm” and “Choosing a wide-angle zoom lens for an EOS D30/D60/10D” are self-explanatory articles with plenty of technical info, personal opinion and sample images. Visit David’s site first if you haven’t bought a wide-angle lens yet (or a 10D for that matter!) (found via digicamera.net).

Petteri Sulonen has added a new article to his website which attempts to answer the eternal question that everyone asks on all Canon website forums - “Which lens should I buy?” for my new Canon 10D. If I had a ?/$/Euro for every time that question is asked, I would be a moderately rich man by now…

“In my opinion, before embarking on lens selection, you should sink two fenceposts: budget and weight. A lens that’s too heavy to take along is utterly wasted money. A lens that’s so expensive that it leaves you short in a critical area will also hurt you… although, of course, patience helps—you can always get the other stuff later.”

A new version of firmware, 1.0.1, has been released for the Canon EOS 10D. I think it must win the award for the most unexciting update ever, as it only corrects 2 very minor things:

1. It increases the reliability of USB communication when used with the camera direct print.
2. It corrects wrong simplified Chinese letters on MENU.

Fuji FinePix F410Imaging Resource have reviewed the Fuji FinePix F410, a 3.1 megapixel camera with an RRP of $499.

“In short, it’s a great take-anywhere, no-brainer point & shoot camera, with enough capability to bring back good-looking images from a wide variety of situations. If you’re shopping for a nice all-around camera that’s very portable as well, you should give the F410 a good look.”

Nikon Coolpix 5400Digital Camera Resource have posted a First Look at a pre-production version of the Nikon Coolpix 5400.

“My pre-production camera isn’t going to win any awards for its autofocus. Locking focusing took longer than I would’ve liked—about a second. What really surprised me was how often it was unable to lock focus, even in good lighting. I’m hoping the production model will fare better.”

A report by the InfoTrends Research Group predicts that digital camera sales will completely replace sales of film cameras in North America by the year 2008. Digital camera unit sales are forecast to reach 14.3 million units in 2003. The report also rather conservatively comments “Additionally, within the five-year forecast, digital camera vendors are expected to deliver sub-$1,000 amateur digital SLRs that support interchangeable lenses, which will also cut into film camera sales.” I would have thought and hoped that a sub-$1,000 amateur digital SLR would be released well before 2008…

In an attempt to break the endless stream of news about the Olympus E-1, I’ve taken the drastic step of adding a completely new section to PhotographyBLOG. Olympus E-1Several photography websites have followed up yesterday’s announcement of the Olympus E-1 with detailed First Looks at pre-productions cameras. Olympus have requested that no sample images are to be posted until a production version of the camera is released, which according to a lot of sites will be sometime in August.

Here’s an initial reaction from Phil Askey of DPReview:

“So far I think the E-1 is an exciting, capable and well featured digital SLR. My primary concern at the moment is price, with an MSRP of $2199 for the body and $599 for the most useful lens (14 - 54 mm) you’re talking a street price of between $2200 and $2800 for a starter kit*, and that’s without a flash. There is no doubting the build quality and finish of the camera. The environment proofing (rubber seals etc.) are impressive as is the magnesium alloy body. Image quality is of course the one thing at this stage on which we can not comment but I am sure many people will be expecting the E-1 to be at least as good as the current crop of six megapixel digital SLR’s.”
