Leica Camera has issued a firmware update for the Leica M Monochrom digital rangefinder camera. Version 1.002 improves operational stability when the camera is connected to a computer via USB, corrects mistakes in the French and Italian menus, and fixes a bug related to the 'discreet' mode. Users wishing to take advantage of the new, improved features can now download firmware update 1.002 from the ‘DOWNLOADS’ section of the Service page on the Leica Camera website.

Futuresource Consulting forecasts that the so-called 'smart camera' market will reach 4.7 million units globally by 2016. "Smart cameras are still a niche market, with few players in this segment," says Arun Gill, Market Analyst with Futuresource Consulting. "However, looking forward, sales of smart cameras are expected to grow; with our forecasts indicating that shipments will reach one million units in 2013, and grow a further 68% CAGR by 2016 to reach 4.7 million units worldwide." The average smart camera's trade price is forecast to be $202 by 2017, versus $87 for fixed-lens cameras without Wi-Fi and $107 with Wi-Fi. Canon has announced an optically stabilised ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for the Canon EOS M compact system camera. Roughly equivalent to a classic 18-35mm optic in 35mm terms, the Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM features a retractable lens design locked in place by a switch, which allows users to retract the lens back into the barrel when not in use. As Canon's first-ever incterchangeable ultra-wide-angle lens boasting an optical image stabiliser, the Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is also optimised for movie shooting, courtesy of an advanced Dynamic IS mode that helps users capture steady video footage. Canon has announced the upcoming release of a new firmware update for the Canon EOS M compact system camera. Version 2 promises to boost the AF speed, making One Shot AF up to 2.3x faster when using FlexiZone Multi AF and the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. "The new firmware delivers improved performance as a result of a reworked AF Drive Control System and Canon encourages all existing users of the EOS M to download the new firmware version 2 once it becomes available at the end of June," the company says. The firmware upgrade also corrects a rare phenomenon that causes the EOS M controls to become unresponsive when the new EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens is used.

DxO Labs today released Version 8.2 of DxO Optics Pro. This update for Mac and Windows allows DxO Optics Pro 8 to support the Canon EOS Rebel SL1, the Sony SLT-A58 (pictured), and the Ricoh GR, as well as to incorporate all of the new features of DxO FilmPack 4 as a plugin. With DxO FilmPack 4, photographers can apply to their digital photos - now including raw image files! - all the characteristic colour, contrast, and grain of various film emulsions. On the 12th, advertising photographer Jim DiVitale will present "The Complete Digital Photography Process," a webinar focussing on the calibration and custom profiling of a camera, monitor and printer using Wacom products to streamline the workflow. The second session, "Professional Monitor Calibration for Still & Video," (26th June) will review how to access and utilise the video presets in i1Profiler software and will briefly look at the use of ColorCheckers in the video footage as a visual reference. Leica today announced the new Leica S-Adapter C for the Leica S medium format system. "This adapter now permits the use of all lenses from the Contax 645 SLR system on Leica S, S2 and S2-P camera bodies," the company said in a statement. "This allows photographers to exploit the full potential of Contax 645 lenses and also expand their range of use." The Leica S-Adapter C supports all lens functions such as auto focus, manual focus with focus confirmation and automatic diaphragm control. The Leica S-Adapter C is now available from authorised Leica dealers. The suggested UK retail price is £1,400.
