Living Exposed have a competition open for two scholarships to join a photography project on the Big Island from 21 to 25 January 2010. A broad range of participants are sought, from beginners looking to learn more about cameras and all their capabilities to professional photographers eager to apply their knowledge and expertise to something new. All applicants must submit five images and also provide a brief background of themselves and their objectives. The deadline for submission is 7 December 2009. Regular participants are required to pay a registration fee of $950, whereas those receiving the scholarships will be exempt from the registration fee and given a stipend of $500 to help offset travel expenses to and from Kona, Hawaii. As promised last week, Ricoh has posted a function-enhancing firmware update for the Ricoh GR Digital III digital compact camera. Enhancements include external flash GF-1 compatibility, playback by date, paging function for multi-frame views, menu paging function, new focus distance when snap is selected and a new “ADJ. ISO direct change” function. The Ricoh GR Digital III firmware and instructions for using these functions can be downloaded free of charge from the website below.

Aside from the 300 approximate companies displaying their latest technologies and services, PhotoPlus Expo’s expansive line-up of seminars and workshops proved to be a major attraction for attendees. LrSaver is a new Lightroom screensaver add-on that enables creating a screensaver based on Lightroom meta-data. This can be simply specific rating and above or based on Smart Collections with the flexibility to create a slideshow from practically any meta-data available, the developers say. Connected Worlds is an exhibition of panoramic images created by stitching together photos taken with a Nokia camera phone, opening on 3 December at London Heathrow Airport, Terminal 5. The photos were shot in 9 cities across the world by photographer Henry Reichhold. The exhibition is sponsored by BAA, Nokia and Skyline Whitespace. Connected Worlds will run for about six weeks, after which a new exhibition called Nokia N86 8mp Explore will take its place. Featuring photos from two very different cities, Mumbai and Dubai, Nokia N86 8mp Explore will show just what can be achieved with the new high resolution phones, the organisers say.

RED has released full specifications and pricing for its Scarlet 2/3” camera “brain”. The new Scarlet 2/3” features a 2/3” sensor capable of recording 3k HD video at 120 frames per second. The captured video is stored in RED’s own raw format, REDCODE. The body-only price of the Scarlet 2/3” “brain” is $2750, but it is also available in a configuration consisting of the “brain”, Side CF Module, wireless REDmote control, 2.8” touchscreen LCD, REDVOLT battery and travel charger, and an 8x zoom lens, for $4750. RED has also announced that the first three lenses in its Mini Primes line-up (50mm, 25mm, 16mm) are complete, with the 6mm and 8mm lenses expected to be finalised in December.
