Nikon have released a new version, 2.1.1, of Capture NX. Version 2.1.1 includes support for RAW images taken with the new D3X DSLR, and Mac OSX 10.5.5.

Nikon have released a new version, 2.4.0, of Camera Control Pro. This software allows photographers to control a camera remotely from a computer using either a wired or a wireless connection. Changes in this version:

- Support for the D3X has been added.
- Windows 2000 is no longer supported.
- In some rare cases, when images with file sizes of 14 MB or larger were transferred, the transferred images were corrupted.  This issue has been resolved.

The Royal Photographic Society has unveiled its workshop programme for 2009. New for this year are the ‘Fashion Photography’, ‘Product Photography’ and two business focused workshops. All workshops are open to members and non-members of The Society, and are held at the RPS headquarters in Bath.

ToonIt! from Digital Anarchy is a Photoshop plug-in that creates cartoon-like images from photographs. ToonIt! analyzes photographs and then creates flat regions of color and outlines that produce a cel-shaded cartoon look. Jim Tierney, CEO of Digital Anarchy, said, “ToonIt! has been incredibly popular for video applications. Photoforms is a new software program that creates true stereoscopic 3D images from a 2D picture. The Fantasea Line FS-710 is a new underwater housing for the Nikon Coolpix S710 compact camera. The FS710 has a depth rating to 60 meters/200 feet, double O-ring seal on all controls, anti-glare hood over LCD screen, and built-in diffuser. Better Photography - Portraits in Natural Light is a new DVD from former Sunday Times photographer Philip Dunn. This 60 minute DVD is aimed at photographers of all levels wanting to improve their portraits using natural light. The new StreetWalker series of backpacks from Think Tank Photo is designed specifically for urban and other crowded environments. Photoshop author Derrick Story is giving a webcast focusing on the important features in Photoshop CS4 for photographers. Taking place on Tuesday, December 16 at 10:30 a.m. PST, Story will demonstrate how to use Adobe Photoshop effectively for post production and also host an online Q&A forum. Leica have released a new firmware update, 2.002, for the M8 and M8.2 cameras. It adds detection of 6-bit coding for new M lenses and fixes a number of bugs.

Adobe has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 600 full-time positions worldwide. The shortfall in fourth quarter revenue was mainly caused by weaker-than-expected sales of Creative Suite 4. “The global economic crisis significantly impacted our revenue during the fourth quarter,” said Shantanu Narayen, president and chief executive officer. “We have taken action to reduce our operating costs and fine-tune the focus of our resources on key strategic priorities.”
