Fujifilm Professional has announced the winner of its 2010 Student Awards. The winner is Anne-Marie Atkinson from Leeds College of Art. Her photo, which was taken on Fujicolor Superia Reala 100, will feature on the cover of the next edition of Flann O’Brien’s novel, At Swim-Two-Birds. She will also receive £250 worth of Fujifilm Professional film and 25 Penguin Classics titles of her choice. Additionally, exhibition sponsors Genesis Imaging are providing Anne-Marie with a professional quality portfolio. The portfolio prize will contain up to fifteen 20"x16” prints together with a 20"x16” Clamshell Portfolio box.

Fujifilm unveils Student Awards winner

Fujifilm Professional has announced the winner of its 2010 Student Awards.

The winner is Anne-Marie Atkinson from Leeds College of Art. Anne-Marie wins the coveted title of Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year plus an amazing ‘money can’t buy’ prize package courtesy of Penguin Books and sponsors Genesis Imaging. Anne-Marie’s winning image, which was taken on Fujicolor Superia Reala 100, will feature on the cover of the next edition of Flann O’Brien’s novel, At Swim-Two-Birds. She will also receive £250 worth of Fujifilm Professional film and 25 Penguin Classics titles of her choice.

In addition to these great prizes, exhibition sponsors Genesis Imaging are providing Anne-Marie with a professional quality portfolio. The printing will be supervised by Genesis Imaging’s Creative Director, Mark Foxwell. The portfolio prize will contain up to fifteen 20"x16” prints together with a 20"x16” Clamshell Portfolio box. Mark will also act as mentor to Anne-Marie for the next year.

2010 marked the 25th anniversary of the Fujifilm Student Awards and all images were taken on Fujifilm Professional film and submitted via www.fujifilmstudentawards.co.uk

The judging panel was made up of Jim Stoddart, Penguin Press Art Director, Adam Freudenheim, Penguin Classics Publisher and the Publisher of Foto8 magazine, Jon Levy. Jon Levy explained the choice of winner: “I think Anne-Marie’s shot is humorous, it doesn’t take itself too seriously which appealed to the judges. It’s an intriguing image and there is a strong sense of narrative to it. We all particularly like the large figure at the bottom on the photograph, this person seems to draw the viewer into the book in a really clever way.”

Jon continued: “The set-up of the shoot was meticulously executed and Anne-Marie obviously went to great lengths to achieve the result she desired, even using an old copy of the book to create her cut-out figures.”

From the initial 1,500 entries 35 Merit winning images were chosen (submitted by 27 different photographers). Each of these Merit winners has received 10 rolls of Fujicolor professional colour negative film, a Penguin Classic of their choice and a copy of the book Ways of Seeing. Each Merit winner then submitted a print for final judging.

Anne-Marie is obviously elated with her win: “It’s really fantastic news, I had to miss the opening night of our college exhibition, but it was worth it to hear my name being read out! I can’t wait to see the book on the shelves and I’m really looking forward to working alongside Mark Foxwell, we had a good chat at the Awards ceremony and I’m sure he’s going to be a great help to me.”

For the second year running, Burton College was the source of the most entries to the Awards. Chris Beech, Head of Photography at Burton College was presented with £250 worth of Fujifilm Professional film and 100 Penguin Classics titles for its library.

Jerry Deeney from Fujifilm Professional commented on the Awards: “The standard of entries was particularly high this year and the judges had a difficult task in selecting the overall winner. Anne-Marie is a worthy winner and I’m sure the help and guidance she will receive from Mark Foxwell from Genesis Imaging will help her further her career enormously.”
