Ansel Adams photograph “Grass and Rain” will be available as a digital reproduction from April 16th. The eighth image in this new series of Ansel Adams Archival Replicas, “Grass and Rain” is described as an “often overlooked” image that is “a really wonderful image to hang in one’s home or office.” The Archival Replicas range in size from 7 by 9” to 30 by 38” and cost from $79 to $999, depending upon size, mounting, matting and framing. Grass and Rain will be available in sizes up to 20 by 24” with larger prints offered on request.

Yosemite National Park, CALIF. – “Grass and Rain,” a photograph taken by Ansel Adams at Glacier Bay, Alaska in 1949, will be made available April 16 by The Ansel Adams Gallery as the eighth image in its new series of Ansel Adams Archival Replicas.

The image depicts broad-leafed meadow grasses covered with water droplets.  Matthew Adams, grandson of the artist, said “This is one of those images that is often overlooked.  However, the original in our family collection is such a lovely example that we felt the image would appeal to a larger audience. The Archival Replica reproduces this tonality faithfully and I think makes it a really wonderful image to hang in one’s home or office.”

Ansel Adams Archival Replicas are digital reproductions of photographic prints made by Ansel Adams.  The imaging process used is so advanced that, other than The Ansel Adams Gallery, only the Getty Museum and Smithsonian Institution are now using it.  That technology, coupled with digital printers that use 12 inks, including four shades of gray, gives the Archival Replicas the full range of tone and hue of gelatin silver prints, according to Matthew Adams who said, “We believe these to be the best large-format reproductions of Ansel’s work yet made.”

The Archival Replica program draws from the combined collections of the Adams family and the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, where Ansel Adams’ archive resides.  Seven other images that he created between 1930 and 1955 were made available previously, including photographs made in Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, Canyon de Chelly, at Point Sur and of the Marin Headlands. 

Matthew Adams said, “The value of the Archival Replica program to the greater community is that we can bring forward very fine reproductions of a wider body of Ansel’s work, images that are perhaps less well known or appreciated. Most of these images have rarely been reproduced outside of books, and without this program, could not be produced at so affordable a cost.”
