Hidden Cuba: A Photojournalist’s Unauthorized Journey to Cuba to Capture Daily Life — 50 Years After Castro’s Revolution

Thanks to several recent news events, Cuba has once again found itself in the world’s headlines. Whether media outlets are reporting on the changes the Obama administration has implemented regarding travel restrictions, discussing how military trials at Guantanamo Bay will resume, or speculating whether Cuba could attempt a revolution similar to the ones in Egypt and Libya, Cuba is bound to remain in the news. While the world speculates on what is going on in the country, very few know much about the country that seems to find itself in the center of so much media attention.

While most Americans are not allowed to visit Cuba without receiving proper approval beforehand, those with close relatives living in Cuba, journalists and researchers, and others participating in religious or humanitarian efforts can revel in the beauty Cuba has to offer. Renowned photojournalist Jack Watson traveled to Cuba on a humanitarian visa and documented the heartbreaking yet awe-inspiring images of the Cuban countryside, cities, and citizens.

According to Watson, “This is an unauthorized journal of photographs taken during my visit. While I certainly share similar and compassionate thoughts about humanitarian aid toward people in need, I felt a greater calling in compiling the images in this book.”

Watson explains that this is not a typical travel guide that boasts glossy images of cigar shops and outdoor markets; it is a behind-the-scenes view of a Cuba most tourists are unable to see.

“If one picture is indeed worth thousands of words, then this is an encyclopedic portrayal of the real — hidden — Cuba.”

On this photographic journey, which began in Havana and captured images of the Bay of Pigs, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, and Varadero Beach in the province of Matanzas, Watson covered hundred of miles by bus, pedicab, 1957 Chevy, coco cab, and foot.

“I have tried to present a wide portrayal of images that will allow the viewer to see all aspects of Castro’s Cuba. You cannot look at the glitz alone and make logical conclusions about this country; while there is some beauty, there is more decay.”
