This October, prestigious East London gallery theprintspace is celebrating the winning entries from the Black+White Photographer of the Year 2011 competition. This year’s contest attracted thousands of images from around the world. The title “Black+White Photographer of the Year 2011” has been awarded to Binh Trinh for his set of three nudes. The winning images will be exhibited from 7th to 26th October at theprintspace gallery, 74 Kingsland Road, London. Admission is free.

The inaugural London Photo Festival will be held from 27-29 October 2011 in The Crypt, Borough High St, London SE1 1JA. Providing amateur, enthusiast and semiprofessional photographers with the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work while also gaining valuable professional feedback, the London Photo Festival is co-organised by the founders of Abitoffthemapp Photography and HCK Photography. The exhibition will be open to the public during Friday and Saturday and will host a networking evening for the photographic community on Friday evening. The Crypt is opposite Borough station, a five-minute walk from London Bridge station and the world famous Borough Market.

Canon has announced that an ultra-large-scale, ultra-high-sensitivity CMOS sensor developed by the company has enabled the video recording of meteors with an equivalent apparent magnitude of 10. Apparent magnitude is a measure of a celestial body’s brightness as seen by an observer on Earth. A star (or meteor) whose apparent magnitude is 10 is absolutely invisible to the naked eye. The sensor, with a chip size measuring 202 x 205 mm - the world’s largest surface area for a CMOS sensor - was installed in the Schmidt telescope at the University of Tokyo’s Kiso Observatory, Institute of Astronomy, School of Science. The photo above shows just how big this sensor is compared to a 35mm full-frame imager.

CENTER, a Santa Fe-based non-profit organisation that honours, supports and provides opportunity for gifted, committed photographers, has announced two public seminars featuring nationally recognised marketing and photographic professionals. Held on 24 September 2011 at the IHM Retreat Center, 50 Mt Carmel Rd, Santa Fe, the seminars are part of a special retreat-style photographic conference called Portfolio Bootcamp. The first seminar, entitled “Making a Name for Yourself: 8 Steps to Igniting a Personal Brand”, features Robin Fisher-Roffer, CEO of Big Fish Marketing and starts at 1pm, with tickets available for $15. SF Photo School, onOne Software and Sim2000 have announced a new 2-day portrait photography workshop with photographers Kevin Wilson, Martin Grahame-Dunn & Uzair Kharawala and social media expert Maz Syed. This workshop, which is aimed at those who wish to take their portrait photography business to the next level, comprises ten intensive 90-minute sessions. The number of participants is limited to 8-10 people per group. The winning images, plus a selection of shortlisted shots, will be featured on the Wanderlust website, printed in Wanderlust Magazine and The Independent, and showcased in an exhibition at Destinations 2012, the UK’s top holiday and travel show. The four winners of the Photo of the Year Amateur category will be whisked away (along with a companion) to photogenic Colombia, while runners-up will receive a Nikon D3100 camera. Software developer Evgeny Zubkov (iDevelopersLab) has announced the release of Camera Retro, a new photography app for the Apple iPad 2 and iPhone 4. Sporting a graphical user interface that mimics the look of a retro camera, this application allows users to capture photos using the devices’ built-in camera and apply up to 5 different retro effects to them. Camera Retro for iPad 2 and iPhone 4 is available on iTunes for $5.99.

The Canon PowerShot S100 is an advanced compact camera that features an f/2.0 lens and an enhanced HS System. The Ricoh GR DIGITAL IV is a new high-end compact camera with a fixed focal length lens. Successor to the two-year-old GR DIGITAL III, the GR IV offers enhanced Quick Shooting capability, quicker autofocusing thanks to the Hybrid AF System, sensor-shift image stabilization, a new image engine and a refined optical filter. Available in mid October in black and limited edition white, the Ricoh GR DIGITAL IV costs £499.99 / $599 and $649 respectively.

Ricoh will release the fifth and final function-enhancing firmware update for its GR DIGITAL III camera in mid-October. Changes include the addition of contrast bracketing, expansion of the ADJ. control settings, and a new ISO [AUTO-HI] setting function.

The Kodak EasyShare Z5010 is a new super-zoom camera, sporting a 21x, 25mm wide-angle lens.
