Canon G9Repeat digital camera buyers are driving the digital camera market, according to a new report by Infotrends. In 2007, 3 out of 4 digital camera buyers purchased a replacement or additional camera, and in 2008 almost 9 out of 10 digital camera buyers are expected to fall into that category. Repeat buyers also spend more, because they are likely to be hobbyists that own multiple cameras, and their purchases are triggered by new technology or simply the desire to own a new camera.

Repeat Buyers Driving the Digital Camera Market

According to a new InfoTrends forecast entitled North American Consumer Digital Camera Forecast: 2008-2013, the digital camera market is becoming increasingly characterized by repeat digital camera buyers. In 2007, 3 out of 4 digital camera buyers purchased a replacement or additional camera, and in 2008 almost 9 out of 10 digital camera buyers are expected to fall into that category. While the digital camera market has slowed because of a reduction in first time buyers, it has remained surprisingly healthy because digital cameras are becoming a personal rather than a household item. This is helping to drive up replacement rates.

The repeat digital camera market, which consists of additional and replacement buyers, is holding its value better than the replacement market. This is because repeat buyers are more likely to be hobbyists that own multiple cameras, and their purchases are triggered by new technology or simply the desire to own a new camera, rather than the need to replace an old camera that is either broken or malfunctioning.

This new forecast discusses this and other market drivers as well as barriers in the consumer digital camera space. It presents the 2008 consumer digital camera forecast for North America along with a comprehensive analysis of the market. The forecast is broken out in terms of units, revenue, and average selling price for the consumer (sub-$1,500) digital camera market. It is also broken down in terms of P&S cameras vs. DSLRs, price segments, resolution segments, first time buyers and replacement buyers, household penetration of digital cameras, and vendor market share.
