Canon SELPHY CP400Siim Teller has posted a short review of the compact Canon SELPHY CP400 photo printer.

“So, Canon Selphy CP 400. I tell you one thing for sure, it made me want to start a postcard company. Just because printing postcards with my own pictures was so easy. This printer is small enough to fit into kitchen drawer, prints ready-to-send postcards and is cheap enough so you don’t have to sell your grandmother. Selphy is not your normal ink-jet printer, it uses dye-sublimation thermal transfer, you’ll see the whole process of applying one color at a time and how they mix together as the paper slides forwards and backwards. Last step is to add coating, presumably to give the print a longer life and protect it against UV-light.”

PNYTrustedReviews have reviewed the new Epson PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition printer (also known as the Epson PictureMate 500).

“Print speeds aren’t quite what Epson makes out. The company claims a 6 x 4in (15cm x 10cm) print completes in 1 minute 17 seconds, but we saw nothing out in under 1 minute 26 seconds, whether from memory card, camera or PC. That’s still not too bad though. Print quality is very, very good. The six-colour print system really improves light shades, giving them extra vibrancy and adding a fidelity we’ve rarely seen from an inkjet print. Even with the enhanced resolution of 5,760 by 1,440, though, you can still see some dots in areas of smoothly changing colour, like cloudless sky.”

HiTi 641PS PrinterePhotoZine have just reviewed the HiTi 641PS dye-sub printer printer.

“Having said that, the print quality is excellent. The 641PS prints at 403dpi, which is claimed to be the equivalent of 6400dpi inkjet printers and produces good saturation and excellent definition. The technology used produces prints that will resist fading long after an inkjet has paled into insignificance and the over coating supplies a finish that won’t smudge or run as soon as a drop of water touches it.”

Kodak Easyshare Printer Dock Series 3CNET have taken a look at the new Kodak Easyshare Printer Dock Series 3 compact photo printer.

“Prints emerge relatively speedily, taking between 1.5 and 1.7 minutes per photo. The Series 3 dock’s photos displayed typical dye-transfer smoothness, broad tonal scale, and rich colors. There was lots of detail in highlights and shadows, but diagonal lines did showed stair-stepping. The composite blacks (formed by combining the cyan, magenta, and yellow colors; there is no black panel in the dye-transfer ribbon) were dense and neutral. Flesh tones were pleasing, and we detected the faintest of blue casts in the whites of some prints.”

Sony PictureStation DPP-FP50PCMagazine have taken a look at the new Sony PictureStation DPP-FP50 photo printer.

“The Sony DPP-FP50 ($199.99 direct) is the second dedicated photo printer we’ve seen for 4- by 6-inch output that lets you preview photos on your TV. It’s also the first with thermal-dye technology. As with the ink jet–based Canon Selphy DS700 Compact Photo Printer, which was the first to offer TV output, the DPP-FP50 lets you print from a PictBridge camera or computer, but the TV connection is the main attraction. And like the Canon printer, the DPP-FP50 is more of a consumer appliance in many ways than a computer peripheral.”

HP Designjet 90Photo-i have reviewed the large-format HP Designjet 90 printer. The HP Designjet 90 is a six-color, A2+/C+-sized printer with resolution up to 2400 dpi and a 4 picolitre drop-size.

“The colour rendition with Vivera inks is just that bit too vivid for my own liking, however, anyone using this printer will probably want to use custom profiles and bearing this in mind, an experienced digital photographer designer should be able to produce excellent prints to their own liking without any major problems. Prints created on HP’s own swellable media should have a life expectancy of about 75 - 100 years, this then would make the DJ 90 an excellent affordable option for the small photo studio who wants to sell prints to the general public.”

HP Photosmart 8150DCResource have just reviewed the HP Photosmart 8150 printer which was first announced in August 2004.

“‘To get the highest quality black and white prints, you’ll need to swap the photo cartridge with a gray one, which doesn’t come with the printer. You can purchase a photo gray ink cartridge for about $25. While HP’s ink cartridges install quickly and painlessly, it’s a bit of a nuisance to have to switch ink cartridges when changing from color shots to black and white. If you want to print text, HP recommends that you use (and purchase for about $20 yet another ink cartridge: HP Black. Same thing goes for sepia/vintage prints. Another drawback to this system is each time you exchange ink cartridges, the 8150 prints a test sheet and wastes ink in the process. And don’t think that ink is inexpensive.”

HP Photosmart 385Pocket-Lint have published the very first online review of the new HP Photosmart 385 compact photo printer.

“Like previous PhotoSmart models, the 385 is very good and performs well. Adding the optional battery pack makes it a truly portable device and the panoramic printing mode offers something new and different from other models on the market. We also especially liked the ability to edit our prints without the need for a computer at our side. All in all this is a top notch effort from HP and if you are looking for a printer that can print borderless 6x4in (10x15cm) prints on the move, this carries a strong recommendation.”

PNYDesigntechnica have published a review of the new Epson PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition printer (also known as the Epson Picturemate 500).

“When PictureMate hit the market a couple of years ago, its cute lunch pail design sent the message that a printer could travel.  The only thing missing was a photo viewer so that you could see the images you were selecting.  Epson corrected the flaw in the latest version of PictureMate—the Deluxe Viewer Edition ($249)—which adds a 2.4-inch LCD to complete the package.”

Canon SELPHY CP600 Compact Photo PrinterPCMagazine have just reviewed the new Canon SELPHY CP600 compact photo printer.

“The Canon Selphy CP600 ($249 direct) is the faster, more polished cousin of the Canon Selphy CP400. Canon PIXMA iP8500 PrinterShutterbug have just reviewed the new Canon PIXMA iP8500, which is is Canon’s first ChromaPLUS eight-color ink A4 format photo printer.

“Although this is a high-end photo printer that will satisfy imaging enthusiasts, the PIXMA iP8500 is surprisingly uncomplicated in its basic operation. I was pleasantly surprised with the overall look of the letter-size color glossies. They’re bright, sharp, and richly colorful with great clarity and definition of fine detail. Some of the prints are a bit too light overall, but they’re better than those I would expect from a conventional enlargement made by a high-volume photofinishing lab.”

Samsung SPP-2040TrustedReviews have published their review of the new Samsung SPP-2040 printer.

“As with most dye sublimation printers, working out the costs of printing is very simple. Samsung supplies packs containing both ink ribbons and 6 by 4-inch photo blanks in either 40-print or 120-print versions. Not surprisingly you get better economy from the 120-print pack and using this to calculate print costs gives 27p per photo. This is marginally better than Canon’s cost and compares well with typical inkjet prices.”

Lexmark P4350PCMagazine have reviewed the Lexmark P4350 an all-in-one printer and scanner with a colour LCD screen and 48-bit color scan depth.

“Output quality is nipping on the heels of the best available for ink jets, with text and graphics quality at the high end of good and photos at the high end of very good. On our text tests, most fonts were easily readable at 5 points or less, and all but one were easily readable at 8 points or less, with one highly stylized font needing 12 points.
