Digital Outback Photo have reviewed yet another product that offers a way to sharpen your images. Noel Carboni’s Fractal Sharpening actions uses a version of Genuine Fractals to achieve the sharpening effect:

“If you own Genuine Fractals we would urge you to get Noels actions. For some it even might be reason enough to buy Genuine Fractals.

Noel writes on his page “I’ve designed a great set of sharpening actions that do something different: They actually sharpen images!”. We find that this is not just marketing.”

Digital Outback Photo have published a review of Nikon Capture 4, raw conversion software for Nikon digital SLR cameras.

“Nikon Capture 4 has to be bought extra. NC 4 is a very powerful and feature rich application. Actually we think that NC 4 is one of the best raw converters that are made by a camera manufacturer (Sigma’s Photo Pro is not bad either). Nikon takes NC and the RAW (NEF) format very seriously.”

The curiously named Stick Software have just announced PhotoReviewer 1.1, a software program for the Mac that allows you to quickly and easily review your digital photos.

“In our experience, there is no tool really well-suited to taking a large collection of images, reviewing them, and culling the bad ones and keeping the good ones. The photo review and processing apps supplied by Apple, such as iPhoto and Preview, are too slow and hog too much memory. Other apps tend to be overpriced, poorly designed, or cluttered.

We decided, in the course of reviewing a few thousand photos for a website we were designing, that a better tool needed to be written. And so here it is.”

“Speed and looks are not the strong point of ThumbsPlus, but if you want extensive cataloging features, multi-criteria file search, powerful batch processing, and integrated image enhancement—and you don’t mind spending time navigating dialogs and entering database information—ThumbsPlus would make an excellent choice. While the myriad of options may be overwhelming for beginners, it’s well-suited for users who need to organize and search through large image collections.”

Digital Outback Photo have reviewed Adobe Camera Raw 2.0, which is now integrated into Adobe Photoshop CS. So if you’re buying Photoshop CS, you effectively get this RAW conversion program for free. Does it stand up against the competition, or should you buy Capture One DSLR instead?

“We always liked the colors that we got from even ARC 1.0. Some complained that the images were soft if they used the default settings. We actually like that a raw converter produces slightly soft (not too contrasty) images as we then have some latitude to tune the contrast in PS (actually one of the best tools in CS is Shadow/Highlight with it’s midtone contrast control). Again we like the the colors we get from the default hard coded profiles. But we are more into subjective pleasing colors than “true” colors.”
