Mike Johnston’s weekly column considers a question asked by one of Mike’s readers; Do you feel that your photography (the “art” part, not the “gearhead” part) is better using your Sony 707 (digital camera) or using Contax and film?
“A great deal of the technology in modern cameras exists to enable amateur and occasional photographers to do automatically ? without knowledge or practice ? what dedicated photographers have been learning to do, and training themselves to do, and doing, for more than a century.”

I realise that it’s not actually Sunday yet, but Luminous Landscape have published Mike Johnston’s weekly column a couple of days earlier than usual due to travel committments. This week Mike is fielding a few questions from the general public.
“Legend has it that Cartier-Bresson shot two rolls of film every day before breakfast. Bill Jay tells a story of the great Czech photographer Josef Koudelka visiting him at his cabin out West. Bill was amazed to see Koudelka wandering around one morning taking pictures of woodpiles and trees. Questioning Koudelka about it, Bill said he thought this was about as far from Koudelka’s usual subject matter as it was possible to get. Koudelka answered that he had to practice to stay in shape, or words to that effect.”

The Digital Journalist website has presented a selection of images from the “100 Photographs That Changed the World” book, which were voted for by readers of LIFE and The Digital Journalist earlier this year.
“A collection of pictures that ?changed the world? is a thing worth contemplating, if only to arrive at some resolution about the influential nature of photography and whether it is limited, vast or in between. We do not claim that LIFE?s 100 are the 100 or the top 100, but that they, and the other related landmark images presented here, argue on behalf of the power of pictures.”

The latest issue of the monthly online photo magazine, Vivid Light Photography, has just been published. As I’m a Canon 10D owner, the “Hands On with the Canon 10D” article was the most interesting read this month. Here’s an excerpt from that article:
“Let me begin by saying that I am a devoted Canon EOS user. And quickly add that this does not make my review of the 10D biased. In fact, it makes me more critical, since I never accept any new product as “the answer” to my photo-imaging prayers on the manufacturer’s say-so alone. I demand performance, and if the camera can’t deliver, then I don’t want it anywhere near me.
In a nutshell, I am loath to return this camera at the end of the loan period. In fact, the 10D makes it difficult to work with any consumer or prosumer digicam. I have to remind myself that working with those other cameras requires me to lower my expectations, at which point I can move forward. But we’re here to talk about the 10D, not those other cameras.”
“Photos That Lie” is a very interesting article that encourages you to open your eyes and look around your local neighbourhood. You might be surprised to find that you suddenly see a lot of photographs in scenes that you usually walk or drive past.

ePhotoZine have added 6 new articles to their Techniques section for the month of October. “Storing your digital images” should be read by every new digital photographer, as it gives a useful overview of an often confusing topic. “Creative silhouettes” shows you how to control your camera’s exposure so that the main subject is recorded as an effective, moody silhouette.

“photo-i is launching an interactive photographic competition which is for you and will be judged by you. The theme is: Autumn ? the changing season. You can interpret it however you like. You can read the Rules, find out who can enter and how the competion will be judged on the Photo-i website.

Mike Johnston is back this week with his Sunday Morning Photographer. “Taste, Part I: Schubert and Schoenberg” looks at the question of taste in photography. Are you a “I like all kinds of photography” person? Or do you strong preferences for things like grainy black and white or candid street photography - do you know what you really like? Mike argues that you should know:
“But more than anything, it just means choosing. Pick one over another. Get into the habit of discriminating. Be able to pick your favorite picture off any wall, from any group, out of any book. Know what you like. And know what you hate ? because nobody who really likes a medium really likes all of it.”

“After Life: Streatham Cemetery” is a year in the life of a London cemetery, as seen through the eyes of photographer Jonathan Clark. The website is split up into Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, with Winter being the most prolific and interesting season in my opinion. All of the photographs were taken between dusk and dawn over a 2-year period. It’s a well-executed photography project, although I’m not sure about the animation of flowers and leaves in some of the photographs.

The weblog PhotoDude has recently published a very interesting look at the case of a photojournalist, Patrick Schneider, who was kicked out of a competition for over-manipulating his images.
My first thought was that the photographer in question must have cloned out or added an important element in the image. He actually just used dodging and burning, two very traditional photographic techniques, to enhance his photographs. There is a Flash movie that clearly shows the changes that the photographer made; after viewing the movie, I can’t believe that the N.C. Press Photographers Association rescinded the three awards given to the Observer photographer.

The popular online photography magazine 28mm has temporarily closed its virtual doors.
“Due to the recent rise in traffic, 28MM has exceeded it’s bandwidth allowance for the current cycle.
Our hosting bill increases with every visit and we need your help.”
You can help to get 28mm back up and running by making a donation directly to its webhost.
Like 28mm, PhotographyBLOG is run by an enthusiastic individual who’s keen to see the site remain advert and sponsor free. Like 28mm, PhotographyBLOG recently had some bandwidth issues of its own - it exceeded the allocation and the hosting account had to be upgraded, doubling the costs. In this week’s Sunday Morning Photographer, Mike Johnston responds to the somewhat predictable attack on him after last week’s column, in which Mike dared to declare that he preferred the Sony F-828 to the Canon EOS 300D.
“And let me just make one wee small observation here ? I think we might all profitably remind ourselves from time to time that this stuff is neither a jihad nor a crusade. Even when we?re talking about digital ones, we?re still talking about cameras. You remember, photography? Something we all have in common as a fun hobby, creative art, or way to earn a living?”

The latest issue (#29) of the monthly online photo magazine Vivid Light Photography has just been published. New reviews this month include the Canon i9100 Photo Printer, Minolta DiMAGE 7Hi digital camera and Canon MP-E 65mm Macro Lens & MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite flash units. Articles of interest include “Guidelines for Choosing a Lab”, “What is True Macro Photography?” and the intriguingly titled “Putting Film in Your Digital Camera”:
“I know, I know, you probably think I’m either a genius, or absolutely crazy! This not a totally new camera scheduled for a press release at Photokina, nor has Nikon slipped me a secret new camera to test. This is an article centered on how you can make your digital camera perform like your film camera (or better), and to show you just how easy it can be to get the kind of results you’ve come to expect from your old film and camera combination.”

In the return of the Sunday Morning Photographer column this week, Mike Johnston explains why the Sony F-828 is a more exciting camera than the Canon EOS 300D.
“But I have to report that I find myself much more strongly drawn to the new Sony F-828. Of all the digital cameras I?ve owned, used, held, or seen, the Sony F-717 (which I wrote about here) was, so far, the only one that I?ve placed in my personal pantheon of favorite cameras. It was nifty, fun, cool, and different.
That last word is key. Different. The 300D, to me, is a mass-market 10D, and what?s a 10D? A digital 10S. So, okay. (Cover your mouth when you yawn like that.)”
