ePhotoZine have posted a new batch of photographic techniques for the new month of July (is it really July already?!). This months most interesting article is called “Is the image really worth enhancing?”, subtitiled “Making the decision of whether to throw-away or enhance an image”. It’s an interesting look at 4 subtly different images of the same subject and the steps that the author went through to select and tweak the final image. Other articles include “Depth-of-field explained”, “Backlighting still lifes” and “Making a black & white fine print”.

Travels with Valerie and Joe is a smart-looking, new weblog with some excellent photography and travel writing. The “Weekend in Belgium” article is of particular interest to me, as the authors seem to have visited the same places that I did in May! (and I’m always intrigued to see what people make of the same subjects).

Mike Johnston’s Sunday Morning Photographer column this week considers whether or not you should have a used camera cleaned when you buy it, or if you should take a chance and leave well alone.

“It’s always a tough decision whether to get a camera repaired, especially when the cost of the repair is more than the cost of the camera. My advice to readers back when I was East Coast Editor of Camera & Darkroom magazine was that it is worth it if you intend to use the camera…”

cover-sml.jpgVivid Light Photography is an excellent online monthly photography magazine that has been running since 2001 (found via digicamera.net). I’ve never heard of it before until today, so they should maybe increase their advertising budget! Interesting articles in this month’s issue include:

“Digital Learning Curves - Gary sets out to really understand how his new D100 reads and records light. If you shoot digital or are thinking about it - read this article.

Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G AF-S Zoom - Nikon’s latest entry into the “normal zoom” category.

Your Own Photo Web Site - Want to share your images with family and friends? How about putting your portfolio online or even selling your prints?”

Digital Outback Photo have added another brand new feature to their website; the Outback Photo Review.

“Each month the well known fine art photographer Alain Briot and Uwe Steinmueller write an independent review about one photo that was selected for the review of that month. The review is about learning and opening the artists (of course our readers and ours too) perspective. As important as the reviews by Alain and Uwe are reader comments. We will add them to the review if we feel they add a new perspective.”

Digital Outback Photo’s series of articles looking at the more technical aspects of digital photography continues with Number 2 in the series, “Pixel Size”. Dick Merrill from Foveon looks at the importance of pixel size and the impact that it has.

“A smaller pixel size allows more pixels to fit in a given field size, increasing resolution. However as the pixel size becomes smaller, fundamental physical limits become increasingly important, placing a practical lower limit on pixel size.”

Jeff Keller, who runs the popular website Digital Camera Resource Page, has set up his own weblog.

“After spending the last year or two saying “blogs are dumb, who cares what Joe Schmoe has to say”, I’m sold out and set up my own. I don’t really know if I’ll have time to post tons of stuff here, as I’ve got two busy websites plus a magazine column, but we’ll see how it goes.”

Mike Johnston’s “Sunday Morning Photographer” column this week is all about his new book:

“The book is called The Empirical Photographer. It consists of a careful selection of fourteen of the best of my articles and essays about photography written between 1984 and the year I became Editor of PHOTO Techniques, 1994. Several have been published before, and several are seeing print here for the first time.”

This week Mike Johnston continues to investigate how to avoid photographic clich?s by sharing and responding to some of the reader’s email that he received after last week’s article.

“Good morning! Today I’d like to do something I do every once in a while, when it’s merited ? share some reader mail. Every week I get responses to the columns I write here on The Luminous Landscape. The responses to last week’s column, Eschew Clich?s, were so interesting that it would be a pity not to let you read a few of them.”

So pour yourself a coffee, sit back and see what other photographers have been up to recently.

As well as re-designing the look and feel of the entire website, ePhotoZine have posted 6 new Techniques for to try. My favourites this month are “Removing undesirable elements from an image” and “Creative Elements darkroom techniques (part 2)”; one digital, one traditional darkroom, which represents my photography tastes quite nicely :-)

This week Mike Johnston looks at photographic clich?...

“The urge to make clich?s stems from a desire to make pictures that look like everybody else’s pictures. Why would anybody want to do this? Personally I think it’s because it relieves us from having to rely only on our own judgment when evaluating what we’ve done. Photographers, far more than other kinds of artists, are perpetually insecure about whether what they’ve done is going to be accepted as good.”

Lor has emailed me to let me know about an exciting new venture that aims to make photoblogging easier and more accessible. Due to launch on July 1st, Expressions! (my-expressions.com) is a hosted solution for visually driven blogs/photoblogs/media blogs, catering specifically for the beginner photo/mediablogger. There will also be an advanced version in the very near future. It looks like a great idea to me if you haven’t already got your own photoblog.

Michael Reichmann’s new article “Safe Computing for Photographers” is a concise guide to protecting the photographs that you have so lovingly created from the computer issues that will affect you at some point in the (probably near) future.

“Photography is now about computers as much as it is about cameras and lenses. The use of computers brings with it a host of new issues ? but the most important is safety. Some of the specific concerns that we all have are…

? backups of both our general working environment as well as of irreplaceable image files

? securing our computers against virus attacks and spam

? ensuring that our other important files and programs are safe against catastrophic failure”
