fredmiranda.com has just launched a new section which enables you to post reviews of your Digitial SLR and lenses. This should become a valuable resource for all DSLR owners.
“I officially launched a new “reviews” section for the site today. Be one of the first to make your mark on the reviews page!
If you are a registered FM forum member, all you have to do is to find your equipment gear and click on the Post a Review link.
Your review can be short and to the point or more detailed, the choice is yours.
I hope that this new section will serve as a non-bias reference place for photographers to find out what the FM forum members think about lenses, digital bodies, etc?
You can access the Reviews page through this link:

I look forward to reading your reviews and finding out what you all think about this new addition to the site.”

In the fifth part of this 6 part Review of Photo Sharing/Critique websites, I’ve reviewed WebPhotoForum. “WebPhotoForum is another easy-to-use, friendly and inviting website on which to post your photographs for constructive review. If you choose to pay the small subscription fee, it also has all of the features that you could wish for, including unlimited uploading and email alerts. This means that for a mere ?15 a year, you can share your photographs with friends and family and hopefully improve the standard of your photography as you go!”
As a reminder, I’m taking a look at some Photo Sharing/Critique websites and letting you know what I think about each one and the overall concept of posting your photos for review.

Digiteyesed is a website that really shows off the true potential of digital photography. All of the images on this breath-taking site were taken by one man, Sean David McCormick, with a Minolta Dimage 7. There are also some excellent free wallpaper images, so if you don’t visit this site for any other reason, make sure you at least download a couple of these.

Mike Johnston’s Sunday Morning Photographer column is once again one of the most interesting things that you will read this week. Mike looks at the question of becoming a prefessional photographer, which has surely crossed the minds of most enthusiastic amateurs.
“My advice for people who dream about turning pro is usually “don’t.” And not only that, but stop dreaming about it. It’s a tough, demanding business, with long hours, high pay but low yield, lots and lots of marketing to do, and not a lot of opportunity for indulging your artistic side.”

In the fourth part of this 6 part Review of Photo Sharing/Critique websites, I’ve reviewed PhotoForums. “There are tons of great looking sites out there for designers. However, there are startlingly few for photographers. While designing PhotoForums I tried to create a balanced design that was fun and easy to use, but that did not get in the way of enjoying the photography that’s on it.”

I stumbled across this UK-based website this morning. It seems to be a collaboration between a number of Midlands-based photographers, who all use digital cameras to capture landscapes. A lot of the images on the site are fantastic; it’s hard to believe that the Midlands can look this photogenic (coming from someone who was born there!).

pinkheadedbug.com has some fantastic street photographs by a guy called John Brownlow. The site is particularly interesting to me as there are galleries devoted to several London locations, including Oxford Street, Speaker’s Corner and the Notting Hill Carnival. There’s also tips and techniques for getting over the common problems of street photography, the biggest one being your own fear of openly taking pictures of complete strangers…
“A lot of my pictures have eye contact. In fact, I seek it out. Some people don?t like that, but I do. It?s a moment of connection. That?s what I?m after.
Some aspiring street photographers are afraid of getting into confrontations, or even getting hit.
Well, good. You should be afraid of getting hit. if you?re not afraid of that, you?re an idiot, or possibly an ice hockey player.”

In this week’s Sunday Morning Photographer column, Mike Johnston looks at an issue that seems to plague digital camera users; which camera to buy and when to buy it? Immediately after the announcement of Canon’s EOS 10D, people on discussion forums were asking what the next Canon release would be, just in case there was something better around the corner! Will these people buy the 10D, or will they end up waiting for a camera that hasn’t been announced yet? I tend to agree with Mike when he says:
“The fact is, you can make yourself just as crazy going the other way, too…waiting and waiting for the Next Big Thing. The fact is, cameras are for taking pictures with. If you’re eternally waiting for the next step instead of buying a decent camera, you’re not going to be taking a whole lot of pictures.”

This is definitely one of the strangest photo weblogs that I’ve ever visited…2am Photography (found via 28mm.org) has 50 black and white photos, all taken at 2am. The thumbnails may be a little too small, but click through them and you will definitely get an eerie feeling. No reassurring crowds of people, just harsh street lights and long, dark shadows…

A PhotographyBLOG visitor, J Black, has kindly let me know about these 2 photo-sharing/critiquing websites:
Website: webaperture
Website: ShutterCity
I prefer webaperture, as you can only initially upload 1 photo at ShutterCity - you then have to leave 2 comments before you can upload again. Both sites are easy to sign-up for and uploading photos is straight-forward.
If you post on a similar site which isn’t listed on my Links page then please let me know.

Although not strictly a photography site, Gizmodo is a clean and very-regularly-updated blog about gadgets. All kinds of technological marvels for you to drool over (though you may never actually buy them…). Gizmodo is edited by Peter Rojas, a journalist who writes about technology for Wired, Salon, The New York Times, and the Guardian, and backed by Nick Denton. Wednesday’s entry about the invention of the Smart Bra is worth a visit alone…
