DigitalCameraReview have published their review of the new Sony DSC-H1 digital camera. The DSC-H1 has a 12x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 36-432 millimeters), 5 megapixel CCD and 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“The H1 is an excellent general-purpose digital camera that consistently delivers very good quality images. Colors are bright, hue accurate, very contrasty, and slightly over-saturated. There is no visible noise at the ISO 64 and ISO 100 settings—ISO 200 images show minor noise and ISO 400 images are noisy, but less so than most of the H1’s competition. Chroma noise (blotching) is a bit above average and Chromatic aberration is also above average, but well controlled.”

DIWA member Photoxels have reviewed the Olympus SP-500UZ digital camera, which has a 10x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-380mm, 6 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and an electronic viewfinder.
“The Olympus SP-500 UZ is overall a well-built and fun-to-use digital camera. The camera is relatively light and compact for an ultra zoom but you’ll have to carry it slung over your shoulder or hung around your neck (or stashed in a backpack). Operations and shutter lag times are average. The large grip makes handling very comfortable.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have the first review of the Pentax Optio WPi digital camera, an updated version of the waterproof Optio WP camera with a larger 2 inch LCD screen and 6 megapixel sensor.
“The WPi features a Pentax 3x optical zoom that helps produce sharp images throughout its range, with average barrel distortion at wide angle and slight pincushioning at full telephoto. The operation of the optical zoom is smooth and quiet, but not continuous; it moves through its 38-114mm range in 10 distinct steps, more than adequate for composing most shots. The 9-point autofocus system did very well in most situations, however it would benefit greatly from a focus-assist lamp when shooting in low ambient lighting; focus will fail more often than not in these conditions.”

PCMagazine have just reviewed the new Canon IXUS i Zoom digital camera (also known as the SD30). The Canon IXUS i Zoom is a 5 megapixel model with a 2.4x optical zoom lens and 1.8 inch LCD screen.
“Small, sleek and stylish, the Canon PowerShot SD30 Digital Elph ($399.95 list) comes in four bold colors—gold, red, purple, and black. It’s easy to slip into a shirt pocket or handbag. But the slick packaging doesn’t quite make up for this ultracompact’s mediocre performance. It’s not the cheapest ultracompact on the market, and on our tests, we found it to be just an average camera in slick clothing.”

DPReview have reviewed the new Kodak Easyshare P880 digital camera. The Kodak Easyshare P880 is an 8 megapixel model with wide-angle 24–140 mm zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“Kodak has been quite clever with the P880, identifying a niche in the ‘prosumer’ market that isn’t filled by the likes of the Panasonic FZ30, and filling it. Taken as an overall package the P880 offers little to differentiate it from its main competitors, but for those who like to ‘shoot wide’ it is almost in a class of its own.”

CNET have reviewed the new dual lens Kodak V570 camera.
“The typical ultracompact digital camera often has your back up against a wall when equipped with a wide angle that affords no better than the equivalent of a 35mm-to-39mm view. Eastman Kodak has a better idea: including a second, ultrawide 23mm (35mm-camera equivalent) fixed-focal-length lens that broadens your viewpoint when faced with tight spots or breathtaking panoramas. The stylish Kodak EasyShare V570 mates this wide-angle lens with a separate 39mm-to-117mm 3X zoom lens. Each lens has its own sensor, thanks to a folded optical path that accommodates a 5-megapixel pair. The ultrawide lens is the perfect complement for the V570’s in-camera panorama-stitching feature, which can capture a full 180-degree vista with only three shots.”

Steves Digicams is first out of the blocks with a review of the Sanyo Xacti VPC-C6 hybrid still/moving digital camera.
“The overall image quality when using its 6-megapixel High mode is good. Our outdoor sample images were nice and sharp thanks to its internal 5x optical zoom lens and 5-point AF system. The lens covers an above average range of 38 - 190mm (35mm equivalent), offering a great deal of versatility over your typical 3x zoom lens. We noticed moderate barrel distortion at full wide-angle, with slight pin cushioning present at the telephoto extremes. The zoom mechanism is smooth and quiet throughout its range, allowing it to be used while recording video. The majority of our shots were well exposed and showed pleasing color saturation.”

Imaging Resource have just reviewed the Panasonic DMC-FZ30. This is an 8 megapixel compact digital camera with a 12x Leica optical zoom lens equivalent to 35-420mm, optical image stabilizer, addition of a manual zoom ring and rotating LCD screen with 235,000 pixels.
“Though Panasonic was late offering a wide array of digital cameras, they’ve produced some excellent and very popular digicams in the last few years; particularly in the long zoom category. The Panasonic Lumix FZ30 combines a 12x optically stabilized zoom lens with a 8.0-megapixel sensor, a host of features, and a new burly look designed to entice novice and enthusiast in a market that’s swinging toward the SLR. (The Panasonic FZ30 is very similar to the FZ20 model, the biggest difference being its 8.0-megapixel CCD vs the 5.0-megapixel chip on the FZ20, and a handful of minor control updates. It is not an SLR.) True to its Leica heritage, the Panasonic FZ30’s long zoom shows very good optical quality, and the rest of the camera happily measures up as well. Read on for all the details, but if you’re in the market for a long-zoom digicam with optical image stabilization, the Panasonic FZ30 looks like a good bet.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have the first online review of the Ricoh GR Digital, an 8 megapixel compact digicam based on the GR Series of 35mm compact film cameras.
“The Ricoh GR Digital is a kind of camera that GR-fans or owners of one of Ricoh’s analogue GR series cameras have been waiting for. From a photographer’s point of view it is a joy to see that a company like Ricoh takes the effort to develop a digital jewel like the Ricoh GR Digital. A fantastic high quality GR lens, a great versatility as a result of using the converter to create a 21mm lens and the highly attractive optional viewfinder that gives the Ricoh GR Digital a distinctive look and feel. Having had the pleasure of using the GR1 analogue version together with the GR Digital camera I came to the conclusion that this is a successful transformation of going from analogue to digital. The Ricoh GR Digital really is one of a kind…”

DigitalCameraReview have reviewed the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T9, which offers a 3x Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar optical zoom lens, 6 megapixels, an optical image stabilizer, highest ISO speed of 640 and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“I don’t know whether Sony has fixed all of the problems users were reporting with the T7, but I found the T9 to be a mixed bag. With good lighting, this camera takes very pleasing photos that are nice and sharp and well-exposed. The camera is small and light enough to fit in a shirt pocket, and is very portable and fun. In tricky lighting situations, however, the camera’s faults really start to interfere with usefulness of the camera. This is a shame, because you would expect a small and light camera to be used to take pictures at parties, bars, or other situations, all taking place indoors. Because this camera has many problems dealing with tricky lighting, and also due to the “dust problem” I experienced, I would be hard pressed to recommend this camera to beginning photographers or individuals who expect to be able to pick up a camera and “point and shoot” at a subject and get good results.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have just reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L1 digicam, which offers a 5x optical zoom lens, 2.5-inch LCD monitor and 6.2 megapixels.
“I was fairly satisfied with the overall image quality when using 6-Megapixel Fine mode. The metering system had a tendency to overexpose outdoor images by about 1/2 EV, although colors were nicely saturated. The L1 does not provide an exposure compensation adjustment, so you’ll have to accept the camera’s automatic exposure setting. Sensitivity is also set automatically; no manual adjustment is provided. Noise levels were very low at ISO 50, while ISO 100 produced a slight amount of noise in shadow areas. At ISO 200, noise is noticeable throughout the image. Chromatic aberration, aka “purple fringing”, was very well controlled, with only very slight amounts present around highlights.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S3, a 6 megapixel update of the S1 and S2. The Nikon S3 has a 3x 35-105mm zoom lens and 2.5 inch monitor.
“The S3 is a responsive performer. Power up to first image captured measured 2.5 seconds. Shutter lag measured 1/10 second when pre-focused and 5/10 second including autofocus time; both measurements include the slight delay in the LCD viewfinder’s live image. The shot to shot delay averaged about 2 seconds between frames without the use of the flash and between 2 and 5 seconds with the flash, depending on subject distance. When using red eye reduction flash mode, the LCD blanks during the pre-flash, a critical period of about one second. The LCD also goes blank and the camera freezes while the flash is recharging.”

TrustedReviews have published their review of the new Sony DSC-H1 digital camera. The DSC-H1 has a 12x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 36-432 millimeters), 5 megapixel CCD and 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“This may be Sony’s first SLR-style camera, but it is a very accomplished debut. It is quite large compared to its direct competitors, but it has a comfortable ergonomic design reminiscent of the Fuji S20 Pro or Nikon 8800. The body is strong polycarbonate plastic over a metal chassis, but the lens barrel is all metal. It has a large comfortable rubberized handgrip with a sculpted thumb rest on the back. The controls are sensibly laid out and easy to operate, and the big 2.5in 115KP LCD monitor is bright and clear, although rather vulnerable to scratches and finger marks.
However the most eye-catching feature, and the camera’s main selling point, is its huge 12x optical zoom lens, equivalent to a whopping 36-432mm on a 35mm camera. Like many recent super-zoom cameras, it also features optical image stabilization, essential when using a lens of this size.”

DigiCamReview have reviewed the Ricoh Caplio R3, a 5 megapixel compact camera with a 7x optical zoom lens equivalent to 28-200mm and vibration correction of the CCD.
“The camera is very easy to use, especially in AUTO mode, or one of the scene modes, even though the camera has a lot of options. The controls on the back of the camera are quite straight forward - the menus are very responsive and easy to read and navigate. The menus are also easy to use, and the options are big enough and easy enough to see clearly. The modes are easy to access, quick and simple, mainly thanks to the right number of dials and buttons on the camera (the adjust button making it especially easy to get to regularly used options). Most functions can be worked out without having to refer to the manual.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the new Kodak Easyshare P880 digital camera. The Kodak Easyshare P880 is an 8 megapixel model with wide-angle 24–140 mm zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“I enjoyed using the lens’ mechanical zoom ring, a great improvement over the motor-driven zooms of most consumer digicams. Like the zoom controls of dSLR lenses, the P880’s enables you to move quickly and directly to the focal length needed for your shot composition. The lens is also equipped with a fly-by-wire manual focus ring. Manual focus is a breeze thanks to the MF assist function, which enlarges the viewfinder image as you turn the focus ring. The quality of the viewfinder image, enlargement of the focus area and intensification of the viewfinder image in dim lighting contribute to a manual focus arrangement which betters that of many dSLR’s.”

CameraLabs have published their review of the Fujifilm FinePix S9500 Zoom, a new 9 megapixel digital camera with a 28-300mm lens with twist-barrel zoom control (also known as the S9000).
“Of course if you can’t remove the lens you’ll want some decent glass up-front, and the S9500 certainly delivers the goods in terms of focal range at least. Where most compacts and all-in-ones start at a modest wide angle equivalent to around 35mm, the S9500 boasts a considerably more useful 28mm. It then optically zooms right into a powerful telephoto equivalent to 300mm and even offers a ridiculously close Super Macro mode of just 1cm. Try doing all of that with the bundled 3x zoom you get with a digital SLR.”
