PCMagazine have posted their review of the new 5 megapixel Olympus C-5500 Sport Zoom digital camera (called the C-55 Sports Zoom in the rest of the world).
“Though it sounds like a contradiction, the 5.1-megapixel Olympus Camedia C-5500 Sport Zoom is a large compact digital camera. That may not be such a bad thing for those with larger hands, but if you’re looking for a camera to slip into your pocket or purse when you’re done shooting, this isn’t it. Still, the camera produces clean images, and we like its long zoom.”

Trusted Reviews have reviewed the 7 megapixel Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom, which was announced at the CES show back in January.
“As a camera reviewer I get to see all the latest models usually before they’re in the shops, but I only have them for a week or so before they have to go back to the manufacturers. Most of the time this is a perfectly fine arrangement, however once in a while I get a camera that makes such an impression on me I’m reluctant to return it. The Olympus C-7070 is just such a camera. I’ve only had it two weeks so far, but I have to admit I’ve completely fallen in love with it. I wonder if the marketing team at Olympus would believe me if I told them I’d lost it?”

Imaging Resource have published their review of the new Sony DSC-H1 digital camera. The DSC-H1 has a 12x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 36-432 millimeters), 5 megapixel CCD and 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-H1 is a new form factor addition to a long and very broad line of digital cameras that reflect Sony’s commanding position in the digital camera marketplace. Like many other long zoom cameras, the Sony H1 has a miniature SLR look and feel, with the big grip and large lens barrel. Rather than an optical viewfinder, there’s a secondary LCD inside an eyepiece that you can use when in bright sunlight. Most of the functions will be familiar to users of other Sony digital cameras, as will be the generous 2.5-inch color LCD monitor that is appearing on more and more Sony digicams. What’s new on the Sony H1 is the 12x zoom and Super SteadyShot image stabilization mechanism. The Sony H1 offers a Beach preset scene mode, in addition to the six other preset scene modes common to Sony cams, plus four metering modes offering full exposure control. Solidly built, the Sony H1 has a smooth and fast zoom mechanism and a good feel in the hand.”

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the 5 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 5600 that was announced at PMA in February.
“The Nikon Coolpix 5600 boasts 5.1 effective megapixels on its 1/2.5-inch CCD. When tested, we determined the camera utilizes just 2.72 megapixels for imaging. This is 54% of its advertised count and a dismal resolution score. These results are not altogether surprising as many of the compact Coolpix models we have tested thus far seem to fall short in this department. This does not mean small (4x6-inch) prints made from the 5600 will display compromised quality, it just limits the potential print size considerably. Users who attempt to make 8x10 prints from the 5600 will likely be disappointed, particularly after realizing much of the camera’s $249.99 retail price stems from the 5 megapixel CCD included. Consumers might be better off looking for a more affordable 4 megapixel camera with additional shooting flexibility and control. “

CNET have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S1, a 5.1 megapixel digital camera with a 35-105mm 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens.
“Image quality from the Nikon Coolpix S1 was decent but not great for a 5-megapixel camera. The exposure system was easily misled by backlighting, prompting us to use the Backlighting scene mode and the D-lighting option more than we’d have liked. Images tended to be a little soft, and there was noticeable blooming and color bleeding from one area to another.”

Doing a search for the Polaroid x530 on PhotographyBLOG reveals the rather optimistic headlines like “Polaroid x530 Now Available”. First revealed way back in February 2004, the Polaroid x530 is the first compact digital camera to feature the Foveon X3 direct image sensor. Well, it would be if it ever reached the shops. There may be a chink of light at the end of the tunnel, however, as Polaroid have announced yet another release date for the long-delayed 4.5 megapixel x530. Available August 2005 declares the Polaroid Digital Camera website. Will this elusive camera ever make it out of the factory? I wouldn’t bet my house on it (not that I own one, but still you get the idea…).

Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix F10 Zoom, which has an ISO range of 80 to 1600, Super CCD sensor with 6.1 megapixels and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“Very low noise, though strong blurring and loss of detail at the highest ISO settings. Images from the Fuji F10 were just remarkably “clean,” with image noise levels far below what I’m accustomed to seeing from consumer-level digital cameras. Noise was pretty much non-existent at low ISO settings, and with very little loss of subject to the anti-noise processing. At ISO 400, the anti-noise processing just began to blur the finer details, but the results were far better than any other consumer-grade camera I’ve tested in recent memory. At ISOs 800 and 1600, the images blurred quite a bit more, but the noise levels remained surprisingly low. ISO 800 shots were a little marginal for 8x10 inch prints, but looked great at 5x7, and even ISO 1600 ones looked OK at that size. Shots at ISO 400 looked just great when printed as large as 8x10 inches. All in all, a very impressive performance!”

DCResource have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S1, a 5.1 megapixel digital camera with a 35-105mm 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens.
“Photo quality is really the S1’s weak point. While photos were well-exposed with low noise and purple fringing levels and accurate colors, there was way too much blurring around the edges of the images in my opinion. While all ultra-thin cameras have some issues like this, it was noticeably worse than average on the Coolpix S1. And, as you’d expect from a compact camera, redeye was a problem. The S1’s movie mode was not great, with poor quality at the highest resolution (VGA) and a sluggish frame rate. Camera performance was average in almost all areas, save for the decent continuous shooting mode.”

MacWorld have reviewed the Canon Digital IXUS 50, a 5 megapixel digital camera with stainless steel finish that is Canon’s smallest ever 5.0 Megapixel optical zoom camera (also known as the SD400).
“The PowerShot SD400’s startup is almost instantaneous, and shutter lag virtually nonexistent. Continuous shooting mode takes a shot every second or so, and I managed to snap a dozen pictures before the camera began pausing to write the images to memory (performance will depend on your memory card).”

CNET have just reviewed the 6 megapixel Konica Minolta DiMAGE G600 digital camera.
“Who says affordable point-and-shoot cameras have to be dumbed down? Despite its small size and moderate price, the Konica Minolta Dimage G600 incorporates a 6-megapixel sensor, a 3X optical zoom, dual card slots, and full manual alternatives for most of its automatic settings. It’s a highly capable digital camera, with the built-in signal processor kicking in for exposures longer than 1.2 seconds, providing nearly noise-free low-light photos.”

CNET have just reviewed the 6 megapixel Olympus CAMEDIA C-60 ZOOM.
“Picture quality was generally good. Most shots exhibited accurate colors, though we saw a tendency toward a slight red or yellow color cast. The best photos were exterior shots with plenty of light; however, when we lowered the light, the visual noise increased dramatically, with a corresponding degradation in sharpness and detail. Some of our ISO 400 photos were so riddled with noise they resembled frames from a video shot.”

DigiCamReview have published the first online review of the new Konica Minolta DiMAGE X60, which has a large 2.5inch LCD screen (but no optical viewfinder), 5 megapixels and a sliding lens cover.
“Image quality is fairly average: The images have quite nuetral colour with low saturation and contrast - some people may prefer this but unfortunately the camera offers no controls to customise this - so you will need to make sure you’re happy with the camera’s colour reproduction before buying. Images are quite soft, have fairly low detail and also suffer with vignetting, and red-eye problems. Purple fringing was low. The camera did a good job focusing. There is a good range of image sizes and a good choice of compression options. The macro mode is very good. Auto white balance and metering seemed to be good. The movie mode is good.”

PCMagazine have reviewed the 5 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 5600 that was announced at PMA in February.
“The Nikon Coolpix 5600’s compact form factor harks back to that of the Coolpix 775 (which debuted in 2001), a camera that was quick, light, and fun to use. For Nikon’s follow-up, integrating two out of three of these qualities isn’t bad, but it isn’t so good, either. The 5600 is light and fun to use, but we take issue with its speed—specifically recycle time. That’s a shame, because the 5600 (as well as the related 4MP Coolpix 4600 and 7MP Coolpix 7600) is nicely designed and fairly easy to use, and it gives users 16 accurate and versatile scene modes from which to choose.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have published their review of the new 7 megapixel Samsung Digimax V700.
“At the time of this review, the Digimax V700 is the highest resolution model that Samsung has to offer, with a 7-megapixel imager mated to a Schneider 3x optical zoom lens. You can choose from a wide variety of exposure modes; from the typical “Auto"matic and Program point-n-shoot modes for newbies, to pre-programmed scene specific modes and special effects for the creative, and the more versatile Shutter priority, Aperture priority and Manual modes for those who like more control.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the 5 megapixel Samsung Digimax U-CA 505.
“The overall image quality in 5M/Super Fine mode was also average. The majority of our outdoors samples were relatively sharp and well exposed. However, the flesh tones in our outdoor portraits were way too cool and images were a bit overexposed when using its forced (fill) flash mode. I noticed above average amounts of noise in high/low contrast areas, with images looking grainy when viewed at 100%.”

“In its basic black attire, the 7-megapixel, 3X-optical-zoom Coolpix 7900 adds a touch of class to Nikon’s compact digital camera line. In addition to a wealth of scene modes and a built-in help system, the Coolpix 7900 comes equipped with the latest technology designed to help snapshooters get the best pictures possible. Imaging Resource have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S1, a 5.1 megapixel digital camera with a 35-105mm 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens.
“Feature-wise, the Nikon Coolpix S1 falls somewhere between the recent Coolpix 5600 and 5900. Physically, however, the Nikon S1 is compact and extremely pocketable. It has no protruding lens parts, and as a result is unlikely to get snagged anywhere. Its 5.1 megapixel imager means it can capture relatively high resolution images, and its 3x zoom lens gives you the focal length flexibility you need to frame your subjects well. All in all, it’s an excellent “take-with-you-everywhere” digital camera. With its range of user-friendly, point & shoot exposure modes, the Nikon Coolpix S1 can handle just about any photo opportunity you’re likely to throw at it.”

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix A350 Zoom, a new entry-level 5 megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom lens and 1.7inch LCD screen.
“The Fujifilm FinePix A350 jumps into a saturated market as a camera aimed at the automatically oriented crowd. The camera takes a minimalist approach with few buttons and few options, creating a primarily automatic interface for the beginner or strictly point-and-shoot users. However, it is still a step up from last year’s model, the Fujifilm FinePix A340. Fujifilm pumped a lot of money into their marketing research and found that consumers shunned the moving parts on some of the Fujifilm models for their fragility. In response, the company took out the sliding lens cover of the A340 and replaced it with a built-in snapping lens cover on the A350. Fujifilm also threw in a larger 1.7-inch LCD screen and slightly improved video capabilities - and while these aren’t enormous milestones, they are certainly improvements from the earlier A340.”
